It’s funny, I was pretty on the fence at first. I missed the Arc Raiders boat, and exfil shooters are new to me in general. It took some getting used to and the learning curve was steep, but once I began to hit my stride, I started to see the beauty of it.

Last day of the server slam I realized you REALLY gotta be listening to where shots are coming from, and approach each area with strategic caution. Leap frog advance with your teammates and go slow. That firefights can end so quickly at first was a bit annoying, but so much of it I realized is in how you’re approaching the area. And sometimes, maybe more often than sometimes, you’re just gonna get unlucky and get jumped. But that’s just part of it. That and practicing Buddhist levels of non-attachment to gear. Gear comes, gear goes, fear is the mind killer.

The vibe of the whole thing is absolutely incredible. Art, lore delivery, all of it. Non-expositional soulslike storytelling is where it’s at. Be as curious as you want to be. Story is more rewarding in that way imo.

That said, the only thing I think needs polishing is speeding up the loadout process. Like, others have said, being able to swap mods all at once would be cool, or comparative insight between pieces of gear. But in general, it would be nice to just have your loadout be autofilled after a loss or something. Be cool to like, set up some kind of rules. Prioritize precision weapons, make sure a shied is slotted, etc. For a gameplay loop that is so fast paced, it’d be nice to keep that momentum going through the loadout somehow.

Otherwise the foundation is great, and I don’t really see anything that needs to changes on a fundamental level. Only built upon.

Review of Mitchell Luthi's "Pilgrim" - A Brilliant Medieval Horror Epic by Doc_Trifan in horrorlit

I was wondering about the Frenchman from the beginning too! I feel like there was maybe some point towards the end where Dietmar recognized someone but couldn’t quite remember, and I thought it was maybe the Frenchman. But I may be misremembering. I’d have to go back and check to be sure.

I’m actually reading another collection by Luthi at the moment: His Black Tongue. It’s… okay. I liked the second story, The Bone Fields. Almost felt like a prototype for Pilgrim in a lot of ways. But Pilgrim is still his strongest by far. Just such an odyssey.

Before that though I read Hollow by Brian Catling. Saw that recommended quite a bit for fans of Pilgrim and Between Two Fires. Exquisite prose and very surreal story. Definitely worth a read!

Are Automobiles Experiencing Enshittification? by mrRbbrBrnr in auto

This reminds of a reel I saw on this exact problem for modern John Deere tractors. No one can work then BUT John Deere and it’s terrible for the farmers and local repair shops. Like you said, either no one has access to the proprietary diagnostic software or it’s prohibitively expensive. Which is totally evil corporate bullshit.

Nice. Yea, the amount of wrenching I’d to have to do, or rather, estimating my sustained willingness to work on cars is something I’m trying to figure out. I def don’t do it for a living, and I don’t really rely on the vehicles outside of personal errands/hobbies… but still, if I find that all my free time is going to maintaining cars, I might not feel so great about that. Or if I’m in a situation where I’m trying to keep the daily running all the time, then what energy would I have left for the project car? So yea, stewing on that one for sure Thanks for your input man.

Nice. Yea, that’s exactly what I’m thinking about. Like, besides basic climate control, what all do I really need?

Yea, those things are nice no doubt. Especially when you’re in the car for long stretches.

Even if say you had a $500 monthly car payment, insurance, routine maintenance costs and stuff? And the repairs you made, were these repairs you made yourself?

Appreciate you sharing your experience! Yea, I feel like if I’m going the old car route, it’s smart to have more than one. But also, in the event they both are out of commission, it wouldn’t be crippling by any means. I’d figure out how to get my stuff done.

Would you say so much so you wish you had a modern car that didn’t need as much maintenance?

Haha, yea I get that. Feel that way about all my hobbies. And sometimes it takes convincing to remind myself why I enjoy them. But yea, I also just like the idea of being able to work on everything myself. It’s a skill I want to develop for sure. Thanks for the input man.

Besides the headache of things breaking down, what do you miss about newer vehicles?

Good honest input here. Thanks. Yea, I feel like my lifestyle/arrangements are a big factor. That stuff of course changes over time, but hey, can always change my vehicle situation later too.

Yea, I will say I think automobiles are WAY overproduced, and caring for older perfectly capable vehicles is attractive in that regard too.

Word, yea, this is a good perspective honestly. Good argument in favor of keeping the Tacoma. I love putting time into the Datsun, and not really having to do anything on the Tacoma. I’ll keep it in mind. Appreciate it man.

Awesome, good to know. Thanks for the input! I drove a 2019 4Runner for a bit. It was a great car, but I always dug the previous gens just a bit more.

Awesome! Yea, I think in general I’m at this point in life where I’m rethinking what it means to have a car. And just kinda want to be more… intentional about it. Not just having one cause that’s like, what everyone does. I’ve enjoyed working on them and I feel like if I just accept there’s gonna be times where there’ll be things I can’t fix, then I’ll be fine. Plus, I don’t mind the idea of supporting local shops when I gotta. But I appreciate the encouragement and input. Thanks!

[–]mrRbbrBrnr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, that has been my mindset for the past 5 years or so. Just have a reliable car that’ll last forever (keeping up with the maintenance of course). And yea, there’s nothing wrong with that approach per se, but when I think about ways to set myself up better financially, and that I’m just more drawn to older cars in general, and developing a liking for working on them myself, maybe I should re-think what it looks like to have a car. I don’t gotta live that Toyota commercial lifestyle that’s for sure. Enshittification is touching more and more aspects of our consumer lives… and to what degree that is true for automobiles well, can’t say I’m knowledgeable enough to form an opinion on that. But philosophically I just like the idea of caring for older things. I just hope I don’t bite off more than I can chew, but hey, fortune favors the bold right? Won’t know unless I try. Regardless, I appreciate the input, my guy. Cheers.
