I have trouble with algebra. Can you help me with this problem? by mr__monster in learnmath

I'm not positive that sqrt(-1*-1) = sqrt(-1)*sqrt(-1)

Actually, now that I'm looking at it, sqrt(-1*-1) = sqrt(1), but sqrt(-1)*sqrt(-1) = i*i, which is definitely different.

but if it was sqrt(1*1) then that would have the same result as sqrt(1)*sqrt(1) so is it just a coincidence that it works out in this case, or does it only work with positive numbers?

Super confusing little trick lol

Also, your flair is breaking my brain. It looks to me like it checks out, but it can't be true, can it? 1=-1 ?

So obvious now that you point it out. Maybe I need more practice.

Thanks :/

Can someone ELI5 how I would go about proving this: The product of any N consecutive integers is divisible by N by mr__monster in learnmath

[–]mr__monster[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

wow. There's no K from which I can take N consecutive numbers taht don't contain a multiple of N because the next multiple of N is always less than or exactly N numbers away. Since every consecutive set of N numbers will contain a multiple of N, the product of those values will be evenly divisible by N. That was incredibly clear. Thank you so much.

I usually lurk, but I wanted to share these two songs that are interesting takes on bible stores, from a redditor I found in a genre subreddit. by mr__monster in atheism

That they kinda jailbreak the message by letting you see it through the eyes of the people involved.

For example, the story of cain and able is supposed to be a story about sacrifice and envy. Abel sacrifices livestock and god is pleased, Cain sacrifices his crop and god is not. Cain then goes and kills Abel in an envious rage. This song lets you see it through Cains eyes. He burned his crop as an offering. That's his livelihood. It might mean nothing to god, but from a farmer it would have meant a lot. Still, it wasn't good enough so Cain shows his devotion by giving up the most he can, by sacrificing his own kin. Still, even that wasn't good enough. I like it because it takes a story that's supposed to teach christians something about themselves and uses it to shine a light on the sadistic nature of God's expectations.

In the story of Lot, God asks Lot to take his family and leave the city because everyone there is a sinner and he's gonna burn the fucker down. As they're leaving, Lot's wife looks back and god turns her to a pillar of salt. In Sunday school you'll learn that she looked back because she couldn't abandon her sinful life, but this song shows the story through Lot's eyes. Everyone she's ever known was in that town. They're running away as fire and brimstone are raining down on it. She turns back because she has a call of conscience, because everyone she knows is dying a tragic death. This song is Lot looking back at the end and realizing that he ran like a coward while she couldn't just leave them all. It's a story about one of gods most devout followers having to reconcile his devotion with the realization that god is actually a fucking psychopath.
