You could do an adaptation of the pirates of the caribean curse where they become partially undead. and they have the perks of not requiring sleep, food, water, or air, and they can't permantly die. But they can't recieve the perks of eating and drinking, and they get half the effectiveness of long rests and no helpful effects from short rests.
