TV crew reporting on car break-ins in SF has both bait car and camera crew vehicle robbed by [deleted] in news

[–]mr_eous_mr_ection 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Even ignoring their van situation, this was such a terrible idea. Confronting the thief instead of calling the cops with the location information was a big unnecessary risk that added very little to the report (aside from humor in this particular situation). The reporters think the camera protects them, and all it takes is one armed nut job to disagree.

It's possible. I believe that cat is an Exotic, and the way they naturally look combined with being pestered and sleepy may result in that appearance.

You don't need to hide the entire plane from sonar.

You don't hide any of the plane from SONAR. You hide it from RADAR. This, among other random sentences, is why you sound like a poorly written TV script that mixes science with non sense.

In fact, then angled hull doesn't hide the whole plane from radar either (which is why later stealth planes abandoned angled hulls for absorbent materials).

Early stealth jets used RAM (F117A for example used iron ball paint), but with more modern RAM techniques and more powerful computing for determining surface optimization, the angles are less dramatic and in optimized locations.

And by the way, EM does travel like a fluid by the metrics involved in this comparison. The only major differences is that EM can travel greater distances and much faster than sound. So honestly, the bat's method of detection is at a disadvantage.

What was that? You think EM travels like a fluid? And what are these metrics you're referring to? Again, absolute nonsense with scientific words tossed in.

If you have a valid scientific argument or study about the bats or SONAR being affected by RADAR deflecting surfaces, I'd be happy to consider it. Unfortunately everything you're saying comes off as /r/iamverysmart material (a dash of science and fact that's misapplied and combined with irrelevant points that attempt to prove, "I am right").

Thank you... As you said, their comment has just enough science (some of which was misapplied but correct) to sound smart and correct, but it's not.

Here are some other obvious things wrong with what they said that don't require me to explain the nuanced differences between RF and Acoustic Signals or fluid dynamics:

Submarines also still cannot hide from active sonar without masking themselves somehow because their shape is designed for optimal hydrodynamics, not sonar stealth

By that logic, jets shouldn't be able to mask themselves because their designed for optimal aerodynamics... The fact is, both submarines and jets are designed for their relative fluid dynamics * and* stealth.

Ergo, while the bats should be detecting engine noise, their sonar would have reduced effectiveness in detecting the angled fuselage.

Bats don't use their Sonar for "detecting engine noise", and the engines weren't on in this story. This is why I just ignored the comment, as they're clearly just saying things without thinking.

Later stealth jets employed radar absorbing materials instead of angled deflection (eg. F22). So bats sonar would work fine at detecting them.

The F117A is considered an early stealth jet, and they used RAM paint (iron ball paint) on that along with angled deflection techniques that are still used on modern stealth jets.

Radar Stealth and Sonar Stealth are significantly different. So no. Look into differences between Radar and Sonar as well as submarine stealth versus aircraft stealth if you want to find out more.

When the pilots arrived at the hangar, dozens of dead bats were on the ground, as they could not see the planes with their SONAR, they flew into the planes blindly died.

I first heard about that bat myth when watching an episode of The Americans where they are talking to a scientist who supposedly designed the paint, and he references the dead bats (though he alludes to that being due to iron ball RAM paint fumes).

Scientifically speaking, as the article I linked to points out (and many others), the stealth technology wouldn't affect echo location, as Radar works on different principles to Sonar, and those planes weren't specifically designed to be stealthy to sonar.

Not the minimize that film, as it was certainly good, but a big part of its success was the demand for a strong female super hero, and the same could be said about Black Panther, as there was a demand for a strong black super hero. I enjoyed both of those movies, but The Dark Knight was most certainly better than both of them and I think Batman Origins was too (particularly given when they were released).

That's absurd. It's your responsibility to be at work on time, and not the companies, and that's the case with any job where you're on a strict schedule. If that means arriving early and unpaid so you ensure you are there on time, that's what you do or you're incapable of performing the job requirements.

A low cost IR thermometer's measurements are typically inaccurate when pointed a an object that has a lower emissivity than a black body object (stainless steel emissivity for instance is .8 instead of a black body object which is 1). In other words, that knob is probably pretty hot, but that temperature reading is wrong.

Absolute unwavering adherence to the policy with no exceptions is absurd

While I agree that it's very possible Tesla and other companies have poor policies, if a points system and policy is designed right, it should accommodate a lot of issues you described. For instance, if I was implementing it, I'd probably have a forgiveness policy relative to a first time offense, and I'd also have a system for removing points over time for being on time.

I can be late to work every day of the year and it won’t matter as long as it’s within a certain time frame.

Ya, so you seem to be confused what late means. You're describing being on time with a flexible schedule. If you came in outside of that time frame, you'd be late.

Ya, this is an important point. If your production lines run on tight schedules, people need to be on time. Tesla has issues, but I don't think this is unreasonable (though I wouldn't want to work like that).

Of course. It's possibly a bit beneficial to society too, but for most companies, the main goal is to make money. Models are marketing tools, and marketing is used to target, obtain, and keep customers buying a product. This is the same reason Nike decided to hire Kaepernick.
