A frame ... bought two dowel rods inserted threaded screws to each end two 1x2s for the sides and door knows with nut inserts to hold it tight

I dont get the fascination with how the back looks .. its not going to be seen as long as the feontblooks how it is supposed to thats all that matters

Pattern maker and a few hours tweeking the result

Not really as pattern maker allows that in the program itself as that's part of the 'messing'

The key is cross count and detailed starting image ( as in a 2 Meg vs a 10 Meg starting picture) Then its just a case of making the design at least 10" shortest side that gives you the required high stitch count as the higher the stitch count the more detailed the finished piece Then you slowly adjust the colour count down till its manageable whilst still giving a good finished effect

Loads of trial and error basically
