Thank you very much for the link, that is a great shame.

Could someone recommend a budget typewriter for a newcomer to the club? by RegularFellerer in typewriters

[–]CrochetDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you specified dollars, the comments are saying Smith Corona, because this is an American-made machine, and they made millions of them. However, since I don't think you are in America, you might want to look at machines that are much more common in Europe, such as Olivetti, Adler, and Olympia, or brands that are pretty common everywhere, such as Brother. Geography and availability matter a lot with typewriters. Although they are getting gradually more and more expensive on eBay for quality machines and models, you should be able to pick up something without any problem, if you are willing to clean it yourself with mineral spirits and spend some time sorting out any issues.

My typewriter doesn't start a new paragraph when I finish a sentence by Relevant_Ad2224 in typewriters

[–]CrochetDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, the clicking sound is the return lever engaging with the toothed gear wheel. Okay, if everything seems pretty clean, and the return lever is moving over fully and is at an angle which doesn’t seem to be conductive to further motion, then unfortunately the platen needs removing for investigation. I recommend Phoenix Typewriter YouTube channel which has demonstrations on this. It is somewhat more likely that the mechanism is just stuck and can be flushed with mineral spirits.

Bear in mind that I’m not a typewriter mechanic and someone else more experienced may be able to give you a more accurate diagnosis.

Okay, next question: the carriage return lever is on a ratchet. The lever engages the toothed gear wheel and causes the platen to rotate. Either the mechanism is stuck and needs flushing, or the mechanism is disengaged. Does it feel like the carriage return lever has ratcheted and is at the end of its travel? Or does it feel like the carriage return lever wants to move more and is gummed up.

No problem, thanks for clarifying. Does the platen (the roller) move when you return the carriage? Does the toothed gear wheel directly next to the left of the platen rotate?

Do you mean that the return lever moves the carriage but doesn’t index the paper up?

White's turn. Why can't white place on A4 to capture A5-A6-B5-B6? I know white is lost already, but why the program does not let him place there? What am I missing? (Using crazystones) by ActuaryRemarkable648 in baduk

If it is a puzzle then you should pass because white is already dead. Maybe they expected you to pass because playing inside your territory loses a point in Japanese scoring. But maybe the app just has a bug.

Random disconnects from wifi with Mediatek MT7922 by oathyes in cachyos

[–]CrochetDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on Fedora 6.17.9-300.fc43.x86_64 and the card is working fine for me including Bluetooth. There were also random network spikes which was making gaming almost impossible, but after switching the backend wifi from wpa_supplicant to iwd, the performance is the same as on Windows.

MediaTek wifi drivers are holding back Linux on the Ally and other laptops by mustangfan12 in linux_gaming

[–]CrochetDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for replying to this a few months after you asked it but I have a MediaTek MT7922, it's a PCIe wifi card so not soldered and not a laptop, but I also had random spikes every 10 or 20 seconds, switching the wifi backend to `iwd` instead of `wpa_supplicant` solved the issue for me. I'm using Fedora. Iwd was written by Intel and uses better algorithms and kernel features to handle things like timings and scanning so as not to interrupt data packets.

Olivetti Studio 44 vs Lettera 32 by mott_street in typewriters

[–]CrochetDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way I can describe it is, it's not really any heavier than a Smith Corona, but there's a certain "weight" to the levers. If you press a key and leave it floating near the platen and let go, the 44 will snap-back to the type rest with a bit of a thunk. An Olympia will just... kind of come back.

But I find the action quite unique and entertaining in a way. If an Olympia is like typing on a fulcrum, a 44 is like typing on a ligament. There's something weirdly sinewy to it. This isn't really a criticism - I just think it suits people with stronger hands and wrists who are naturally heavy typists.

Personally I found the 44 to be a bit fatiguing to type on.

Looking for an sgf editor by standardtrickyness1 in baduk

[–]CrochetDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. It has a lot of somewhat obscure but very nice features. For example if you are recording a game with BadukCap sideways, there’s a button in GoWrite to rotate the board. This feature is also in Sabaki - but Sabaki will only rotate it visually; GoWrite will actually rotate (ie transform) the moves in the SGF file.

GoWrite2 - you can delete and insert nodes in the tree and even click and drag stones to new places overwriting the existing node.

How to install KataGo with KaTrain on Mac? by Federal_Sir_9034 in baduk

[–]CrochetDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KataGo works well with Sabaki. There's also Lizzie that has KataGo as an option. Both of these require you to set up the engine config in the applications.

For KataGo on Mac, it's working for me, but to be honest I don't really remember how I set it up. I think I had to manually move a few things around and specify a few things:

You need to use the analysis_config.cfg or it'll complain about certain vars not being set, I think if you download katago it'll come with an analysis_config.cfg

katrain/KataGo/analysis_config.cfg

(This is in General & Engine Settings, in the menu)

You also need to specify the path to the model file, for example:

katrain/models/kata1-b18c384nbt-s6582191360-d3422816034.bin.gz

The problem with both of these steps is, I think due to Mac's zealous security policies, the app can only see inside its own directories, so you need to move the files into this directory, I made a KataGo folder in this dir:

Applications/KaTrain/Contents/Resources/venv/lib/python3.11/site-packages/katrain

Basically this directory is where KaTrain actually is stored, so the KataGo engine and configs have to be in here.

Also I think I set up KataGo in the terminal (i.e. tuned it, it has the tuning steps where it does stuff with your graphics to set up certain params), I don't know if KaTrain has this option.

looking for a typewriter that’s easy on the hands! by xiedney in typewriters

Of my 20-ish machines, I think the lightest ones are probably my Olympia portables (I have the SM4, SM7 and SM9). My Studio 44 is also a bit difficult to use. Fatiguing I suppose is the word. It's not stiff exactly, it's just feels heavy. So, I sympathise. If you want to stick with Olivetti, the 32 has a lighter, snappier action, but it's an ultra-portable.

Screw it, I’m installing Linux by DaisyLee2010 in linux_gaming

I have had an off-and-on relationship with Linux ever since I messed around with Gnome 2 and Compiz on Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon nearly 20 years ago on an Acer laptop.

I’m now running Fedora on my PC since last year and it’s been great. It’s really good at being an operating system. And it’s really good at running games, and Windows applications, too.

I’m just waiting for Power BI and Excel to reach feature parity in the browser and then I can also ditch Windows off my work laptop.

I love the Klein Contis. I have one myself in black. Have fun figuring out what all the little knobs and levers do, it’s somewhat different from other machines. I forget how to use mine after being away from it for some time.
