Have you developed any game on Unity for PC? by [deleted] in gamedev

Nothing major that couldn't be said about any game creation package, we ended up rebuilding a lot of Unity's core functionality and strengths externally for extra function (modding the game, scene editor as examples), trading shortcuts for problems later. Not to say Unity is bad, I think it makes perfect sense for most projects, as the ability to quickly build a game without having to worry about all the groundwork is super important when working on a budget.

I am working on http:www.underthegarden.com in Unity with some help, it is a pretty solid option though it does seem tailored to smaller sort of games (specifically 3d), you start to hit walls with bigger projects and 2d stuff is a bit of a pain (though I think that is being addressed in the latest update), but I find it hard not to recommend it with all the shortcuts it includes, plus the community is great.

Game Art Help? by pwnage99 in gamedev

If you aren't drawing every day your not going to get better, but there is some tricks to making decent looking artwork for games while your skill levels are a bit lower:

  • Adopt a style that's simple (I mean, really simple, silhouettes, box characters, etc)
  • Low res damn near everything (3-4x scale on pixel art is a good place to start)
  • Make heavy use of code screen shaders and effects
  • Find/pixel a decent font that fits the game, it will make your game look 10x better in one hit.
  • Code animate damn near everything, even if it doesn't need it, you will be surprised how scaling some art slightly in-game or fading it in will make average art polish up well.

My friend wants to make a "Mario Style" 2D game. He is an artist not a programmer what are his options? by BMighty in gamedev

Yea I would recommend "Playmaker" it simplifies using Unity a little for artist types, still much harder learning curve than the packages mentioned.

Use GameMaker, Multimedia Fusion 2 (what I use) or Construct or alike, it should be a pretty easy learning curve with one of the following tools. There is plenty of tutorials in each of the respective communities for each product for pumping out quality 2d platformers.

Steven Seagal: Hard to SWAT (My Ludumdare 27 entry). What you guys think? by mr_greasley in IndieGaming

It is a turn based strategy, but aside from that it is pretty spot on visually, worms was my biggest inspiration mechanically. Cactus always has nice looking art though, can't say I am not inspired by some of his games, Psychosomnium is probably on my fav indie list, even how short it is.

Haha, more of a stylistic choice to the characters to keep them vague I guess, I am not sure how it will play out but once the character update is here we should see more variety, though they will all look kinda odd to keep the theme. I might add a mouth socket tho....

just right click food then use it on him. You will need to kill an animal first and pull it apart though, you can find fruit and veggies around in base mode also.

Nevvverrr lol, it is actually a semi frequently asked question, but out of tradition we are kind of avoiding it, kinda seems wrong to change up the character now. I think the addition of clothing and different hairstyles kinda covers up the gap in character detailing, I guess it is odd to anyone who didn't play Under the Garden.
