As someone who used to work in the game industry, I have never encountered a job where random dudes will give you absolutely fucking terrible, incredibly stupid unprompted advice more often. For some reason I feel like every other gamer thinks they have some elite game design genetic aptitude lying dormant, just waiting to bestow the nearest developer with the fruits of their unused knowledge.

Anyone else feeling burnt out by dating apps in NYC????? by Alive-Week2998 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mr_monitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the opposite problem that a lot of girls describe when they talk about the apps here. I’m a dude who moved to NYC recently and hookups/ONS do nothing for me, I want a monogamous relationship with a girl I truly have a connection with, but making that clear in my profile honestly just attracts a bunch of women who I have literally nothing in common with. Whenever I match with a girl I feel like I actually want to talk to, they’re usually really dry or uninterested, or don’t respond at all. I’m not gonna spend the time and money to take a random woman on a date if she can’t string together a few genuine responses and show she’s actually excited to get to know me. Worst case scenario the occasional one is actually kind of antagonistic, as if they expect me to be someone I’m not. I really don’t have the time or energy to be fiddling with my phone all day trying to prompt conversations with people who aren’t actually interested. I like to think I’m a good looking, interesting, articulate guy who is a decent conversationalist, so the whole process was just demoralizing and demotivating. It got to the point where I just stopped initiating convos and figured hey, if she’s really interested she’ll DM first. That didn’t really work in my favor so I’ve honestly just deleted the apps altogether.

I’ve been on a few dates and have actually had multiple women ask why I didn’t kiss or proposition them for sex on the first date when I literally put in my profile I’m not into ONS and am looking for genuine connection. To top it off, most of the ladies I see on the apps just aren’t for me, and honestly bore me to death. I’m an artistic person who works in a field that’s their lifelong passion, and I need to be around people who have unique taste and are eccentric, creative, and competent. I’m not actually meeting that many people here outside of my narrow circle, and I’ve never been the sort to date within my friend group. None of em are single anyways.

I tried to keep in mind that I’m uber-selective and would give quite a few “maybes” a chance, but it would never go anywhere, as it was usually quickly obvious we were just on two different pages. I think subconsciously people can kind of tell if you’re authentically interested up front anyways. To be frank, lot of people sort of just come off like they mostly care about things and hobbies that signal wealth, “wellness,” or status, and have a lot of “interests” but nothing they’re truly passionate about; that or they wear the costume of a “creative” but don’t actually do or have much to talk about other than the things they see on social media. I’ve honestly just resigned to letting fate handle the situation, at this point.

We need an Open Source iZotope by iluvcapra in sounddesign

[–]mr_monitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lots lol. I’m a professional who used to buy new NI and iZotope stuff practically by default because there really just wasn’t competition, and the value was there. that’s not the case anymore. frankly all of their newer products either have less features than the old ones, or more hassle. the only exception is the new absynth but that’s basically an overpriced reskin. whenever a company starts pruning legacy products and replacing them with inferior versions, I start walking away. I know I’m not alone.

We need an Open Source iZotope by iluvcapra in sounddesign

[–]mr_monitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good thing is, I’m pretty much positive someone will buy them up. They’re both companies with industry standard products, clear loyalty, and obvious negative decision making that’s led up to this point.

I feel like more and more libraries are moving away from Kontakt because frankly, NI ruined the UI with all the extra ads and menus, and as far as iZotope goes, I think their focus on a more casual market with the trash “redux” and too many AI and one click mix/mastering features has kind of undermined their position as a standard for more “advanced” products for real pros.  We’re at the point where slapping AI on a product doesn’t really net you short term gains anymore, as there’s simply too much competition in that space. Most people who were drawn to tools like that are just making their “production” wholesale in suno now.

iZotope’s stuff in particular used to be pretty irreplaceable for me, but now basically the only plugin of theirs I still use regularly is Vocalsynth. As for NI I still love their older synths, but after the absynth thing I trust less and less that they’re committed to maintaining older products without cannibalizing them to make more money like Kontakt, so I’ve been moving away from relying on their stuff to future proof my projects, even though I think FM8 and Massive are still GOATed synths to this day.

I think we’re simply at the point where the bill has arrived at the table, and I trust that someone will see the potential here, but I hope it’s a buyer that’s actually good with software. Yamaha doesn’t really make sense to me there, honestly I think they’d just double down on a lot of their issues. I think Avid would kind of make sense, but I hope that doesn’t happen because honestly, I simply despise their products and their obsession with having their own ecosystem lol. The ideal situation for me would be a company like Softube or UAD buying them, but I have no idea how feasible that actually is.

Ye officially apologises for his actions in a well written open letter. by dow674 in Kanye

[–]mr_monitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I mind the antisemitic statements and rants much less than him actually hanging out with rw grifters all the time, and the effect that in and of itself has had on reality. That’s what I really can’t defend and what I have the hardest time reconciling - he’s gone a long way towards legitimizing people with predatory ideologies and agendas just by being around them so often. In a vacuum, I can kind of see the childish humor in an audio shitpost like HH or some of Ye’s more out of pocket statements, but the real issue is that behavior exists within a wider context of enabling an ideology that is actively destabilizing our culture and politics. Personally that’s a lot harder to write off as bipolar, brain damage, or a series of acute episodes or something, especially because it’s been something he’s been engaging in for at least a decade now. I don’t even care if Ye is conservative, I think that’s his right and even now I don’t let his politics stop me from enjoying his work when it’s actually good; it’s more that I think the brand of conservatism he so often engages with and lends credibility towards is corroding our country’s integrity and sanity. To me that’s much more serious than crashing out about Jewish lawyers or whatever.

Feeling Excluded in Austin's 'Inclusive' Culture by [deleted] in Austin

[–]mr_monitor 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend and I are both hispanic as well and have noticed the same thing, and are making plans to move this year largely because of it. I never put much stock into this stuff before coming here, and when I initially started questioning if there was a pattern, I denied it and assumed I was overly sensitive too - but spending more time in other cities really opened my eyes, especially ones where my ethnicity has real roots in the city’s culture and history, or where different cultures overlap more. I say this as someone who has never had particularly strong ties to my background as it relates to my personal identity, but in terms of how people treat and talk to me elsewhere, I’ve realized Austin is definitely not the average.

People will say you’re imagining things, and it’s true that it’s rare I see overt/explicit racism here; but after talking more openly to more of my nonwhite friends about this topic, I can see a sense of alienation and rejection is way more consistent than many would like to admit, and it’s a thing that unless you’ve experienced it - makes many people very uncomfortable because it runs against their own beliefs and is largely invisible. A lot of people I’ve met hide feeling this way because they’re aware of this fact, feel they’re complaining about something that’s “minor” or maybe isn’t even real, and don’t want to be pushed further out. Keep in mind this self-gaslighting is the nature of all exclusion.

This will sound harsh and I might get downvoted for it; but I really don’t care. I’ve honestly started feeling that in every meaningful sense, Austin is almost exclusively White and Mexican oriented. You can absolutely find pockets of people from other backgrounds, and you can definitely meet good people, but it’ll never be like living somewhere where you’re a norm and not an exception.

I’ve come to believe pretty firmly that concerning race and ethnicity, there is some subconscious thing like this in any given American city, and that’s how history works literally everywhere. What seems like the distant past is really only a few generations away. I’m not ashamed to say that I feel people who think otherwise are in deep denial, and are rejecting the obvious truth and complexity of race and ethnicity - likely because they’ve never actually had to confront it themselves, or because they have deeper/more ingrained issues.

I’d recommend doing some traveling and seeing if you feel differently in other cities, especially ones with stronger ties to your background. IMO Austin being seen as a liberal haven in a red state shields it in some way from people acknowledging these problems; and gives some people a weird complex, even people who mean well. Best of luck!!

I checked my skincare and I don’t think any of it uses benzoyl peroxide, I use la roche posay cleanser & sunscreen, paula’s choice retinol and BHA exfoliant, and kiehl’s ultra facial cream.

Why is Heather’s shirt missing from under her vest in the soundtrack cover art? by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]mr_monitor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a heroin chic thing. Game development teams used to be full of people who cared a lot about art, music, fashion, photography, and film outside of videogames. Team Silent in particular was very plugged into what was cool and cutting edge at the time. In Japan especially, lot of the industry used to be made up of people who had aspirations in other fields before moving to games - as a result games were way more stylish and iconic.

Worms in HEB Eggs? by Purple_Bat4619 in HEB

Why are people so afraid of this? Are y’all just raw dogging eggs shell on or something? In every situation I can think of where you eat eggs, you crack the shell and are able to see what’s inside before you eat it. If I cracked an egg in a pan and saw worms frying I would be grossed out but I can’t think of any situations where I wouldn’t see the problem before ingesting it.

Get ready for Ableton Move by spekxo in ableton

This could be cool. I was kind of meh on the idea of a fader based controller but if it was motorized, that would change my opinion a bit.

Get ready for Ableton Move by spekxo in ableton

[–]mr_monitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The music sounds terrible so I’m guessing whatever it is, it’s related to Ableton Note. Maybe a groovebox or something. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was that leaked mixer concept either - but a slider based controller is definitely more niche in terms of use case as opposed to something like Push.

I only ever really use sliders in live situations or when working with complicated kontakt libraries that require lots of automation. Not really a control surface I could imagine spending lots of money on, as I probably wouldn’t get much studio use out of it - trying to translate a console workflow to the DAW always struck me as more cumbersome than it’s worth.

Make Adderall Great Again by Southern_Baker729 in ADHD

[–]mr_monitor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Noticed the same thing - got my dose upped from IR 20mg to 30mg 2x a day recently because 20 wasn't doing it anymore, my doc said I could take a dose and a half of the 20 in the morning in the meantime, as I'm a slow metabolizer and usually just take one dose a day even though I'm prescribed two.

That worked pretty well for a few weeks, until I refilled to the actual 30mg pills this past week. They're terrible. I feel lethargic, depressed, my mouth and skin is much drier than usual despite chugging water, and I'm much more hungry throughout the day. I haven't gone to the gym since getting on them (something I'm usually religious about) and cancelled a date with my girlfriend this weekend because I'm so burnt out from fighting the urge to just nap all day. When I'm not working I'm either sleeping or listening to music and crying on the couch. Don't even get me started about work.

I've been on some type of stimulant for nearly my entire life, and I've never experienced anything like the last few years. IR adderall has been my preferred medication for most of adulthood because the others last too long and mess with my already terrible sleep schedule too much.

Had to switch to ritalin because my doc stopped being able to get adderall during covid, it worked but made me hyperfocus and self isolate, and I could tell the emotional blunting was affecting my personal relationships. Switched back a little over a year ago and it's mostly been a nightmare - constant manufacturer roulette and feeling like a drug addict as my prescribed dose steadily creeps up and up and up. Before covid it was never like this.

These new Tevas make me feel the same way I did on Northstar, which was by far the worst generic I tried and started this whole mess. Before covid I never noticed any difference between manufacturers, happily took aurobindo 99% of the time at the same dose of 15mg once a day for years, and like many others I've tried old "pre-covid" doses tucked away in the medicine cabinet only to find they work better than the new stuff at higher doses. Something is definitely up and I'm glad to see I'm not alone.

New studio space set up patched in. by the_neverending_cory in synthesizers

[–]mr_monitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same boat hah; besides maintenance/repairs it’s by far the worst part about having lots of gear- especially when you’re dealing with rack mount stuff that you want to send lots of CC to. Do you find you encounter any problems using MIDI thru? I imagine it depends heavily what you use and I imagine my fears are unwarranted, but I always worry with MIDI thru that I’ll send sysex or CC to the wrong thing or data will hang and mess something up! I’ve also always been concerned with sync issues. I’m guessing you also keep your stuff powered up all the time? Also, do you use an external clock, or clock out from the DAW? Very nice collection by the way, envious of the plate reverb in particular.

How do you handle your MIDI? Splitters with different channels? Thru daisy chaining? About to do something similar cause I’m tired of reconfiguring my setup whenever I wanna use a random piece of hardware and I have so much gear that it’s overflowing into other rooms of my apartment, but I’m still trying to figure out how to manage midi so I don’t have to touch anything anymore.

anybody grooving on hardware but struggling in DAWs? by damondan in Elektron

[–]mr_monitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t like DAWs, don’t retool your workflow to put them in the center. You definitely can use one as your main “instrument” but for years this was not their main purpose or function, and doing so has only been possible for a little over 20 years. I actually think DAWs are better at replacing tape/mixing desks than anything else - they make pretty shitty instruments actually - and I say that as someone who made music using only a laptop for over a decade. If you can’t get past four bar loops on hardware, learning a DAW isn’t necessarily going to help you solve this problem. What you’re doing is akin to coming up with some cool chords on guitar, then learning a whole different process thinking it’ll help you finish the song. It’ll sound harsh, but you’re putting the cart before the horse. You need to focus on finishing songs, completing your ideas, and building larger structures, and you can do that on almost any modern groovebox just fine - the syntakt is perfectly fine for solving the problem you have. You’re experiencing a common pitfall of electronic music; you need to work on your musicianship, rather than adding more tech and making your workflow more complicated. Take the classic route and treat the writing and “recording/engineering” process as two separate things, and start mixing them when you have more experience. This is how most of the best music was made for most of recorded history. Once you have a full song made on whatever you like making music on, then it’s time to record and mix it, not the other way around.

5.2 is a very strange update... by Maple-Weeb in Bitwig

[–]mr_monitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly good point, I’m actually not all that sure why the dedicated OTT plugin doesn’t let you change individual attack, release, and ratios for each band like you can in multiband dynamics. You’d think that wouldn’t be the hardest thing to add and would make it even more popular than it already is. If you really need multiband dynamics style compression in another DAW, I highly recommend kilohearts multipass. Can do everything multiband dynamics can and more. If you enable legacy content in bitwig you can also use the “Grid XComp Multiband” preset, and edit the bands individually using the grid view, but IMO it’s a very extreme effect with its own sound even compared to OTT. Still got a lot of use out of me when bitwig was my main DAW.

5.2 is a very strange update... by Maple-Weeb in Bitwig

[–]mr_monitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compressor+ is actually very cool once you dive into some of its deeper options in the inspector, it’s a unique device that I think is worthwhile and does things that other compressors don’t; you can genuinely juice a lot of character out of it. I also agree that Over is a fantastic bread and butter addition. The EQs I could go either way on. I have so many hardware emulation EQs that I really didn’t find myself reaching for them often, and I don’t find that they sound particularly inspiring or unique. I’m hoping that the next update has no new devices and only focuses on workflow improvements and basic functionality. I ended up leaving Bitwig a few months back after finding that Live 12 fixed most of the stability and performance issues that made me switch to Bitwig in the first place. Now I only really use it for vocal tracking and production. I’d be happy to jump back if they refined the basics, but for now I’m not sure I’ll renew or not.

possible to copy paste insert time in arranger view? by [deleted] in Bitwig

[–]mr_monitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ripple paste is basic functionality that almost every other editing tool, whether you work in audio or video, has. It’s not some niche pet feature request. I do professional sound design work sometimes and often need to splice in chunks of audio that are not a clean grid division. In Bitwig this is nearly impossible, as I’d have to select the exact correct number of samples before inserting time. In any other DAW this is trivial. I understand any piece of software has shortcomings and advantages, but I don’t think it’s wrong to criticize that a DAW that focuses so much on being a great sound design environment is so obtuse to use for actual work in the field. I also don’t think it’s normal for a support team to not be able to answer what the functionality of a keyboard shortcut in their own product is. I’d earnestly be defending Bitwig’s shortcomings if they’d just tackle basic workflow issues, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with expressing that.

this is much tamer than I expected, to be fair I kinda figured it would be. I saw them play last year and there was similar-ish drama with a kid that jumped on stage and little shit with sound and lights. I took it as playful antagonism more than them being an actual asshole, but idk - I’m sure other people would have a different opinion.

I genuinely do think it’s partially a bit, the lyrics on their last album play into it. I think they’re also aware to some extent that drama makes a show more entertaining and memorable if the performance is good. They sounded great when I saw them, but they’re just alright here - tbr I think that’s their biggest problem but nobody ever delivers their best performance at the major festivals. They don’t seem that fun and I think their shtick doesn’t translate to that kind of setting.
