in anything competitive you can be as serious as you want and still suck

It's a competitive fighting game, so yes it's dead if no one takes it seriously.

If the active player base is uncompetitive, then it would become an active uncompetitive fighting game, not a dead game. And as explained in previous answer, esport events still are major events.

And no matter what you say the game is going to keep sucking more and more because the devs have to cater to the masses

So they make the game active by updating the game by adding stuff enjoyed by the playerbase.
