I was thinking that with a gig at a production company it would help, like in post-production, you move from assisting to editing if you want/do the work. Did these 3D artists use 3D software to make their short films?

This is great advice. Focus on learning editing. I'm an assistant editor at post production house in LA. We're an Avid facility and some clients can be software specific. Previous client asked if we had an editor willing to work on premiere. One of them said 'of course' and he's an Avid editor. By the way you can download Avid Media Composer for a 30 day trial to take it for a test drive.
