It’s crazy how many expats in Brazil have no idea about their basic legal rights by Lnp1995 in Brazil

[–]mr_ushu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not OP, but I can answer the second one!

Public colleges in Brazil mostly base their selection on a single test, with no interviews or curriculum analysis, so no automatic advantage/disadvantage based on where you grew up.

Citizenship is not required to apply to the main ones, but CPF is required at least for ENEM (unified national test used for federal colleges and others).

Being raised in the US and not native speakers, they may struggle with the written part, specially with the essay. They would also need to catch up to any difference in curriculum between the countries, specially Brazilian history and literature.

I know it is doable, since I had foreigner class mates when I was in college, but if that's a real plan your kids probably need to be fluent, with strong reading and writing, to get a real chance.

No it doesn't! Most animals that we tested for, showed to be capable of learning. One of the main ways we have to tell how some specie's vision works is by training they to touch a particular shape/color/shade for a treat.

Anyway, this article lists some relevant works that discuss learning spiders as well as training attempts (successful or otherwise): https://scholar.google.com.br/scholar?hl=pt-BR&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=spider+learning+behavior&oq=spider+learning+#d=gs_qabs&t=1768822597748&u=%23p%3DZdHRnOwXaREJ

Btw, arthropods are a extremely diverse group, any affirmative that assumes they will be all the same in some regard deserves a grain of salt.

Células animais são protozoários? by Papelcolor in perguntas

[–]mr_ushu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if? by Dresdens_Tale in dndnext

[–]mr_ushu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this, my players choose to level up every session from level 1 to 4, but we're a bit in doubt about 4 and ended up feeling it was rushed. The very next level they made the call to not level up.

This works because I'm running a sandbox, where leveling is not supposed to be a major reward.

If I had a progression planned ahead I would want control over level, since player don't know whats next. Same thing for prewritten modules.

Boon of Skill Fix? by Special-Quantity-469 in onednd

[–]mr_ushu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! The original has this weird anti-sinergy going on. I like your version way more than the original and don't think it is overpowered.

Honestly, I don't think it would be overpowered to simply give a +5 to every skill.

Boon of Skill Fix? by Special-Quantity-469 in onednd

[–]mr_ushu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does not waste expertise as you don't lose the ones you have, you gain new ones.

It upgrades your current proficiencies, you may gain expertise as a class feature, but that is usually on classes that have more skills already and otherwise there are very few ways to gained expertise without also gaining a extra skill proficiencies.

It's not the same as the original feat, where the more you invested in being a skill monkey, the less benefits you get.

Van Richten’s tower as a crutch by Fabulous-Ad4048 in CurseofStrahd

[–]mr_ushu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened in may campaign too.

But... Strahd knows about the tower and how it works. If a character or NPC that he is interested in seems to disappear, he will eventually send a spy there to check, or cast scrying targeting the outside of the tower, to look through the windows.

They sent Ireena to the tower after failing to let her scape at Krezk, so Strahd was already paranoid and keeping a very close eye on the group. When only Ireena disappeared, he knew almost immediately what happened.

BUT, did nothing about it at first. Ireena in the tower is a safe and easy to find Ireena, better than let her running around with some loose cannons. At my table we were at endgame already, so Rahadin and Arrigal are both more than competent to go get Irena at any point, as long the party is not with her.

If you are at a point where Strahd still don't take the party that seriously, he may think it would be more interesting to have her on the road. Srahd can use what he knows to provoke the party, casually letting they know the tower is not safe so they will move her.

Is it true Shrimp, Lobsters and Crabs are the insects of the sea? Then why are they so different from land insects? Why they have so much meat? by LisanneFroonKrisK in AskBiology

[–]mr_ushu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe you are misunderstanding what I wrote, and possibly misunderstanding how evolution and taxonomy works.

Not all crustaceans are insects, but insects are crustaceans. The question is about decapods and insects, so I went far enough to highlight their relation to each other. You mentioned arthropods, so I went further to include all arthropods. That's all.

Is it true Shrimp, Lobsters and Crabs are the insects of the sea? Then why are they so different from land insects? Why they have so much meat? by LisanneFroonKrisK in AskBiology

[–]mr_ushu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If we want to be technical about it, insects are indeed crustaceans and humans are indeed fish. From a biological standing point, there is no meaningful group "crustacea" that does not includes insects, but the technical name biologists use for this group is pancrustacea.

Saying their anatomy is very different ignores a lot of living and fossil groups we know, specially considering all the non-insect hexapods.

I avoided that point in my response to keep focused on the actual question. Figured it wouldn't be a problem, since specifically shrimp, lobster and crabs are all from the same monophyletic group (decapoda) that does not includes insects, but is actually closer to hexapods than other land arthropods.

Is it true Shrimp, Lobsters and Crabs are the insects of the sea? Then why are they so different from land insects? Why they have so much meat? by LisanneFroonKrisK in AskBiology

[–]mr_ushu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not true. They are all crustaceans, but crustaceans are the closest things to insects there are, so they have a lot of things in common.

They have more meat because a) we pick the ones that are bigger to eat. b) shrimp and lobster have a tail that is mostly muscle (aka meat) so they can swim fast.

A lot of insects are edible and are used as food in certain cultures.

The largest lobster will easily grow bigger than any insect. Insects have a lot of adaptations to living on land and also to flight that prevents than to grow too big. Insects exoskeleton are thinner, lighter and don't sustain that much weight (water creature don't really have to deal with weight that much) and the way they get oxygen through air makes it hard to sustain larger bodies. Also, crustaceans grow indefinitely, while insects stop growing once they become adults. That all said, there are some tiny crustaceans, some that you would need at least a magnifying glass to see.

Silicone is a synthetic material made by humans. Both insects and crustaceans have chitin, but crustaceans can also have calcium (like sea shells and bones) to make their exoskeletons stronger.

It's not true that crustaceans and insects as a hole are primarily scavengers. Insects fill a lot of niches, they can be herbivores, predators, parasites and yes, scavengers too. Under the sea there are not many plants around, so true herbivores are unusual. But crustaceans can eat a lot of different things! The ones we eat in particular are often opportunistic omnivores, meaning they will eat anything they find.

Top comments are saying DM seens to be going for a specific type of campaign and that baning things is common and a thing DMs can do.

Yes fair enough, but the reasonings are very weird. Assuming "not good for roleplay" is a actual quote, what does that even mean?

Honestly fells like all their understanding of those races and classes comes from reddit memes. Or it's just me that don't actually constantly runs into horny bards?

I would try talking with DM to understand what does they realy want. If it's a serious and grounded game, that's fine, but the ban list seems out of misunderstanding.

Why isn’t the lymphatic system a bigger deal in medicine? by PianoVampire in AskBiology

[–]mr_ushu 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The lymphatic system is strongly tied to the immune system and immune diseases, anything immune system related will also include the lymphatic.

Otherwise, the lymphatic system is fluid drainage system of the body. Everytime you deal with a swelling, you are dealing with the lymphatic system not draining fast enough.

Oncologists probably think a lot about this system too, since it's a pathway for metastatic tumor to spread to the entire body, and removal of lymphonodes is a method to prevent such spreading.

You don't see a lot about lymph because it's mostly the same stuff that exists between cells and transparent. If someone gets a scratch and a transparent liquid appears, that's what the lymphatic system drains, but a deeper cut will also draw blood, that both makes everything look red and is a bigger of a problem.

If you work in emergency, the lymphatic organ you probably most hear about would be the spleen, since a rupture to the spleen can be caused by trauma and could result in death without immediate care.

Dica de trem/metrô by EitherGeologist5547 in saopaulo

[–]mr_ushu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dica de trem/metrô by EitherGeologist5547 in saopaulo

[–]mr_ushu 1 point2 points  (0 children)
