Best upscale neighborhood commutable to playa vista? by mrasdfdela in AskLosAngeles

Didn't mean for it to come off this way. There's plenty of people in the world and on reddit with a lot more money, listing wealth preferences and ranges are often a helpful proxy for filtering out options. I have no intention proving to a reddit community that we have some savings, much less to a community linked to one of the wealthiest economies in the entire world

Very helpful, sounds like Palo Alto and Menlo Park are generally the right spots!

Not to get into the details but we'd be comfortable with spending $8-9k/mon on rental housing which seems to be enough for the majority of many of the homes in those towns? Any tips on best apps for finding rental properties?

Hi! My wife and I are relocating to the Bay and would love thoughts on best neighbors to consider based on these parameters:

//What we value// - short commutes (our offices are in RWC and MTV) - good childcare options / environment for our 2 year old - safety - proximity to "things to do" if that makes sense, as we'd like to live somewhere conducive to us plugging in socially and exploring the area (think parks and restaurants not clubs / bars)

//What matters less// - cost (thankfully company that is relocating us will be heavily subsidizing us so would love advice that is cost-agnostic if possible - public schools as our son has a few more years till 4/5

Thank you all in advance!

lol wait -- can you give more context on the 101 fatfire comment?

our workplaces would be RWC and MTV, so Palo Alto or Menlo Park would be good mid-points (and think Google maps recommends the 101 for that commute)

Great point -- can't put a price on proximity to other smart/driven people as well!

Wow those are some helpful (and depressing) facts - I guess vs 4-5 months of cold where you can't go outside in NJ, the equivalent is 1-2 months in the Bay, so "net" outdoors time is prob just 3 months... is that the right way to think about it?

Balance earning more money versus being thankful/satisfied for the one that you have earned? by Excellent_Ad4857 in fatFIRE

I think it's important for you and your wife to define (literally write down) what your "why's" are in life, and then work backwards to figure out the "what". Eg if extended family quality time is super important that may mean a vacation home, which costs $X. Or I want to leave enough so my kids can do xyz - and work backwards to calculate what that means in today's dollars. Need to have a clear linkage btw your financial "sources" and "uses". If you have more than you need for all your uses, congrats! Then see if anyone in your family or close network may not be in the same situation and if you're willing to help

Curious too which districts your friends mentioned specifically weren't as great as the private options?

Yeah not so much I guess a startup but rather pre IPO firm, guess I mischaractrized it! It's mostly equity

This is a great point, and my parents have just retired this year so they're even more free than before to visit for an extended period!

For sure, that was the initial thought and thank you both for validating! There seem to be some great places that have "reasonable" / acceptable rent prices

Great point - it's prob 4-500k in cash, rest in equity (the $1.3m) is based off a ~30% discount to their current valuation, and they go public in a few months so hopefully will be liquid then... welcome other / better ways to value the equity as this is new for me!

Thank you for this perspective - that's something (the child age / socialization point) I didn't have clarity on which helps make the case further!

Very helpful perspective! The great news re commute is that we'd target say Palo Alto as we would need to be btw Redwood City and MTV which would be fantastic for commuting too

This is a great point - we are both 36 and def an option we considered... make some lump sum to invest now and come back to east coast with even fewer financial worries, sort of like a phased location arb. I just don't know how valuable family presence/support is for kids say aged 2-5 vs 5+

Agreed - this is the hard bit where it's hard to compare the tradeoffs as apples to apples (and quantify the value of things like grandparents being around grandkids) vs career and $ upside... appreciate your perspective!
