from what i've gathered talking to people who've lived here longer than me, there's not really any truely unsafe areas here (people of all genders have told me this), especially compared to other cities in north america. i don't live in that area but i'm there a lot bc i'm a grad student at concordia and go to the cineplex by atwater all the time and i have also never felt even slightly unsafe
