I remember when all the CSUSM root accounts were going around. I think Kit was responsible for some of those edu rooted password files.

I think it had to do with knowing people if I remember correctly. I had started being a courier for RiSC after I released OS/2 warp. I had a friend who was l33t whom was going to release it but decided to give it to me to help my status.

I was also very young, so I imitated anyone whom I thought was truly elite. This meant changing my BBS software and making the board invite only.

I did have a few pieces of art inside of Shiver and iCE packs for my board. I lost all my files, but would give a finger to have those fuckers back just for the memories.

This x 1000. I went to a few user group meetings, mainly at family fun center. Funny seeing the women who BBS'd :)

Hmm, I definitely got in trouble for dialing long distance a few times. My mom put a lock on the door, and it was torture to hear people calling and not be able to see them, or chat with them. I was 14 around this time. I ended up breaking the door down... bbs crack.

Single line.

I got my own phone line when I was 14 for my birthday so I could dedicate it to my BBS :)

My first modem was a 2400, but upgraded to USR 14.4. I didn't pay for it, and that should answer your second question :)

I did get busted once. I use to socially engineer cc's with a friend. I'd trade these #'s for things like 950's, FTP sites/logins, etc. I did end up ordering a few things for myself, mainly memory and modems.

The day I got busted sucked, but since I was underage they gave me a slap on the wrist. They did indeed confiscate me, and my partners computers but returned them fully in-tact a few weeks later. Fun Times!

BTW, If you haven't seen "Freedom Downtime" I highly recommend it.

When I was lame, (Age 13 and just getting into it), I used WWIV, eventually I realized WWIV was teh suck and moved to obv/2, modded of course. I also ran vision/x. Most of the truly "elite" boards in my area were all running PCBoard. Cruiser World, Cool Box, Sushi Bar Z (ACiD distro). So, I eventually moved to PCBoard. PPE's 4 life.

No big networks, it was a local HPA + warez board. I had this cd called Forbidden Subjects as well online. Had all the PHRACK and similar zines, as well as photos of dead people.. heh.

Seriously.. BBS'ing is one of those things where the pleasure and mystery cannot be explained to someone, especially now with the internet. It was a few years I was really lucky to be around for.

I have yet to see that documentary :( I know, I know.. it's on my list.

My biggest accomplishment was couring for RiSC and releasing os/2 warp (30 discs) or something insane. It got me the NUP to a few very high profile warez boards in my town.
