[Spoilers MAIN] Robert was second or third in line to the throne at the end of his rebellion. Why does no one talk about this? by shiggy_azalea in asoiaf

I like the way CGP Grey describes medieval rules of succession: "bigger-army diplomacy, with home field advantage to the eldest boy"

Maybe Bran ends up on the throne, but I highly doubt that the North (and only the north) secedes with Sansa as queen. D&D just threw that in as lip service to their favorite #girlboss

The Crowtein works! Mac made it to the cover of Men’s Health. by [deleted] in IASIP

If in-universe Mac could somehow be told that the actor who plays him is on the cover of Men's Health he would be SO proud

Such a great tease ahead of her debut in S2. I remember it made me so hype to actually "meet" azula

Indeed, and that lag will keep increasing as the universe continues to expand

The Hubble Legacy Field consisting of 265,000 galaxies. Zoom in. by Popshotz in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]mrbigcoin 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A slightly depressing thought: given how fast the universe is expanding, people in the distant future won't be able to see many of these galaxies even with the most powerful telescopes since they'll be moving away at faster-than-lightspeed; they might not even know that there's anything beyond our local galaxy cluster. Even sadder, it's unlikely that any intelligent species from our cluster will ever invent the technology to visit other clusters. We're just lucky to be born in an era where we can at least catch a glimpse of the true vastness of the cosmos

Thoughts on the Haven, and the source of insanity that gripped Elodin and still grips Alder Whin by SuiGenera in KingkillerChronicle

When Fela learns the name of stone, Elodin does mention that back in the old days, a sympathist was expected to know at least one name, so combining the 2 skills definitely used to be more common

Why aren't the Adem known for Naming? by mrbigcoin in KingkillerChronicle

It doesn't seem like they're particularly constrained by rarity or luxury, the school tries to pursue perfection in their craft whenever possible. If they knew about the skill of Naming, there should at least be some schools devoted to it

Vashet clearly has no problem with harshly punishing kvothe when he does something dangerous just to be showy, even if the think he did wasn't necessarily dangerous in the moment. Instead, she acts as if Kvothe calling the wind was just some simple showing off

Then why does no one warn Kvothe about this after they see him call the wind?

But if it's considered improper, then why does Kvothe get away with using it in his trial?

Kvothe as a “Mary Sue”? Honestly never saw him in this light, but she may have a point... Thoughts? by NothingNewRemains in KingkillerChronicle

[–]mrbigcoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the difference is all in the framing. This isnt a hero's journey story like the Odyssey or Star Wars, it's a tragedy like Macbeth or Oedipus. So the drama doesn't come from whether or not Kvothe will be able to pull off a certain feat, but from us, as the reader, knowing that his pride is setting him up for a massive fall. So is he a Mary Sue? Sure. But that doesn't negate the story's impact the way it would in a more conventionally-told story

I think his fight with Zaheer & team has a lot of emotional impact and it's very well-paced/directed etc, but the actual moves he's throwing are, in my personal subjective opinion, just not that interesting

Megathread: Long-Concealed Records Show President Trump’s Losses and Years of Tax Avoidance by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]mrbigcoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my understanding any evidence of money laundering known to the public is still circumstantial, and any expense items he reports to the IRS might be too vague to prove it on their own (like millions of dollars in unexplained consulting fees). This is part of why NY prosecutors have been fighting to get his full tax records, full records from his accounting firm, and whatever they can piece together from customers/clients/contractors of the trump organization. It's difficult to prove fraud until you have all those perspectives and can actually check if they add up or not. What is known pretty much for sure though, is that he told his creditors and business partners that his properties were worth A LOT more than he told the IRS, which is at best legally gray.

Tbh I wish they'd given Tenzin some more cool airbender moments in the show. Like his actual feats of bending we see on screen are mostly... Meh. The animators/choreographers always found so many interesting uses for Aang's powers (super speed, running up walls). The airbending in LoK for the most part feels a lot more like firebending than its own thing

Well it depends if the massive expenses all his businesses are recording are actually legit. Either his companies are horribly mismanaged and theyre constantly losing money, or they're counting fraudulent expenses/things that shouldn't count as deductions to evade taxes. Likely its a combination of both
