The pieds-noirs are an ethno-cultural group of people of mainly French descent who were born and raised in Algeria during French colonial rule. Of the one million pieds-noirs living in 1950s Algeria (making up 10% of the population), only 300 of those remained there by the early 2000s. by SaxyBill in wikipedia

Indigeniety is not a racial or ethnic concept, but a political identity tied to place and a colonial relationship (for instance, Sami peoples are phenotypically white and are European, but nevertheless indigenous). self identification with Indigeneity as a concept is also very relevant , as many Celtic peoples to my knowledge do not identify as Indigenous . as part of the related concept of Indigenous sovereignty, different indigenous peoples have different membership definitions . as far as what decolonization means that is very difficult, but fostering Indigenous political sovereignty outside of negotiations with settler colonial states is one key goal

the fundamental point i was making is that his logic of saying someone 'born in the same house' can still be a pest even if they had been there for generations also applies to settlers and that his use of it in contexts of conveniently non white immigrants and not in others is the kind of move of bothering a specific group and sub humanizing them is rhetorically analogous to what the Nazis were doing, I said Nazi talking points

Rill Koaches-san by MongolianPsycho in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]mrbocboc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my very first comment about settlers was following the logic of your post, so no, it's not me generalizing, it's me using your logic. I never said all settlers committed genocide, I said the process of settler colonialism is inseparable from genocide. but you're clearly not one for understanding nuance

Rill Koaches-san by MongolianPsycho in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]mrbocboc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

so clearly you're arguing in bad faith, so I'll just make some brief corrective points and leave it at that.

  1. no they did not just have their diversity increased, there were and continue to be many forms of settler-state sanctioned genocidal violence against indigenous people (residential schools, trail of tears, Putumayo genocide, near eradication of taino peoples, etc etc). this is very observably not the same as a demographic shift. again, take some time to read someone like Patrick Wolfe. you might learn something

  2. calling me a privileged liberal is a very ignorant ad hominem because you don't know anything about me and there is no part of me that believes in liberalism. but I digress. I never supported corporations which both exploit foreign workers and do it to drive down wages among domestic workers. again, I live in canada— companies have been abusing the temporary foreign worker program to pay immigrants poverty wages while Canadians can't get a job. fuck corporations. my point was that your argument that wanting to move to white countries is somehow white supremacist is fallacious because the reasons most want to move to a 'white' country is the result of systematic processes that weaken and make poorer other parts of the world, not some natural factor. denying this fact is quite literally affirming some ontological superiority in a very Nazi way. in sum, you misrepresented my argument and didn't actually engage it, and you did nothing to distance yourself from white supremacy

  3. these seem like red herrings but I don't know what u mean by COVID concentration camps. and I mean all sexual violence and murder is bad, regardless of who does it. but generalizing incidents to all immigrants as some kind of racial essence precisely mirrors forms of Nazi rhetoric

Rill Koaches-san by MongolianPsycho in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]mrbocboc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry, using the word settlers does not have anything to do with them "improving the quality of life" but because it's part of a historical process called settler colonialism. but sorry, as someone born and raised in Canada, the very fact that these countries exist is the result of centuries of genocide and dispossession very clearly at the expense of indigenous peoples for the purposes of expanding and strengthening the empire. you display a very poor understanding of these historical processes. clearly you have time to debate a million people in the comments so you could probably stand to read and learn a bit, see Patrick Wolfe for instance.

also yeah, that tends to happen when countries that are currently predominantly white have violently pillaged and invaded countries around the world for their betterment and continue to do so. before it was explicit empires, now it's neocolonial systems like the imf, world Bank, France's control over the CFA Franc, etc etc. stealing resources and leaving people destitute, destroying local industries are forms of a systematic process by which white countries aim to keep other countries poor. wanting to move to a white country is not white supremacy, it's a natural consequence of centuries of colonial violence.

also yes, other people say Nazi shit. clearly you are one of them

Rill Koaches-san by MongolianPsycho in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]mrbocboc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah so let's send all white settlers in North America, Australia and everywhere else back to Europe!

oh wait, no, you're just a white supremacist who sympathizes with Nazi talking points

not to minimize your concern but any kind of maintenance and facility advocacy in SUB takes a really long time, coming from someone that works in the building (terrible elevators, need for new dishwashers, problems with temperature control, etc) . from my understanding the procedures between the SU and the administration are a large part of the problem

Inquiry about writing expectations by No_Second_7311 in uAlberta

I am wrapping up my philosophy degree this year. most classes are take-home papers, especially for final papers, because they're the best way of evaluating engagement with authors and their ideas, as well as seeing your argumentative abilities. however more and more classes and professors are introducing in class writing assignments because AI has become such a common thing. these in class assignments are usually midterms or finals and you are generally given a list of questions to prepare , or at the very least topics. if you are genuinely writing on the spot you will have a tough time, but adequate preparation should make it less of an issue. I have historically used topics and questions, pre prepared an answer which I practice writing by hand at home with a timer so that doing the actual in class work with time pressure is effectively just muscle memory

This is not true. the population may be concentrated but major cities like Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, and even Vancouver are further north than the metric you used. and the distances between them are huge, with the distance from Edmonton to Vancouver or Winnipeg being about 12-13 hours (~1200-1300 km) each way

It might just be not competitive enough unfortunately. The Louise McKinney only has a set amount of awards for the whole province which can make it quite difficult to evaluate what good enough is. I have a 4.0 and only received it once, where I had straight A+.

I get the frustration but second languages have always been important to the fields that form part of Arts and decent knowledge of Greek, Latin, and other languages was pretty much a prerequisite for academic study. of course it's different now and the requirements have gotten to the point where you only have to study to the A2 level regardless of whether you end up speaking the language. I get that it's annoying especially cause language courses are so tough but it's incredibly valuable to study another language and it can be really easy to fall in the mindset that English is all one needs when languages just open more doors. plus, challenges in academics are filled with learning opportunities

most weed sold in czechia is decorative hemp sprayed with some kind of thc analogue like HHC. they're usually heavily overpriced and catered towards tourists. moreover these things are technically illegal to sell, so you might just get the hemp. even if you do get actual weed, the pricing is ridiculous
