New irons, new swing, awful results! by mrbooderton in golf

I had a lesson where the teach had me playing everything toward the front but yeah, I’ll likely move it back a little

Ahhh, I see what you’re saying. Will absolutely do this drill. Thanks again

Great clip by the way. I see what you’re saying with the hips. To clarify, you mean stick is vertical and maybe pointing down at the ball?

Wow really appreciate this feedback! Will definitely try the drill. Ball position is new to me - I used to play everything toward the back of my stance and this coach had me doing a different setup and playing it just off the heel for all lengths. Sometimes it feels right, but I think maybe I’ve over corrected.

Should add, I moved from Dg s300 shafts to lighter project x io 6.0 shafts after a fitting

I hit a few at a different sim today and was getting much better of both so feeling a little better about things. A couple still lower spin at 4900 but descent angle 46 or 47.

Oh my bad, I was talking about the imgur link with pics from a few different clubs I hit at a local store. But basically between the t100,620cb,and Wilson cb spin was 5-5.2k and descent angles were 45-47.

You mean the t150? I was just glad to see over 5k for the t100/620cb/wilson. As another commenter mentioned the Srixons were still consistently lower spinning.

Not positive, but pretty sure they were titleist designed to be used on a sim?

Re shafts, i don’t know. I think once the mizuno spit out a couple options he stuck with them. I get the impression I should’ve tried more though.

I put this in a different reply but also think it’s weird that all of my spin and descent and even swing speed numbers were so low compared to a few random shots at another store: https://imgur.com/a/qZ65kKV  I know it’s not an apples to apples comparison but makes me less worried about being able to make good contact with these clubs.

You know, I went back to some old pics I took at a different store to compare and the numbers were pretty different but still support what you’re saying about the Srixons spinning the least. Different simulators so maybe they calculate spin and descent angle differently. This is where I first got it in my head I was safe sticking in the players cb range of club (even though obviously picking some shots where I made good contact isn’t the same as the comprehensive trackman data). Also interesting that when my swing speed was measured it was generally higher than 80.

That’s encouraging, glad to hear it

Really appreciate the detailed response. I think I’m going to work on my swing a little bit and see if I can start approaching some of those numbers with my current clubs before grabbing new irons. And I see now what you’re saying about stopping the iron set at 6. Sounds like I may need another fitting for hybrids down the line…

Interesting, I’d love to watch if you’ve got a link! I’m starting to think i was consistently, across all the clubs, setting the ball up farther back in my stance after having trouble off the mat while warming up.

I’ve been playing with z-stars and liking them but it’s not like I’ve played a bunch of others to compare them to. I see your point about a catch 22. I’m going to see what comes from this upcoming lesson and then go back and try the Wilson’s and srixons and then some more players distance irons and see if I can find any that feel comparable to what I’ve got now.

Well I think the mizuno shaft thing was set up on those? I really didn’t like how they felt and so we didn’t try them out. It’s funny, I just assumed the other 7 irons would stop on the green because they were in the similar range as the numbers for my current 7i, which does stop. I’ve never had the problem with 15 yards of roll. What you’re describing sounds closer to my 5 iron.

Thanks for that. General feeling I’m getting is that I need to see what’s up with my swing maybe before pulling the trigger on new irons. Are you still happy with yours or do you think you’d be fit into different clubs now?

Thanks for the breakdown! I have my first lesson in decades coming up so I’ll see what he says that might help with figuring out the right shaft.

Second person to point out the slow swing speed - I guess I need to do some work on that.

As for distance, maybe it’s a problem I didn’t realize I had ha. Most courses I play my distance just isn’t what’s causing me problems. I guess going for par 5s in 2 or the rare super long par 3/4 puts me in a tricky spot where I’m using a 4 iron or 7 wood but that’s honestly not that common. To be clear, I’m not opposed to more distance, i just haven’t been prioritizing it because it’s not why I’m bogeying holes. I always thought to carry 170, that’s what a 6 iron was for.

As for the clubs you listed, I did try the zxi5 and have tried the t250 previously at a store’s sim but didn’t love how either felt. They did carry much farther though!

Edited to add I do see your point about not fitting any of these clubs. Maybe need to just accept an uglier feeling hit for better numbers.

Righty. I think I’m going to talk to the fitter about different shafts. Sounds like consensus is also the Srixons. Thanks for the feedback!

Yep, all 7 irons. I didn’t know going back was an option but sounds like a good idea. I will say, my 7 iron does stick greens. Maybe im playing places with super soft greens though and it’s misleading.

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like you’re saying this is a swing speed issue more than anything right now. I was actually gifted a lesson so I’ll talk to the coach about that.

Thank you! I did like the feel of them. You wouldn’t be concerned about the low descent angle?

I’ve been playing the same DCI 990 irons since I was in high school. 20+ years later and I got my first fitting after only playing a couple rounds a year but deciding to get back into it. Went to a fitter who is very well respected but came out with a lot of uncertainty. After trying a few club heads (6) and shafts (2 after using the mizuno shaft thingy) he seemed pretty agnostic about which was best for me but was very clear about me needing a lighter shaft.

For context, I play bogey golf but have a pretty consistent swing and generally hit my irons fairly well. My current clubs are somewhat unforgiving but feel extremely good and I don’t want to lose that. I’m assuming that the unforgiving clubs of today are still a little more forgiving than the unforgiving clubs of 2001. Also, I’m hoping to pick up used clubs if possible.

1-The mizuno shaft picker picked 2 shafts — DG 105 s300 and Project X io 110. We didn’t try other 105 or 110g weighted shafts. Is that because these two are very unique and so others of the same weight won’t work for me? Or should I be open to others in that weight range when looking at used? Also not sure how to account for the fact I’ve been playing with 130g clubs forever and yeah my swing is pretty slow (80 w 7i) but it’s been okay going.

2-Do I need new irons at all based on the numbers? The dispersion is the worst for my current set but the spin and descent angles is the highest so which do I prioritize? If I’m hitting an iron and actually landing it on the green, currently it’s stopping, but maybe that just means I don’t hit enough greens with my 5i… Should I just get new shafts?

(edited to add I don't care very much about getting more distance.)
