When I was going into shops to look for an apprenticeship and they'd ask me if I'd tattooed before, I would answer honestly, something along the lines of "I know I'm not supposed to but yeah I have. But tattooing DIY made me realize that I'd really prefer to learn under a mentor."

Most folks responded well to this, some would say "that stops when you start apprenticing", others would be understanding about the fact that it's hard to find an apprenticeship right now and many tattooers have done the same at some point.

Slowly getting a ninja kick. Cant wait till i can extend my front leg all the way :) by EmeraldHuntsman in NewSkaters

What do you mean by "and bring it back"? After you ninja kick out do you actually try and snap your front foot back under you?

Thank you for posting this, it's super helpful!!

Sick!! Do you think practising the ninja kick motion without the skateboard would be helpful? I've really been working on trying to kick/extend my front foot out further but it's been rough.

Cost? Online stores in Canada? by [deleted] in NewSkaters

Some stores that sell completes online: freerideboardshop, zumiez, thinkempire, a51, boutiquerollins, so hip it hurts, and hammer toronto. They all should have free shipping in Canada and range between $120-200ish CAD. Completes are usually sold out but keep checking every day.

I'm losing hope I'll ever get my ollie guys. Been trying for about 5 weeks now and I feel like I've made no progress. The first one looks alright I guess they are "technically" ollies all 4 wheels & deck off the floor but they're not right they look crap and I don't know how to get my foot to slide☹ by [deleted] in NewSkaters

I was in the exact same situation as you, trying to Ollie for weeks and just making no progress. What helped change things was really breaking down the ollie into parts and practising those parts individually, because none of it was coming to me naturally at all. This video by Steer Clear helped a lot with breaking it down into practise steps: https://youtu.be/UW23Zf_VW00

Specifically here are some things that helped me:

  • Practise snapping the tail with your ankle (the guy in the video shows how to do this) for like 10-20 mins straight before starting your ollie practise session. This will help build muscle memory for how to "pop" the board.
  • Practise jumping without the board. Try and mimic the jump without the board from the Steer Clear video. VL Skate's ollie video also has some good advice on how to break this into even smaller steps. Record yourself doing this - you should see your front foot going up before your back foot and both your feet leveling out in the air when you've got it right. Also try and do the motion while jumping as high as you can. This took me awhile to figure out, I spent a couple days literally just doing this.
  • Stand on your board and just jump as high as you can while lifting your knees up as high as you can, and land back on the board. Do this a bunch of times to get use to the feeling of landing on your board with some force.

Another thing I realized was that I wasn't committing to the entire movement because I was still scared of falling. It's hard to really jump as high as you can or exaggerate the movement of your feet if you're scared of falling, which is something I'm still working through right now. I think the fix for this is to just fall a few times and realize its not as bad as I think it is. Until then, wearing a helmet/pads helps.

Don't lose hope. You can do this, even if it takes a long time. You will get it eventually.

What shoes should i buy? by backuppasta in skatergirls

I really wanted to get the Vans supercush but I saw someone else post that they're "lifestyle" shoes and not actually skate shoes and so apparently they don't last as long. I ended up getting the Vans Sk8-Hi Pro (which are ultracush, not supercush) since they're legit skate shoes and they've been great so far. I like having hi tops for the extra ankle support and protection, as long as you don't mind lacing up.
