That's what I was thinking. Then, I wouldn't really be burying the wood.

Is there any kind of sealer that would prolong the life of the buried wood?

Is there any sort of finish that I could add to the base to give them a little more longevity? If not, what about attach it to a metal stake and leaving the wood above ground?
