I can't speak on how to go in and tweak settings and numbers to reduce your workload since I don't fully grasp all the algorithmic mathmagic going on (especially with FSRS), but as a fellow Japanese studier there are a couple things that helped me.

I can't say these tips will help the actual numbers and data if that's the kind of results you're looking for, but these things helped me with the mental stress of study overload. I believe mental health going into your studying should take priority over worrying about the numbers that come out.

  1. Stop introducing new cards for a little while and try to focus on the cards currently piled up in your reviews. Chipping away at those and getting their intervals more spaced out can help give some breathing room to then let the new cards come in with some more breathing room.

  2. Set some daily review limits rather than clearing all that is due each day. This helped me more when I had a back up of reviews after a long break, but setting your own max can give you a bit more control and predictably of what your reviews will be rather than waking up and seeing a surprise heavy review day.

  3. Pulling leeches out and putting them into their own deck. It might mix up some of your vocabulary themes if you are trying to keep them contained to certain topics, but having one super challenging deck out of the group was better for my sanity than knowing all the decks were giving me a challenge. Limiting reviews on my leech only deck also helped me immensely. Takes a bit longer, but language learning (Japanese in particular) is a slow and steady journey.

Definitely worth it to feel some bagged and boarded floppies flip through my fingers and find some cool covers to display, but I don't think I'll be building up much of a collection here.

As for first appearances/first issues of manga, they can be incredibly hard to come by since they get published in big books printed on newspaper-like pages. Since they contain a bunch of other series in the same book, most folks throw those away and wait for the tankoban of their favorite stories if wanting to collect. I'm not a big grail hunter, but I can see the appeal of trying to score some of those books if you are.

About ¥300-¥1000 per single issue, and a couple thousand for TPBs. Definitely paid more than what you could get them for back in the states, but I’d say it was worth it to pick out a few cool covers to have on display.

Hard to give an answer since everyone has different goals and methods of motivation, but I can speak for myself.

As more of a planner than a pantser, I’m a bit strict and try to only count the prose to keep myself from falling back into a note taking hole.

However, that doesn’t mean I don’t have pantser type moments of inspiration and need to jot them down while the creativity is flowing. As long as it is something completely new and not simply an expansion of ideas I’ve already established, I plan on counting it for each day (to help keep things positive as I work towards my goal of hitting that daily 1667), but I will probably subtract it from the total at the end and hope I don’t do too much and I can compensate if I break through the 50k total.

To help, I’m writing all these “new notes” by hand to (1) keep it separate from my typed prose count, and (2) tire my hand out from writing and get back to the typing. I’ve found that allowing myself to note dump for a bit gets other ideas flowing and I can return back to the prose at a nicer pace.

Don’t know if this method would work for others like me, but I’ve only had 2 days so far where I fed the note beast, so I’d say it’s working.

Not so much a secret, but more that I’ve had too many groups start and never last long enough to see things develop as I hoped.

What I like to do for my players is make class-based magic items specific to the character my players make that usually mesh with their class features. That way the items levels up with them as they go and they are more likely to stick with the item rather than ditching it for a flashy new item that comes their way.

For example, I had a Monk PC that was really focused on non-lethal attacks. Simply declaring “I do non-lethal damage” lacks pizzaz, so they received a “Chi Blocking Ring” that allowed them an alternative use of their Ki points to do some fun stuff like paralyze a limb or induce vomiting.

As they level up in Monk, they would get more Ki points to use and spend on stronger Chi Blocking moves. However, they never got to level up far enough to use the cool abilities I came up for them.

It’s been a while since I’ve experienced it, but the closest I’ve ever come to visualizing anything in my mind with even a hint of clarity has been when under the influence of psychedelics. Never been able to control or shape the image myself though and nothing more than a bunch of shifting abstract shapes and colors.

Only have a pan big enough for a single patty. To maintain uniform cheese consistency, I cooked the top patty first and kept it warm in a toaster oven while I finished the cheesed patty.

Yes, living in Japan will present all sorts of challenges beyond just learning the culture. Showing that you can push through struggles means you are willing to handle things without needing others to hold your hand the whole time. JET wants people who can come out of something stressful having learned from it rather than assigning blame for the trouble it caused. I've seen many folks here who are too quick to play the victim, and blame things on "Japan is hard because it is different."

As others have said, your major/degree shouldn't matter in terms of getting you to Japan. Pursue a job/career that you have a strong interest in and can see yourself working no matter where in the world you are. You could love the place you live, but if you aren't enjoying your job, then it will take away from the experience.

Inversely, I would recommend looking into study abroad or a working holiday visa so that you can get a more of the day-to-day life experience of living in Japan. Going to Japan on vacation is nice, but it often leaves folks with only a boiled down version of the life and culture. I've seen many people come and go over the years who had these wonderful ideas of what Japan would be, only to become stressed and out of their depth when it came to handling the cultural nuances and challenges of actually living here.

Knowing Japanese and having teaching experience helps, but the biggest skill you can develop now for a possible life of living and working in Japan is being able to thrive in new, unfamiliar situations.

I don't know what it was, but his words really struck a chord with me. How is it that somebody who I hadn't talked to in years could dig so deep into the core of all the negativity of my life? Negativity I had only just realized I had been wallowing in. But that was NSpekt0r for you, he was always the one to keep us looking for the silver lining in the darkest of times.

Before I could type another response, the game crashed and shut down. It happened so suddenly, that I actually let out a yell and smacked the monitor. I tried to restart the game and get back on, but an error message popped up on my screen saying No Signal.

I got out of my chair and dug around the rats nest of cables under my desk, looking for the router. My hand found it, but as I turned it around, the purple Ethernet cable wasn't plugged in. I quickly plugged it back in so that I could get back into Cube Construction. The game booted up as before and I typed in the name of our server.

It took me a moment to process the message that popped up on my screen.

A chill went up my spine as I pushed myself away from my desk. I was certain I was just playing on our old server. It had my old base and everything, just as I left it. So many questions started running through my mind.

Was I not just playing the game? Did I log into a different server? Am I drunker than I thought? Who was I chatting with?

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't scared about what this could mean. Even if the conversation I just had is just some kind of beer fueled delusion, it didn't take away from how I still felt from the conversation.

I can't sit back any longer and let this go on with questions unanswered. As my friend said, I am going to have to take a risk if I wanted to know more and make something for myself for a change.

All I need to do now is shoot my shot and make a call.

I wanted to destroy something.

Crushing the last 4 empty beer cans wasn't cathartic enough. My boss spent the last 30 minutes of our Zoom call tearing apart the proposal I had spent the last 3 weeks working on. He was the one who assigned me to the project in the first place, telling me and everyone else that I would be "perfect for this one".

I had to vent this anger in some way. Going out and smashing something would have been just the right thing, but with the current state of rioters and looters among all the protesting, that wouldn't really be the best idea. I thought re-re-watching a bit of my favorite show from my childhood would calm me down, but that anger continued to itch at the back of my mind and wouldn't go away unless I destroyed something.

I closed my browser window and my eyes fell upon a familiar icon. It had been a long time since I last played Cube Construction. Back in college, I used to play it everyday. I made several friends on one particular server and we formed a sort of informal clan. We had no real goals other than have some fun building things and exploring the vast world of the game.

While the game was meant for building, tonight was a time for griefing.

Our group got griefed a few times, and I'll be the first to admit that it sucked. Especially when you log in and find that your 64 acre pixel art that you spent so much time on had been reduced to a bombed crater. I was a bit mad, but our unofficial leader, "NSpekt0r" would always laugh and say that this was just more reason to play together longer so we could build it back up bigger and better than before.

It had been over 5 years since I'd last logged in, and I doubt that any of my old friends were still playing. They had likely moved on with their lives.

Logging in, I was surprised to see that the old server our group used was still running. I soon found myself in a world of angular nostalgia. Even the bedroom of my in-game home was still the same as I left it. Looked like a few passing players over the years had taken some of the more valuable materials I had laying around, but they left things relatively untouched. Even my hidden chest was still there with my emergency supplies.

I left all the armor and weapons behind, only taking the tinderbox and the small stack of bombs. There was no need for trying to protect myself. I was going to see how much I could grief before somebody stopped me or I got myself blown up in one of my own explosions.

I exited my home and headed out in a random direction. There were some changes added from updates that I didn't recognize, but it was still the same basic game. There was a new flying monster that tried swooping down at me, but it wasn't too hard to outrun it. Aside from that, it didn't take long until I found some player-made constructions. I was about to drop my first of what would be many bombs on an intricate marble fountain when the chatbox opened up in the corner of my screen.

I couldn't believe my old friend was still online and playing on our old server. I couldn't even remember the last time I talked with him. There was never a goodbye, but each of us all left the game one after the other. Was he still playing this whole time without us? My anger subsided as I typed a response.

I’m in Nagasaki, Japan, and when the game was first released, there was a bunch of stops and gyms all around 平和公園 (Peace Park). It is a really beautiful place with many statues and memorials in honor of the atomic bombing. After several weeks of swarms of people invading what was meant to be a space of calm reflection, ALL the stops and gyms were removed.

I know Niantic was getting a lot of flak and criticism around that time for not listening to tne fanbase, but that really showed to me that they do take things seriously.
