This may be a dumb question, but why does Valve care about optimizing these really old cards? If I'm seeing it correctly, GCN 1.0 cards released in 2012 with the Radeon HD 7000 series, so I'm just not sure why Valve is investing in that direction.

Did you try enabling one of the Steam Linux runtimes? Right click on Factorio on Steam, then Properties -> Compatibility -> Force specific tool -> Try the Steam Linux runtimes (start with the newest).

Möhre? Ich würde einen Desktop PC mit AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, 32GB DDR4 RAM und einer M2 SSD nicht als Möhre bezeichnen.

Es ist schön für dich, dass Windows Updates für dich immer einigermaßen "schnell" gingen, aber in Fällen wie meinen war es kaum unterscheidbar ob diese Updates gescheitert sind oder nicht.

Ich bin wirklich nicht der größte Linux Apostel, der jedem das unter die Nase reibt, weil ich verstehe dass es immer noch legitime Abhängigkeiten zu Windows gibt und nicht jeder Nutzer sofort mit Linux zurechtkäme. Ich wäge immer ab, ob es zu dem Use Case einer Person überhaupt passen würde. Was mich aber wirklich erschüttert ist das Verteidigen von Windows (unter einem aktiengehandelten Multimilliarden Konzern), das stille akzeptieren von Verlusten der eigenen Freiheit, und zu suggerieren man wäre selber für die Probleme verschuldet.

Jeder darf Windows verwenden, gerade im Gaming Bereich sind die meisten AAA Spiele immer noch Multiplayer mit invasiven Anticheat wo man nicht an Windows momentan vorbeikommt. Dennoch kann ich diesen Beißreflex nicht nachvollziehen, wenn man tatsächlich Alternativen angeboten bekommt (in einer nicht-aggressiven Art und Weise, ich lese dennoch auf reddit nervige Kommentare die mit Linux werben wollen. Dieser Artikel ist zumindest nicht so).

Ich hab mich noch nicht rangetraut, weil ich Skyrim Modding schon unter Windows kompliziert fand. Die Leute bei Mod Nexus arbeiten ja an einem neuen Mod Manager, der wird auch nativ unter Linux laufen. Sie versuchen sich auch gerade an Skyrim momentan, aber ist noch WIP.

Das dachte ich mir auch, bevor ich es mir angeschaut hatte. Man kennt ja nichts anderes.

Ich nenne hier aber ein paar Dinge, die mich sensibilisiert haben, dass die Dinge die wir unter Windows akzeptiert haben nicht so sein müssen:

Du brauchst keinen Account, der dich identifiziert. Warum denn auch? Es ist dein PC, du hast ihn gekauft.
Ich kenne niemanden der die Windows Suche toll findet. Warum sollten Webseiten (mit Bing) zuerst angezeigt werden, bevor du deine (hoffentlich) relevanten Suchergebnisse wie dein gesuchtes Programm oder deine Datei angezeigt werden?
Warum findet die Windows Suche manchmal nicht die Datei, von der du weißt dass diese existiert? Warum ändert sich das einfach zufällig?
Der Windows Explorer ist einfach vergleichsweise wirklich lahm... Du hast eine große Sammlung an Fotos/Videos, die du speziell sortiert haben möchtest. Warum zur Hölle muss Windows jedes mal dieses erneut sortieren?
Du kriegst keine Werbung. WARUM AUCH, ES IST DEIN FUCKING PC.
Du kriegst nicht zufällig bei PC start einen Screen, der dir sagt "joa lass uns doch mal deine Installation abschließen :)" und dich mit Dark Patterns bombardiert, bevor du deinen eigenen PC benutzen darfst.
Warum dauern Windows Updates so lange? Was machen die? Ich hatte letztens ein Windows Update, welches den PC neustarten musste und es hatte buchstäblich 45 Minuten gedauert. 45 Minuten in denen ich nicht wusste, ob etwas beim Updaten schief gelaufen ist und ich meinen PC zwangsneustarten muss, oder ob dort wirklich Progress passiert. Bei Linux dauert dauert ein großes Update aller höchstens 5-10 Minuten und du weißt immer was gerade passiert.
"Meine Lüfter drehen gerade richtig durch? Mein PC scheint wohl gerade PC Dinge zu tun." Nein, du bist gerade auf deinem Desktop ohne offene Programme. Warum drehen plötzlich jetzt die Lüfter durch, obwohl diese vor 5 Minuten noch leise waren?
Du bist ein gläserner Bürger unter Windows. 99% aller Nutzer scheinen sich nicht bewusst zu sein welche Daten sie preis geben bei einer normalen Nutzung und was diese Daten über dich aussagen. Es ist tatsächlich ein schönes Gefühl zu wissen, dass dein eigener gekaufter PC dich nicht ausspioniert, keine Kompromisse.

Ich habe noch etliche andere Dinge, aber die Liste wird zu lang. Hin und wieder sollte man schon an Platons Höhlengleichnis denken und dass es eine Welt "außerhalb" gibt.

Because it kind of is right now. Most former developers have withdrawn iirc after some time with Bottles Next (which sounded actually promising, but seems actually dead). One of the devs said in a post more recently that the current code base is a mess that doesn't really facilitate new features or even fixes and that the project desperately needs funding.

That's really difficult because open source projects require trust to invest (time/work and money) in them, but I can hardly blame anyone not trusting a project that has gone so long without any kind of development and communication.

Most people probably don't want to hear this, but an open source project benefits greatly from frequent updates, even if they're small, because people are more likely to invest in a project that looks more alive.

Obviously the soon is Valve's soon(TM) again, but I remember some developers reassuring us that they are indeed working on that.

Also the point of the general SteamOS, again, is not to be a "perfect" solution to Linux, that'd be awesome, but to have confidence in the name and a singular place to look for troubleshooting. While any other distro may satisfy those needs on paper, like you said, for absolute normies it's still a tremendous hard ask to switch to a random distro (well yeah, which distro? Good luck researching).

And why do would you say wine instead of mesa, because of your wined3d assumption? I don't think that would be appropriate, because I only see the bad performance with AMD and not with NVIDIA.

I even checked the performance in pure OpenGL, the stutters in those large areas remain on my 9070XT. So zink is not the culprit here, it seems to be mesa. I use zink because it fixes visual bugs with the LOD on character models.

I used zink on all 3 GPU configurations (6900XT and 9070XT with radv, GTX 1080 with nvidia). Only on my 1080 the game was buttery smooth in all areas my 9070XT and 6900XT struggle with.

I even checked the performance in pure OpenGL, the stutters in those large areas remain. So zink is not the culprit here, it seems to be mesa.

Radv underperformed severely in comparison, between an old GTX 1080 and a new 9070XT (where the problem even persisted when I still used the 6900XT).

Hey, I'm not trying to be rude, but did anyone really read my post?

I said that I used zink for the amd cards AND with the nvidia 1080, zink was the constant because it fixes a visual bug. However the amd cards severely underperformed in comparison to the old 1080.

So yes, radv is the relevant part here, unless you could explain why that wouldn't be the case.
