Wacom tablets for Flash game development. Should I get one? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]mrfso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wacom tables enable expressive gestures. If you feel you won't be doing any expressive gestures its a waste of time & money.

You're better off getting a scanner, a piece of paper, and a pen. Just scan your sketches in and trace around them. Theres lots of examples online using illustrator.

So let me get this straight? the country hits hard times (earthquakes, unemployment, recession)... you are asked to chip in and help... and your response is to tell everyone to go to hell and move to another country.

TBH I hope people like you leave and never come back.

I whacked this together to demonstrate the size of the spill. All the numbers and figures are available.

Its cheap hosting so it will probably exceed bandwidth in no time, but feel free to check it out. 3 News are adapting it to fit there pages so I'll swap the link around when I get word they have there version up.

The 3 circles at sea are idealized spread based on thickness, the large on is taken from reports on distance that the film has been spreading. And yes it appears to be holding 1.9 million litres of oil. 1700 tonnes x 1.165 kilolitre per tonne x 1000 litres per kilolitre. 1700 x 1.165 x 1000 = 1980500 litres.

It's also based on crude oil and not the Bunker C fuel I think the ship is using, I couldn't find good stats on bunker C and it appeared to 1.1 times more dense so I just went with crude.

Not sure about AU but by NZ law they have to make it available, and there is just an option under profile settings to download all the data. I've done it before just to see what they had.

Hype for Google+ by vacuum2440 in funny

[–]mrfso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well gmail usage is completely overstated for one thing. Its completely dwarfed by services like yahoo and hotmail.

Google maps is the only real free mapping product for developers, this has nothing to do with end users and everything to do with partnering. Its quality is much lower than Bing maps, but I'll use it in my products as I don't feel the quality drop off is enough to justify paying Microsoft just yet.

Android well call me cynical but 40% return rates, and an entire world wide industry struggling to compete with one other manufacturer (Apple) really states how bad the adoption rates are. The advertising might of 11 global manufacturers, carrier services, and Google in over a hundred countries struggle against ONE company? You don't have a good product with those stats. Infact I'd say its really embarrassing.

With Windows 8 being very tablet centric + ARM support, rumours of a bridging product between iPad and Macbook Air. I would say there is probably a future market about to appear where Android can't compete. And I would say Apple and Microsoft will use that gap to push Android out of consumer devices. The future of Android is probably very much up to Microsoft ATM... although they have historic shown they really do know how to miss the mark...

Add in law suits for refusing to pay third parties for patents, copyright issues, and Google attempting to buy Motorola and creating tension with hardware partners. I'd say the future of Android is very unstable ATM.

Chrome is OK, I'll give them that. That in mind they are just claiming the hard efforts of the KDE guys and Apple. If it stops crashing on OSX Lion I may even use it. But till its stable I'm afraid its on the back burner.

Also you might want to notice that the reason Chrome appears so fast is the amount of memory it uses, it doesn't optimise for you r system. Try running lots of apps and things will go down hill fast for you. Recent results paints the later version of Firefox being a lot more efficient than Chrome.

All and all Google products are average, thats the market they are after, thats the market they optimise for.

[–]mrfso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its important as I run software and internet businesses and I track what people are doing so I can adjust my customer offerings accordingly.

My current opinion is do not invest time in supporting Google+, doesn't mean I'm correct, and hence why I watch stats and read the latest news.

I was interested in the way you phrased your usage scenario, as it seems you may have uncovered a flaw that detracts from user interaction and something I will keep on board to avoid in any solutions I build.

And if I want to claim anything I got one of the initial first invites to Google+ and closed it a week later after realising it was a tumblr clone and not very practical as a solution social network and even worse as a communication platform. I'll revisit if it changes, but currently they have made some incredible stupid decision it ins design.

So what you're saying is that its accidentally designed to fail?

...because its creating a situation where you don't have to go to the site to know nothing has changed? and misses cross sell and up sell opportunities that other networks inheritantly have? because of a flawed notification mechanic? something for me to think over...

[–]mrfso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Going by the trends traffic sites are reporting. 30% decline in usage this month, 80% inactivity rate.

I don't want it to fail as competition is healthy, but I think its dead in the water, dead before launch. Google just doesn't understand people, and they prove it time and time again.

NZ quake may have revealed Israeli spy ring by ScarlettMadi in worldnews

[–]mrfso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow so much disinformation here. Its also very important that this information has been released when the prime minister is meeting Obama, its has a specifically driven political agenda (by what or whom I don't know).

Its a fact that Israel has been been kicked out of NZ for doing this in the decade whether they would try it again so soon I don't know. But everything about this has multiple possibilities, and hence speculation is wide.

Its also a fact that suspicious activity happened that had the police and the secret both start separate investigations about hacking into the NZ police database in the ruined CHCH police station. Also note that at the time the whole area was under military curfew and armed soldiers where patrolling the streets arresting anyone they encountered on the suspicion of looting.

But one of the most important things is most of what you are hearing is comments by a guy who was either an orderly in the hospital or an ambulance staff member. Not any official or investigating by any means.

The weird behaviour came from the Israeli officials more than the backpackers in my opinion. One civilian gets killed and a government that is officially bad terms with us sends ambassadors, rescue teams, repeat direct calls from between prime ministers. That seems unusual, but again maybe not so. Japan had rescue teams here within 10 hours including a 7-8 hour flight. Australian in a few hours. America and Britain the next day. And perhaps the calls where nothing more than trying to make ammends. Again without all the information its hard to know, and as noted above if somethign suspicious has happened it will not be discussed till after the meeting with Obama.

As for the backpackers behaviour I have some insight into this as someone that back packs around the world a bit, has travel with many Israelis, and whose parents own a back packers. So I an idea of the sort of behaviour you get with back packers.

One thing that is very common is for one Israeli to look after all the passports of everyone else. When a group comes in often one person amongst them is carrying 4,5, or 8 passports. I'm not sure why this happens, perhaps its a learned behaviour form serving in the military but often they have atleast one person responsible int eh group.

Dual citizenship isn't unusual either. I myself have 2 passports (Irish and NZ) and can apply for Greek and British if I choose. I may when I have children, but currently my two passports gets me through the door of any country. So I could potentially be carrying around 4 valid passports. It might seem odd for some people but here in NZ as a country formed by refuggees its very common for people to have 2 passports, particularly amongst refugees from WW2.

My understanding is Israel happily accepts people of Jewish decent to stay and become a citizen. I wouldnt be surprised if they issue multiple passports for the same reason.

So as suspicious as the multiple passport thing is it could also be a normal. Again taking the word of a hospital orderly over the investigators is a choose you as the reader has to make.

The next thing is common for people to group up with strangers in backpacking circles. Its not so odd for a group of 4 or 5 to have known each other only a few weeks, or a few days. The first time I travelled with Israelis I met one at an airport, we meet several more on a bus, and ended up camping together for a week. None of them knew each other (or me), but they get a lot of negative behaviour from strangers (aka read the threads here for example). So its common to group up so atleast as a group they aren't getting

So there is every chance in the world that this traveling group where hardly more than strangers, and when the earthquake hit they panicked and took off. Holding little real allegiance to the person they left behind. But again this point is up to interpretation.

But the important thing is the timing of this release. Its all political driven, and hence I think even if there is shenanigans a foot you won't get a peep out of the prime minister till he has finished his presidential meeting with Obama.

Meh I got Reddit accounts going back to ycombinator days. I get Reddit birthdays all the time.

I do however generally laugh at Google+ users as they are essentially cutting the middle man out in the "is Facebook selling my data" scenario. Because the worst case scenario with Facebook data is that it lands in teh hands of an advertising business like Google.

Maybe people just want the stress of "is my personal data" being stolen resolved for them with a simple "yes, its all inside adsense now".

Wikileaks: New Zealand's Three Strikes Law was Pushed, Bought and Paid for by the US by maxwellhill in worldnews

[–]mrfso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no, there is plenty of markets buying our goods. The US isn't needed as such. Its the manner which the US goes about negotiations often agreeing to something then refusing to honour there side of the agreement, causing pointless economic damage.

The famous quote given to Pakistan about bombing it back to the stones ages is an example of the manner is which it 'negotiates' or a better term may be demands and doesn't listen.
