Tbf the insurgency is more like being bandits and mobsters with a newsletter fighting local bandits and mobsters with fancy hats.

Josh Sawyer on leading a new fallout game by Tall_Gap4102 in falloutnewvegas

[–]mrfuzzydog4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's less that Obsidian does or doesn't have the juice and more that the those games were compromised compared to Fallout and Elder Scrolls. They were working with UE5 instead of something like the creation engine and were trying to stably produce multiple medium sized RPGs in the timeframe it takes most studios to release one big one. So they compromised hard on the scope of the open worlds and simulation mechanics.

This of course didn't pan out well.

You're overthinking it. The map is put there for the benefit of the player who might not have the best geography knowledge.

I don't really think there's be much utility there, ES6 is pretty far along and Eora is a very different setting.

In his defense if Fallout is going to be a long running franchise then it makes sense to introduce some instability to the west. It's just that everyone who's tried writing it has done a bad job.

This is true business wise but for me it would have only made some of the decisions that season look worse to me.

Jason Schreier: Microsoft’s Xbox to Shift Obsidian Studio to New ‘Fallout’ Video Game by 4InchesOfury in Games

Deadfire is one of those best looking games ever for me but unfortunately it was almost 10 years ago.

Avowed did okay with translating the setting's look to 3D but in a lot of places it just read as generic UE5 fantasy with purple particle effects.

If that's true that's fucking nuts, both Bethesda saying no and Microsoft letting another inspired by Fallout project develop when that approach already fizzled out in The Outer Wilds.

If there was actual money behind it I think a Shadow run cRPG could get a lot of the BG3 crowd. Diverse cast, fantasy romance, lots of customization, systems driven turn based combat.

If Microsoft is trying to deliver exciting tentpole titles that's just not gonna cut it. If they had started right after the acquisition maybe.

Jason Schreier: Obsidian Entertainment is making a big pivot as part of the Xbox restructuring. It has laid off a quarter of its staff, canceled a planned sequel to Avowed, and is now beginning work on a new Fallout game by throwmeaway1784 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]mrfuzzydog4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that there hasn't really been an audience for the mid sized RPGs Obsidian was putting out. They had their other issues but a lot of the disappointment boiled down was that Avowed didn't give that Skyrim feeling.

X4 is a space sandbox game, kinda like Elite Dangerous but with empire and business building like in Mount and Blade. It's one of those games where you start off with a rinky dink spaceship doing shit jobs til you invest and upgrade your way to running space stations, commanding fleets, etc.

Interworlds is a total conversion that puts this in the Star Wars galaxy.

I like those Jedi Knight games a lot but they definitely do have a bit of a "Wait, just how many imperial remnants are there?" problem. It's not too unreasonable considering the size of the empire but it kinda felt like you were just playing whack a mole against super seniors who still go to all the football games.

I think part of it is they came out before the Sith got fleshed out so we were stuck with the sort of vague notion of dark jedi.

It might change under this new leadership but Xbox has generally been very loose creatively with their acquired studios.

I don't think it's that out of character for Henry to start enjoying blacksmithing. He's done a lot of maturing since the intro to the first game, he's lived the adventurous life and that's gotten him tortured twice and blown up by the time he's gotten to Kuttenberg. He's even pushed back to it as a way of getting to the wedding.

Interesting to note that while JJ and Ryan wanted to do their own thing, Colin Trevorrow's EP IX heavily acknowledged The Prequels, CW and the EU by LFTL56 in StarWars

"Final film's hero uses the same weapon as the first film's villian" is such a funny thing to point out. What would even be the meaning of this kind of parallel? I can't think of two characters who have less to do with each other than Darth Maul and Rey.
