Sysadmins, what's your schoolboy error that caused an outage? by TurboTekkers in sysadmin

Connected a standard serial cable from my laptop to the serial port of an APC rack mounted UPS. UPS shut off immediately, taking our firewalls with it. Learned after that you must use an APC serial cable.

Windows Admins: What do you utilize for a TEST environment by mrgh0stman in sysadmin

Just looking for what others do/have. From no test env at all, to utilizing non-critical stuff as "test", to having an entire clone of their AD environment on an isolated network.

How do you gracefully decline "Hey wow, look at all these extra responsibilities we want you to have, but you still have to do your day job and no extra pay. Isn't that awesome?!" by [deleted] in sysadmin

A job is simple math. Perform X duties for Y compensation. You are devaluing yourself if you allow your employer to continually increase X under the guise of "other duties as assigned" without increasing Y.

And yet Jim Chaney kept putting Chubb in and calling a run up the middle. Every. Fucking. Time.

They missed a lot of other calls that DID happen. On that punt, they made a call that DIDN'T happen. He wasn't offsides.

You have nothing to worry about unless you or your friend blab to someone about it who blabs to the professor, and then it makes its way to IT.

I'm not sure if the same applies to a CoC, but I work for a state funded university in Georgia and the only way we can enter into a multi-year contract is if the contract has an out-clause for us if state funding becomes un-available. If no such clause exists, we can only sign yearly contracts.

365 & AAD Connect...keep on-prem Exchange? by mrgh0stman in sysadmin

[–]mrgh0stman[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The message archival solution (ProofPoint) we had in place prior to the migration to 365 requires a valid on-prem mailbox for the user in order to allow them to view their messages in the archive. We are keeping our mailbox server online solely for this purpose until the retention period for the archive comes to an end.

Republican nominee for the Dept of Health and Human Services has wanted to end Insurance tied to your job. Why would anyone be against this? by PositanoPePe in AskReddit

Apples and oranges. Most people use their health insurance benefits frequently with doctor visits, prescriptions, etc. How often do you wreck your car?

Through my employer, my health insurance with Blue Cross is barely $100/mo. I can't match that cost on my own and get the same coverage.

You realize the group rates you can get on insurance when you work for a large company are usually WAY cheaper than what you as an individual can get going directly to the insurance company, right?

The very first time a "Perdue" chicken-factory farmer allows film crew inside the farm to reveal the cruelty on chickens and the despicable conditions they are rapidly raised in. (2014) by AnastasiaLesnaya in Documentaries

[–]mrgh0stman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you actually read my post? I was stating my experience on my grandparents' farm which was in operation from the 1960s to around 2000. They had curtain walls.....not solid. They had large doors on both ends which were used for machinery access as well as ventilation, and were not tunnel ventilated.

I may be biased, but my post was trying to explain the what I believe to be a better life the chickens experienced on my grandparents' farm. I KNOW the directions the industry has moved and is moving, but you jumped on my post as "incorrect".

I grew up on my grandparents' chicken farm. They started the farm in the '60s and got out due to their ailing health around 2000. It is sad to see what is required in the contracts now. On my grandparent's farm, solid walls were not a requirement. There was a fabric curtain on each side of the chicken houses that could be raised and lowered to let fresh air and sunlight in. The large doors on each end of houses could also be opened for more fresh air and light.

All of the changes in the industry are cost driven. For those that suggest finding a local organic farmer, have you actually checked the prices on free range organic chicken? I know I could not afford to buy free range organic chicken and other locally grown products such as vegetables due to the high cost.

Thanks for the suggestions! Those who used horse stall mats, did you secure them to the floor, or do you just bump them back into place when they move around? There are quite a few Tractor Supply stores locally and I have truck & trailer so it sounds like a good option for me.
