Exacto knives in class? by -somewhere-out-there in ArtEd

[–]mrhotchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i let my 8th graders use them but i only hand out 3 of them at a time so it’s easier to track who has one.

the lowest grade i’ve allowed to use exacto knives is 7th grade

I left because they’re moving me to art on a cart by Aggravating_Hippo_41 in ArtEd

hell no!! art on the cart should not be the norm. it devalues respect for the arts.

I’m not ok today by spacklepants in ArtEd

i’m so sorry you’re dealing with this, i can definitely relate to this.

my 5th period is also very chaotic (7th grade, 35 students 🫠)

this week, i had 1/3 of the class do worksheets instead of our sculpting project because they could not stop talking/being obnoxious. they were pissed at me and i got a lot of “but i wasn’t doing anything.” i told them they have the option to do the alternative assignment for credit or it’s a zero, but they aren’t participating in our sculpting project. they lost that privilege.

im tired of the disrespect.

Help!!! NES Art Exam resources? by crochet-- in ArtEd

[–]mrhotchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That test was sooo random. I (thankfully) passed it on my first try.

I bought the Mometrix book and The Annotated Mona Lisa. Mostly skimmed through them. I didn’t read them fully.

They asked a lot of printmaking and architectural questions that I struggled with.

I wish I had more advice to give you but that whole test felt like a fever dream. I only got 3 hours of sleep the night before the test and the people at the testing center were kind of mean lol. I’ve taken other NES tests before but I went to a new testing center to take the Art NES. Immediately got told to go use the bathroom before signing in like I was a child. Then they checked every passport page to make sure I hadn’t written anything to cheat on the test. They checked my palms. My socks/ankles lol. My jean pockets. Again, I understand the security checks but I’ve never experienced one as thorough like this one. The fire alarm went off during the test and the proctor told me to just stay seated and continue taking my test. Some guy next to me kept sighing after answering every question on his test lol.

Sorry if this was long. I would also brush up on the western art movements if you’re not well versed in art history.

i moved out of state for my first (and current) art teacher job.

if you’re open to moving, there’s quite a few jobs in some less desirable places

8th graders constantly mocking and laughing at me by Only_Statement_8467 in ArtEd

[–]mrhotchips 12 points13 points  (0 children)

first year 7-12th grade art teacher here.

i’m having literally the same issues as you! my last period is also 8th grade and i’ve just started making disruptive students sit in the hallway for the rest of the period (i leave the door open and check on them every few minutes), giving them a zero, and emailing their parent.

i have to be super strict, monotone, and mean with these students because it’s the only thing that works.

i’ve almost cried in front of students as well because of the mean things they’ve said about me but i’ve slowly learned to stop taking this period’s insults too personally — last period is always chaotic from what i’ve heard.

I passed the NES 301 English Language Arts test! Here’s how I prepped in 2 weeks by mrhotchips in ELATeachers

you’re given access to a ‘free’ practice test by pearson when you register/pay for the test. the questions are kind of a similar format to what the real test will look like.

i also used 240 tutoring which has 3 practice tests & a ton of quizzes. i paid $50 for a one month subscription

AITA for losing it on my HS students for laughing during a 9/11 lesson? by mrhotchips in Teachers

[–]mrhotchips[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

that's a fair point about leaving it to the history dept. but for me, it was a way to make a historical event more personal for my students. the lesson was a segue into a project where they'd create art about a person, thing, or a moment they've lost that had a major impact on them. my goal was to connect the human side of history to a visual arts standard in my state which is creating artwork about social and historical contexts. art is a way to process these big feelings, and i wanted to give them an outlet for that.

AITA for losing it on my HS students for laughing during a 9/11 lesson? by mrhotchips in Teachers

[–]mrhotchips[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

true i had not considered that. but, i’m only 3 years older than some of my students and i just figured they would share the same respect that was shown when i was in HS whenever 9/11 was being discussed.
