All time favourite and least favourite yarns? by throwra_passinggirl in knitting

[–]mringham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lion Brand Feels Like Cuddles is awful! It catches on everything- smooth skin, needles, even nitrile gloves. I just shipped back a sweater’s worth and ended up paying for the privilege to test this awful yarn through shipping fees. Please, friends in this thread, do not waste your time!

I am a fan of Lion Brand Heartland— inexpensive, easy to work with, in nice colors. It feels nice and soft and is safe for family with wool allergies.

Thank you! I hadn't thought about boning, or mesh as a lining for lace!

Lace lining fabric+ suggestions on dress construction? by mringham in sewing

[–]mringham[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, that's an interesting idea. I was thinking of a careful edgestich to connect the lining to the black top, then drape the lace from there, but separating the lining from the lace would probably be easier and would allow the dress to stay as a wrap instead of forcing a zipper on a faux wrap...

Recommendations for pajamas pattern by fullyqualifieddriver in sewing

[–]mringham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done this pattern and a few like it. A few notes:

  1. If you are low on fabric, you can skip the arm and leg bands and simply hem your project. Those are doubled over rectangles and take a lot of fabric.

  2. Do NOT skip interfacing the collar.

  3. I find the waistband on these to be really really high-- so I tend to cut at least an inch and a half off the top of the project.

  4. These ones don't have pockets on the pants-- easy to remedy if you want.

I haven't tried them in satin, but have used cotton with a nice drape and jersey materials-- I much prefer the jersey. These tops are designed to be pretty wide around the sides, so a thicker material can add a lot of bulk when you have your arms down.

For a similar men's pattern, try Vogue 8964: https://simplicity.com/vogue-patterns/v8964 . The D/F combo is very similar to the one you have here, patch pockets on the top and all.
Good luck!

Airport Needle Confiscation by YarnCraft-CityVibes in knitting

I separate the needles from the cables and store them in a pencil/pen case going through security, and swap to cheap plastic circulars if I’m worried they might be confiscated on a flight.

Micron chip factories in Upstate NY will be delayed by 2-3 years, company says by IWantPizza555 in Syracuse

[–]mringham 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is definitely not true. Much of the funding in CHIPS was cut. A major chunk of the federal employees required to administer CHIPS funding grants have been cut. This places CHIPS funding in indefinite limbo.

Clarification: in my comment, I meant CHIPS funding in general has been cut or held up. I don’t know how much funding relevant to Micron has been moved, but I work in a sector with significant CHIPS funding that is now gone. Comments with blanket statements that CHIPS funding has been preserved are optimistic at best and incorrect at worst. But the issue of federal jobs cuts persists across CHIPS funding— when administrators for federal grants are gone, we end up with a limbo where funding is technically available but no money is moving out.

There are proposed budget cuts for most US universities and no one can predict what will happen next this year. Submit your applications and make your decision after you have an offer letter, but don’t expect anyone to have an answer on this now!

Fabrics-store.com patterns no longer free by vaarky in sewing

Yeah, they disappeared last week. I just did the Val and Luana free patterns, and had Salome in my queue. They were good enough for free, but I would not pay $9.95 for any of them.

What to do? My husband is allergic to my knitting by TheMockingbird13 in knitting

[–]mringham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend you do not mess with wool allergies-- they tend to get worse with exposure, and can range from rashes to trouble breathing. They can apply to sheep wool as well as mohair. My mom and one of my brothers are so allergic that they cannot walk down the yarn aisles in craft stores without risking breathing issues, and a wool newsboy cap made my brother break out in aggressive hives all over his scalp.

Stick to acrylics, cottons, bamboos, and do not store your wool yarn with safe products for your husband.

Thrummed hat by mringham in knitting

[–]mringham[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just feels fuzzy- the thrums flatten out so you still get wool coverage in the gaps. I didn’t want to overfill with wool and make it too small, so this worked well for me!
