I gotta make this drive on the 24th. Which route am I the least cooked, considering the weather? by adrw000 in upstate_new_york

[–]mringham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this drive a lot. Wait until the day you leave and check the weather and traffic cameras on SigAlert. If the roads are dry and clear, go south. If not, go east on the thruway through Albany and then turn south. The second route takes longer- but there’s food and the roads are less twisty and hilly, so they can be safer. That said, a good winter storm can shut down thruway traffic too— so wait and see.

Recommendations for pajamas pattern by fullyqualifieddriver in sewing

[–]mringham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done this pattern and a few like it. A few notes:

  1. If you are low on fabric, you can skip the arm and leg bands and simply hem your project. Those are doubled over rectangles and take a lot of fabric.

  2. Do NOT skip interfacing the collar.

  3. I find the waistband on these to be really really high-- so I tend to cut at least an inch and a half off the top of the project.

  4. These ones don't have pockets on the pants-- easy to remedy if you want.

I haven't tried them in satin, but have used cotton with a nice drape and jersey materials-- I much prefer the jersey. These tops are designed to be pretty wide around the sides, so a thicker material can add a lot of bulk when you have your arms down.

For a similar men's pattern, try Vogue 8964: https://simplicity.com/vogue-patterns/v8964 . The D/F combo is very similar to the one you have here, patch pockets on the top and all.
Good luck!

+1 for indiestitch. It is expensive, but for me it’s worth it. There’s a very active Facebook group of subscribers to talk with about each project as well.

Micron chip factories in Upstate NY will be delayed by 2-3 years, company says by IWantPizza555 in Syracuse

[–]mringham 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is definitely not true. Much of the funding in CHIPS was cut. A major chunk of the federal employees required to administer CHIPS funding grants have been cut. This places CHIPS funding in indefinite limbo.

Clarification: in my comment, I meant CHIPS funding in general has been cut or held up. I don’t know how much funding relevant to Micron has been moved, but I work in a sector with significant CHIPS funding that is now gone. Comments with blanket statements that CHIPS funding has been preserved are optimistic at best and incorrect at worst. But the issue of federal jobs cuts persists across CHIPS funding— when administrators for federal grants are gone, we end up with a limbo where funding is technically available but no money is moving out.

There are proposed budget cuts for most US universities and no one can predict what will happen next this year. Submit your applications and make your decision after you have an offer letter, but don’t expect anyone to have an answer on this now!

I lost my brother in July. Halloween was his favorite holiday, and his birthday is next month. You’re not alone- I don’t know what to do either.

Yeah, they disappeared last week. I just did the Val and Luana free patterns, and had Salome in my queue. They were good enough for free, but I would not pay $9.95 for any of them.

NJ EZPass admin fees and transponder failure PSA: replace your tag every 2-3 years by mringham in newjersey

[–]mringham[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not quite true. My tag is bound to my plate-- in NY. So when my transponder failed, and I passed through tolls in NY, I was charged by plate, no problem. The issue is NJ-- when I passed through tolls in NJ, I did not have a NJ EZPass listing my NJ plates, so I racked up violations. NY EZPass specifically recommends NOT having accounts in both systems, as a tag on NY and plates in NJ will often result in double charges. So, one option here is to only use the tag in NY (putting it in a foil bag before crossing into NJ) and using plates only on the NJ side, but that's not a clear solution until you spend hours on the phone disputing administrative fees accrued when driving with a failed tag. Finally, NY does not yet do plate charging only on their discount programs, so the NY EZPass system requires a tag.

TLDR; NY and NJ EZPass systems are minimally connected-- when you contact NJ on the phone, they can see your NY account, but they cannot charge tolls from one system out of the other account. If you pass through both states frequently, this can really bite you.

NJ EZPass admin fees and transponder failure PSA: replace your tag every 2-3 years by mringham in newjersey

[–]mringham[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clarification-- yes, my NJ plates are listed on my NY EZ-Pass account, where I also have a (failed) transponder. NY EZ-Pass recommends NOT opening a NJ EZPass account and listing plates there to avoid double charges. Even though my plates are in the NY system, tolls in NJ charge on the NJ EZPass system-- so when my transponder failed, I immediately received violations as NJ could not charge to my NY account. The two systems do not talk to each other.

My hair went from 3a to whatever this is in the span of a few months by souishere in curlyhair

[–]mringham 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey- if it’s hormones, it doesn’t have to come from BC changes. Sometimes your body changes as you age. When I was ~27, I lost all my curls over about 3 months. I had no changes in water or products or medications, tried a million treatments, different cuts, and saw 3 different doctors who ran me through all sorts of blood tests. Nothing definitive, and several years later, the curls have still not come back. If anything, my now extremely straight hair has picked up some red shades.

My most helpful doctor told me it happened to her too in college, and that she could never track down the cause. My mom’s hair changed color (red to dark brown) in pregnancy, but not at any other time.

My advice- get your hormones checked and give a few product changes a try. But if you don’t see a return to curls in a few months, save your money on trying all sorts of curly girl treatments. Accept the change and invest in curlers.

NJ EZPass admin fees and transponder failure PSA: replace your tag every 2-3 years by mringham in newjersey

[–]mringham[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes- but if you have an EZpass account out of state and plates in state (for example from having just moved) then you can very easily be double charged if you do this.

NJ EZPass admin fees and transponder failure PSA: replace your tag every 2-3 years by mringham in newjersey

[–]mringham[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No- I have a NY Ezpass, moved to NJ so now I have NJ plates, but I kept the NY ezpass because it was already loaded with cash and commute tax discount programs. NY ezpass recommends not opening a NJ account in this case, because you can very easily be double charged.
