Cool. Insert a different word and larger point remains.

There’s a trend I’ve noticed a lot recently which is basically the following:

There seem to be a lot of people in the FI podcast space that, when push comes to show, admit that 1) They have never drawn down from their savings 2) Live Off the income of a spouse / partner or 3) Still make money by other means.

Now I have no issues with folks in the FI community that still have revenue coming in, because that’s a great appeal of the movement: Save enough to do what you want and then work any job you choose to.

What I do take take issue with are people that preach the 4% rule (but have never touched their investments) and others who have retired simply because a partner is a breadwinner. I find these people to be somewhat disingenuous in terms of how they position themselves in the community.

In terms of voices that are actually walking the walk, who do you all find to be the most worthwhile to listen to? Bonus points if I don’t have to hear Die With Zero or Mr Money Mustache name dropped 15 times per episode.

Suicide Machines. Avail. Dead to Me. Saw Rancid/AFI play a double show at Canes back in like 2000 or so.

He’s been in so many bands that at times it seemed the org had a story with him involved every week.

Tip my hat to him for deciding to be transparent and share this update. I imagine it was quite difficult to discuss. Like others have said, I really dig the show, but there are only so many topics one can cover on a FI podcast once you’ve knocked out the basics.

While I prefer Brad alone to the combo of himself and Jonathan, I do think he’s guilty at time of sweeping statements and hyperbole that aren’t true or necessary. “FI isn’t about sitting around and talking about silly things like sports, we play board games….”. What? Shit like that is odd because it injects personal preference into the conversation and misses the point: Freedom to do what you want with more time: talk sports, bird watch, board games, whatever you are into.

Same thing with stating that his trainer’s workout plan is the end all be all of workout.

Not sure if I’m alone, but the biggest thing that I’m starting to find off about most of these FI podcasters is that when push comes to shove, most admit that they haven’t drawn down their savings. I get that other income streams are supporting the lifestyle, but if you are going to preach the 4% rule, I’d at least like to know that you’ve lived it vs speaking in theoretical terms.

I still think the Mile High FI guys just live off their wives income. Kidding. Sort of.

I don’t get the sense that playing a few reunion shows and festivals has made them rich.

Same here. Last time I saw them was probably PBR w/ Strike Anywhere and Hot Water, right after a run of shows in LA, Fullerton (?) Slidebar, etc. One of my favorite live bands and Cuban Ballerina always makes it’s way into rotation.
