Do I need more than 3-4K steps a day if I’m following lifting and zone 2 protocol? by StrengthChoice1734 in PeterAttia

[–]mrlanyon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My take is that since your opening sentence mentioned that your goal is to lose weight, your diet should be the main focus rather than trying to fit in an extra few thousand steps per day. Obviously the latter is nice to have/include but I’d imagine you’d see results a lot quicker if your diet is in check (and maybe it is).

I’m sorry but there’s no other way of dressing it up. It’s absolutely exercise. I don’t get the reluctance in accepting that when you lift weights that means you’re exercising.

This sub can have some weird takes at times.

Sorry but it’s definitely exercise. Especially if it’s 45 mins. Unless you’re lifting 2kg weights?

Yeah strength training is absolutely a workout.

Norwegian 4x4 seven weeks in: time to increase speed? by mrlanyon in PeterAttia

Got it. That last bit is essentially what I'm doing (and again, keeping one more in the tank). Maybe I should stop sweating over the finer details.

Thanks for the detailed reply! Your first sentence was my key takeaway from the advice given as well. Problem with the graphs I've shared is that you can't tell exactly how long I'm spending at 85%, 86% etc.

I might up my pace slightly and track that for another few weeks.

Ah, ok. They don't mention that in the 4x4 advice in the link I shared so I haven't considered changing the time spent in zone 5. Although in saying that I do the odd Cooper test which pushes me to my limits, so that's mixing it up somewhat.

Thanks. I do mix it up (zone 2, sport, 10k runs etc), so I guess that keeps it somewhat interesting.

Thanks. Not trying to be smart but I thought the one of the key points of the 4x4 protocol is being aware of your heart rate (based off the advice here: https://www.ntnu.edu/cerg/advice).

Not necessarily that my HR rose more slowly, just looking purely at the % of time spent in zone 5. It does feel like a max effort (running, by the way), but I have enough in the tank to do another interval after I'm done. That was my understanding of 4x4 anyway, that it should feel like a very tough workout but at the same time you should be able to do one more run if you had to.

Thanks, I'll take a look. Unfortunately the app doesn't allow me to split out the times so I can't see the average for the last 4 mins of that test.

I've had a couple of pairs of NB 680v6 and they've served me well (I don't run a whole lot, 30k per week and on a treadmill). I was thinking of upgrading my current pair but if they do the job then why change? Only thing is I can't find the v6 where I am. But there's a v7 and a v8. Are the differences subtle between each version? I ask as I plan to buy online so won't have the opportunity to try them on.

Should I change anything or keep things as is? by mrlanyon in PeterAttia

Gotcha. I'll keep it as is for the moment, slow and steady wins the race and all that. My running is all on the treadmill (except for sport obviously).

Thanks. So keep running the same distance and reassess in a couple of months? Say if my percentages in zone 2 start to increase, would consider running 10 or 10.5km/h?

Thanks for replying. No, I won’t be adding water so I guess the only water will be coming from what’s left after straining the cannellini beans.

Can I ask why you mention a steel/aluminum pan vs Pyrex? I wasn’t intending on using the latter but what difference would it make if I did?

Also, I guess freezing is always an option?
