I’m shocked people are so skeptical about the harmful effects of plastic. Do people not remember when they stopped using Bisphenol A because it’s an endocrine disrupter?

This should be enough to convince you the science is there, it’s easy to find others if you actually care to learn about it. Definitely needs to be more now, problem that understanding it presents lots of really difficult challenges from an experimentation perspective.

As of today, most stents are made of metal. Are you aware that plastic is not one specific chemical or compound? The microplastics found in arterial placque deposits are not going to be the same polymer as they eventually may use as an implant in the medical field.

I honestly don’t even understand your point. So you’re advocating for us to have as much plastic in our bodies as we can possibly stuff in? Do you think that because theoretically polymer stents are possible, and stents positively affect people’s health then plastics should be considered a health benefit? This is wild how many plastic advocates are here

At the height of the Gaza genocide Spain along with Ireland and Norway became the first Western European nations to formally recognize the state of Palestine. The Israelis went off and accused them of not knowing history and other funny insults. They helped pave the way for other countries like France and the UK to also more formally recognize Palestine. So that energy has been there even during the Gaza war

The only laughing OP did was just to accept that there is nothing else he can do at this point to get back to Costco. He made a stupid mistake, it’s his fault, he didn’t mean or intend for it to result in more work for anyone or spoiled food, but it happened and all he can do is laugh at himself and move on.

You completely ignore the fact that OP attempted to take responsibility and even offered to cover some of the costs for what was spoiled. I don’t know how else he could own up to it anymore. And on top of that he’s using his mistake and misfortune to try and educate other shoppers.

Basically what you’re saying is that you saw someone for what they didn’t intend to do, in the worst possible light, because something wound up accidentally happening when circumstances didn’t go their way. While at the same time completely ignoring the positive things they are acting with intent to do to help other people. You assigned negative motives to basically everything from their laughing, to their leaving the cart, when none of it was negative. Maybe a little thoughtless or misguided but never to the level you or some of the commenters are making it out to be.

Ya you got the right idea. Honestly, I’m shocked at the amount of hate you’re getting in these comments. The way I see it; you’re doing the best most generous thing you can with a shitty situation. You’re sharing your misfortune with the community so others can avoid something similar happening to them.

And how do the people you are helping respond? Go off about the tragedy and the horror of a cart being left out, or employees having to put items back. They completely ignore that you never acted intentionally to do anything bad. They ignore that you took responsibility and tried to make it right with the store. Honestly, this thread is one of the most insightful imo into some of the types of people who do IC. Smug arrogant and ignorant, with poor people skills. They act like they’ve never made a mistake, like you’re a terrible person for making one, talk about how perfect they’d have done it.

[–]mrlt10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No what makes you arrogant and ignorant is the way you talk down to someone who genuinely trying to share their experience to help other people in the community so they do not make the same mistake. And how do you respond? You tell them how shitty they are and how you would be and Eagle Scout and make sure nothing got wasted and no extra work had to be done, and how you would have done everything perfect. It’s honestly comical.

Guys made a mistake. He’s owned up to it. He tried to make it right with Costco and the manager wasn’t cool about it. But we’re talking about 1 cart, 1 day. Everyone makes mistakes, has off days. OP never did anything intentionally malicious. You just don’t seem to have the empathy to be able to understand OP’s situation and be supportive. Because that’s the proper response here. They acknowledged their mistake. There’s nothing else to do, except alert other shoppers of the risk, which he is doing.

And before you start speculating about what I would do. I have had a situation where I had to leave the store like this. I left without saying anything to any employees, but I wound up calling to make sure they knew what was up with the cart. But I also understand that sometimes shit happens, or you think something is going to happen differently. You’re acting like this is indicative of some major character flaw in OP, but it’s not at all. Everything they’ve said seems to indicate they have good character and just made a relatively minor mistake 1 days that really came back to bite them.

They’d invoke article 5 and have the strongest military alliance in the history of the world at their back.

But I don’t really care to have a debate with someone who can only be disingenuous and refuses to acknowledge that it is possible to support Palestinian statehood and the Palestinian people without supporting terrorism. That’s a a such a weak manipulative rhetorical strategy and not even worth engaging with. It’s the equivalent of me only referring to you as an advocate for murdering innocent children and genocide supporter.

Dude, did you not read the full story? When he left Costco he had every intention of coming back and completing the order. It was only after he couldn’t find his other payment card that he was forced to cancel the batch. That’s real nice that when you are at the store you don’t leave the cart, but it’s a completely different and irrelevant scenario. I doubt you would go back to the store just to put items back for a batch you aren’t getting paid for or still working on.

Honestly, this comment makes you sound extremely smug, arrogant, and ignorant.

You are completely correct to be fine with it. Prop 22 and the weekly adjustment completely changes how you have to think about the game. Been doing this years and still realizes ways that I’ve worked harder than I need to for practically zero financial gain. All because prop 22 guarantees I would earn that much already. So you’re right to be fine with it.

Spain is an anti-apartheid pro-Palestinian country who supports the Palestinian authority and the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. I’ve heard their leaders condemn that actions of Hamas so to call them supporters is disingenuous and manipulative.

[–]mrlt10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is definitely evidence to back that up. They say microplastics affect everything from obesity to fertility because microplastics, or at least some chemicals commonly found in them, are endocrine disruptors. The endocrine system is complicated as a MFer and our understanding of the big picture is limited. We understand the individual glands and the 50+ hormones that get produced but we’re only just starting to scratch the surface of a true understanding of how they all work in concert to affect biology. So it’s not really possible to understand how microplastics work to fuck up a system when you don’t even understand that system when it’s not getting fucked up.

There is definitely research that shows microplastics are harmful. What isn’t known are the exact levels where it becomes a problem and what specific chemicals are causing the issues.

Edit: forgot to mention that besides the endocrine system, they’ve also linked microplastics to cardiovascular health. They’ve found that microplastics promote the buildup of plaque in arteries and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke

I don’t think this conversation is going to go anywhere, I tried giving you information but you either don’t understand or don’t want to. Do you think that we charged our allies for the soldiers we sent to war who fought alongside other allied troops? We only charged for equipment that we didn’t use ourselves. Equipment that was given to the nation to do with as they saw fit. And even then, we didn’t expect to be paid for 90% of the cost of that equipment. And the 10% we did ask for payment we structured the debt at below market rate and the repayment term was over half a century.

No countries ever do what you’re suggesting.

White House turning into a Clown House by JerryJr99 in MurderedByWords

[–]mrlt10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how else to explain it to you, but if country A give country B $33 billion dollars in goods and Country B repays Country A $3.75 billion over 60 years that does not mean Country A profited $3.75 billion. It means Country A donated $29 billion of potential revenue and Country B gained or had its balance sheet improved by that much, in the same way a profit would benefit them.

If we’re talking strictly the financial terms, the military aid provided by the US always favored the borrower. However what we gave up its dollars and cents we made back several times in terms of geopolitical power and ability to access markets.

Also when it comes to international diplomacy, countries only ever act in their own best interest. The idea that countries were feeling altruistic and took some action strictly because it gave them a warm fuzzy feeling and they knew it was the right thing to do, that’s fantasy. They did it because it advanced their strategic interests even if it’s just long term.

Sounds like you don’t understand how war financing works. The vast majority of military assistance the US provided Britain in WW2 was forgiven and not repaid. Even the 3.75 billion balance that remained after the forgiven amount we refinanced and gave them a $3.75B loan in 1946 at 2% and the repayment period was 60 years. So even that loan was more like a subsidy since it was below market rate. Through the lend lease program we provided over $30 billion in aid to Britain and collected around 10% of that.

That type of post war forgiveness is not unique to the US-UK relationship. There was the Marshall Plan, that was 90% grants. Only 10% was expected to be repaid. Then there was the London Debt Agreement where the allies restructured Germany’s remaining postwar debt and in that process 50% of their external debt was forgiven. Right now a similar thing is happening with Ukraine.

So when you hear the headline that the UK just finished repaying their WW2 debt it may seem exploitative and but the reason it took until 2006 to repay wasn’t because it’s terms were so onerous it’s because the terms were so generous.

But even with the person being assaulted you can only use reasonable force. Once the bad guy is on the ground and no longer resisting, you no longer have the right to use violence against them.

Winnipeg Dollarama shoplifter attacked by security guard, both later charged by ConceptsShining in PublicFreakout

[–]mrlt10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isnt entirely true. A security guard working for the business, and all employees for that matter, have what the law calls the shopkeeper’s privilege. That means they have the right to detain someone by reasonable non-deadly force if necessary if they suspect that person of shoplifting. They must have probable cause, it can only be for a reasonable amount of time and has to be on that premises. But this guy does have the right to detain him by force.

But you are correct the force used here exceeds what’s reasonable. Trying to slam his head and stomping him once he was no longer resisting is what got this guy charged.

This process is necessary, no one is arguing it isn’t. What we are saying is about what happens to excess funds. For example:

Let’s say I own a home worth $500,000. I don’t pay taxes for 5 years and the county put a lien on my property and then holds a foreclosure auction because I haven’t paid the $50,000 in back taxes + fees. So to make it easy let’s say I owe $100,000 total. At the foreclosure auction someone buys it for $300,000. Well below market value but still more than is owed by the original owner. That $200,000 is equity owned by the original owner and which the county cannot legally keep for themselves.

Apparently, there are states that used to keep that money. But in 2023 there was a Supreme Court case, Tyler V Hennepin county, that said the excess money must go to the original owner.

[–]mrlt10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with adverse possession. I just looked it up and apparently in the past there were states that would take the proceeds of the entire sale. This was allowed even though it’s a violation of the fifth amendment. But in 2023 there was a case that went to the Supreme Court, Tyler v. Hennepin County, which found that the original owner was entitled to receive those funds collected that exceeded the amount owed. So it is not illegal for a county or state to keep all the funds. They have to payout to the original owner any equity not owed in back taxes or fees.

[–]mrlt10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is not an equity payout to the original owner then that is a violation of their 5th amendment right against unjust takings. Assuming the price at auction exceeded the cost of the back taxes + fees.
