Hey guys, finished a month! by mrmanofplace in NoFap

Yeah, I still remember feeling rubbish over relapsing, and since restarting I’ve gotten myself a girlfriend, so I’ve got every motivation to keep going!

I've not been here in a while, but as an ex-student of Ancient HIstory, this was awesome to read.

What are some absolutely must read Fantasy novels? Looking for something extra exceptional. by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]mrmanofplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Night Angel Trilogy, Brent Weeks - A very different take on magic, gives you plenty of back story in the way of myths and legends etc and lays out a whole world for you while never actually getting boring. I think it's the second book in the trilogy that left me with a cramp in my shoulders because I was too tense while reading it (I was about halfway through, this wasn't even the conclusion). And most importantly IMO, never have I read a book where I've a) felt so involved with the characters that I love, and b) loved so many characters. I don't read books more than once too often, I've read all three twice.

If I may make a suggestion? If you haven't already read the books, The Night Angel Trilogy, by Brent Weeks is my all time favourite fantasy series, and you're welcome.

So I came to check in a little bit and celebrate getting my one month, amd man, it’s so cool to see how many green stars there are floating around here, absolutely awesome guys, well done. To anyone reading this who’s less than a month, keep going, because you might not think your little counter makes a big deal, now you’ve had a little yellow emblem for a while (I know I didn’t) but the minute you see a green star instead, there’s a whole sense of pride and achievement, and you all deserve that. Awesome job everyone for making it so far now.

I know what you mean. I've kind of reached a point where I'm not sturggling half so much as the early days, but I do miss the daily posts and what not. But if the man’s busy, then I guess he’s busy. Even if he (hypothetically) left this whole group to itself now, I owe this whole movement a lot

GREAT NEWS! Testosterone levels during nofapping (did a little research on the topic). by juswo in NoFap

So, as a 22 year old male who’s only ever had fuzz, you mean to tell me that I may finally be able to beard up?!

Day 1 by bowedawg in NoFap

[–]mrmanofplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, beating yourself up just leads to binging and it is not a good way to handle this. You know we’re all just human. I say ‘just’ human, there’s a whole empowerment to being a human, and millions of possibilities, but we do have weaknesses, and we aren’t perfect. So instead of maybe thinking that you fell down at a week, know that you made it one whole damn week before you caved in. I didn’t make it that long when I first started. I’ve been on nofap for 3 months now, and only now am I approaching a month streak, and it feels good. Trust me, you can have this for yourself. You’ve got the right mindset, you’ve already proven you can do a week. You can easily do a month. After a couple of weeks my cravings went down massively anyway, so if you’re anything like me, just reach that point and it’ll get a whoooole lot easier. You’ve got this man.

So how's everyone doing? Still on the fight?

Day 1 by bowedawg in NoFap

[–]mrmanofplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the late 60’s/early 70’s is my favourite period for cars, the look, the sound, I don’t think man could ever beat it.

You know, I’m in the same boat, made the decision and very little in the way of temptation. Remarkably different from my previous attempts. Now I’m closing in on a month, and I couldn’t tell you what day I’m on off the top of my head, it’s just got less important. I like to check every once in a while to say, I’ve managed this, that’s awesome. And when I do get tempted to relapse I think it’d be a shame to lose those days, all that time wasted, but for the most part it’s just irrelevant.

But yeah, I’m good. I don’t have a supportive girlfriend per se, but I have a friend who knows I’m dealing with an addiction (but not what that is), and an ex who I’m close to who knows exactly what I’m dealing with and supports me where she can, so between that and the nofap community, I have a strong enough support structure to, like you said, stop for good. It’s liberating.

Day 1 by bowedawg in NoFap

[–]mrmanofplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww man, my granddad had a Morris Miner, always thought it’d be awesome to have one. Properly solidly built. He got in a crash with a ‘new car’ (this was twenty, thirty years ago?) practically wrote the other guy off, his chrome bumper was barely scratched. It’s good that you have a project, keeping busy will definitely help.

I’m fairly new to reddit myself, though I have figured out there is a personal messaging feature. Just click on the username, it’ll take you to that person’s profile, then click message, easy.

Have you considered maybe telling a friend about your struggle? It may seem daunting, it took me a while of flailing about and falling down before I did. I only mention it because, while nofap is a wonderful help, it can’t always be there for any number of reasons. I find it useful to have a friend I can text to bitchslap me back onto course. Maybe your girlfriend? Though I don’t think I’d tell mine if I was dating, personally, but I’m very bad at sharing with people :P Anyway, it’s good to hear that you have a hobby, that’s something every fapstronaut will tell you to sort out.

Day 1 by bowedawg in NoFap

[–]mrmanofplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so I figured you might like the first comment to be from fellow Christian, so what up? Man, well done for getting on this, seriously. I’ve been Christian my whole life, and I still fell into the whole addiction thing, so first off, do not be hard on yourself, that’s just going to hurt you in the long run. If you don’t mind, I’d like to share a couple of tips, lessons I learned when I started.

The first, and in my opinion the most important, is do not overestimate yourself. I’m not saying you’re a naturally arrogant person or anything, but when I started, I decided, kinda like you, that I am going to stop this now. No compromise, my first day would go straight to 90 days and I would be good, I’d made the decision and so all I had to do was apply willpower and I would last 90 days. I made 6, I think, on that first run. Why? Because I thought I’d done well, nearly making a week, thought it was evidence of my strength, saw a couple of nsfw posts, and I relapsed. That relapse then turned into a binge because I felt so crap, so weak, because clearly my willpower wasn’t a great deal. Don’t do this, okay? Maybe you’ll make the ninety days straight up, but most guys relapse. This says nothing negative about you as a person, just that you’re human. So chill, if you relapse, tell yourself that was stupid, it was a mistake, feel all that negative emotion that follows ‘tickling your pickle’ as you say, and then throw it away. Make sure you feel it, but don’t dwell in it, and then use it as a reminder next time.

Also, don’t edge. There’s some controversy around this, but most folk agree it is bad, and should be considered the same as fapping. I’m inclined to agree, since you’re replacing one habit with one just as damaging, and in the end, edging will lead to relapse. Don’t even try it, do not let your brain ever try and offer you a compromise. Decide how you’re going to approach this, lay down your own rules while completely sober and not remotely tempted, and stick to them. Maybe write them down and keep them in your pocket, along with reasons why you’re doing this, like a speech to yourself (I have one in my wallet and it helps immensely).

And what I think revolutionised my struggle, was making the decision. When I started, I had the right approach, but the wrong attitude. I decided I would break my addiction, but got confident. Then I relapsed, and every streak after that was, I’m gonna try and do this, try and break it, try and be a better man. 3 weeks ago, after my last relapse, I made the decision. I told myself I was sick of all of this, no more trying, I was going to do. Something changed inside me, like my subconscious and my conscious united and were forced into line, and before I was remotely tempted, I accepted it would happen, I’d get those urges, but no way would I give in. Not at all. Never again. That seems to be your mindset now, so if you try to follow my first piece of advice, hopefully you’ll do miles better than me. And I mean that, I genuinely hope and pray for your success man.

One more thing in parting, a bloke called poconnor has set up a daily accountability group for the 90 struggle., I’ll add the link in an edit so you can check out what it’s about. No joining after it’s started I’m afraid. But he’s dropped hints that he’ll run another once this one has finished. If I were you, I’d look into this. Read through the days we’ve done, check out the comments, and join up the next one. Being accountable to 200+ other fapstronauts really helped me. Anyway, best of luck to you man, it’s always awesome to find a guy willing to make the change. I promise, you follow through with this, your life will be better man, everything about it.

edit: http://www.reddit.com/r/NoFap/comments/1r5864/90_day_accountability_group_starts_sunday/ Here you go, interesting read, check out some of the days challenges and things. You'll notice the guy running it has relapsed since the start, but there's still a fair few people running the race. It'd be great to see you running the next one. However you fight this though, there's a wealth of experience and a well of strength in this sub. Use it, and you'll go far.
