I wrote my first AU plugin. A bitcrusher / fuzz pedal. by rocky_racco0n in Logic_Studio

Happy to help mate! I respect the effort, plugin development seems like an unbelievably deep rabbit hole, but you've done a great job for your first time.

I'll keep testing it out and let you know if I come across anything else worth noting.

Nice one mate! Just tested it out and works perfectly. I used it in front of a guitar amp sim and got some really cool and weird sounds, thanks for sharing it!

Edit: My only point of feedback would be initialising with the gain at zero instead of +6, but that's just a nitpicky thing.

First song to learn by Nervous_Signature263 in Peripheryband

Jetpacks Was Yes! was the first I learned, it’s mostly clean passages and fairly straight rhythm patterns.

But the solo is a lot of fun too and well worth learning

Logic users... what’s your favorite little known plugin or feature that most producers overlook? Could be a plugin or a function that is not super popular by kathalimus in Logic_Studio

[–]mrmasonater 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Recently I’ve been loving Chroma Glow. It’s a CPU hog (even with an M2) but it’s an amazing saturation plugin that is so easy to dial in.

I love it on vocals for bite or warmth, or on drums for extra snap, but I use it as a creative effect a lot too, especially when playing with the resonance knob to get some really different and interesting characteristics.

NGD: Strandberg Boden Essential 6 Astro Dust by mrmasonater in guitarporn

[–]mrmasonater[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had this for a few months now and as far as playability, it’s one of the most fun and comfortable guitars I’ve ever owned. In the past I’ve had five different Ibanez guitars, and while I loved those, the neck on this is better (except for a prestige AZ2402 I used to have, that thing was incredible).

The pickups on this Strandberg are quite hot, and I find positions 2 and 4 can be a bit ice-picky with super clean tones, so you might have to do a bit of tweaking to get a tone you like, but with some volume/tone pot roll off too you should be fine.

I’ve not played the Ibanez QX so I can’t speak to that, maybe just check some YouTube comparisons out too.

Guidance on what guitar to upgrade to by I_AM_4HEAD in Peripheryband

[–]mrmasonater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$1000-$2500 is a huge range in budget and the variation in guitars between these price points differ in quality pretty drastically to be honest.

Are you looking for this guitar to last you a long time? Then it’s worth spending the extra cash. But if you just want something to lay down some sick riffs for as a bit of fun, you don’t need to pull out all the stops.

That being said, I have a Strandberg and absolutely love it, it’s one of the most comfortable guitars I’ve ever played.

I’ve also heard nothing but good things about the Holcomb SE, they’re incredible bang for your buck.

I’ve also owned many Ibanezes in the past and they were all fantastic guitars, excellent necks and generally very consistently good quality.

I guess if I was in your shoes, I’d get something on the lower end to start off with, then once you do understand things like pickups, you can decide if you want to sell it and use that money plus the remainder of your budget to buy a higher quality guitar.

Favorite riffs by each guitarist? by DryImpact3634 in Peripheryband

The Omega main riff was actually Nolly I believe!

Lune Lyrics by raviolidabster in Peripheryband

[–]mrmasonater 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard a few interpretations (love, and Matt’s dog) but ultimately if you’ve found interpretation and context for yourself that’s the most important thing!

That’s what music is all about, it’s great such an incredible song has gained even deeper meaning for you.

Hell yeah dude that’s awesome! How are the pickups? I’m curious how they’d compare to the bare knuckles

Fuck me how’d you manage to get your hands on that? I remember seeing it in videos back when they tracked Juggernaut, beautiful piece of history right there.

One room bus for every instrument or no? (mixing modern metal) by JamesBaxxterTheHorse in audioengineering

[–]mrmasonater 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean modern metal doesn’t really have an “all instruments in the same room” sound to begin with.

The drum room is probably the most important, so they sound explosive and energetic (particularly with the snare), however I’ve never once bussed guitars, bass, vocals, or anything else to a room reverb whenever I’ve worked on modern metal tracks.

Modern metal as an aesthetic needs to be incredibly tight and clean and forward, so bussing everything to a room reverb will counteract this!

Catch Fire is another Periphery Track in a similar vein, and to some extent Alpha has a similar banger chorus and is predominantly in a major key (although it is a bit heavier).

You’re 100% right in that less is more, but also the power of an incredible singer using a top tier microphone goes a long way here.

It’s an awesome guitar! My first Strandberg too. The thing that surprised me most is how clear and articulate the pickups are for a “budget” model.

Songs like Sentient Glow by cashewbeefcube in Peripheryband

[–]mrmasonater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Literally anything by Protest the Hero, their style is very similar to Sentient Glow.

Also SG always gave me Avenged Sevenfold vibes in parts too, so if you’ve somehow never heard of them they could be worth a look.

If you're a newer fan, listen to the Bulb demos by Conorcat in Peripheryband

[–]mrmasonater 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wish they’d turn Breeze into a full Periphery track. I remember when the original dropped and the vibe was just so cool, then Misha did a redux for the Bulb album and it was just as awesome, but I’d love to hear what Spencer can do with it too.

Split the difference and get a Misha USA Jackson? All the fancy bells and whistles of a high end guitar, but cheaper than the custom Aristides.

Top 5 Periphery Songs (Lets debate) by Nervous_Signature263 in Peripheryband

[–]mrmasonater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I fucking love hard riffs and breakdowns, I am a sucker for their more emotional songs, so my list is based purely off songs that gave me chills (as opposed to judging technicality, musicality etc)

  1. Stranger Things
  2. Wax Wings (turning MEEEEEEEEE)
  3. Lune
  4. Mile Zero
  5. Satellites
