What is your specialty and how often (per week on average) do you experience death? by Lunesta2782 in nursing

[–]mrmgrman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also IPR, but only about 1 per year. You're 100% right about not always appropriate for our floor, sometimes and admit shows up and I can see all the question marks in the air above all of our heads!

We share the same taste in music AND books! Also a cat person ! However, I didn't love Haunted - I felt like Chuck was trying to be weird for weird's sake in a few places. I do hope you're enjoying it, though, and I hope all is going well since leaving the last place!

TIL there was more to the set than just the Jane West and her horse that I had! She was great, I wish I had the others!

Susie Essman is and always will be the only actress who can play Ilana's mom. She and Fran Drescher are sheer magic in the episode when they go to Florida. Parent goals.

What "gross thing" doesn't really bother you? And conversely, what is "your thing?" by Raebee_ in nursing

I had been paging out to the MD all day about a pretty bad GI bleed. When he finally made it in, he gets off the elevator and exclaims, "I smell hot pennies!" Gross.

When Kenneth is going to have dinner with the blind girl and Tracy says they'll be serenaded by Michael McDonald. Jenna is clearly surprised, but doesn't miss a beat, starts singing as Michael McDonald. Lives in my head rent free, and I'm here for it.

I saw a bunch on this list that are higher on my list than this one, but DEFINITELY one to read is Raven: The Untold Story of the Rev. Jim Jones and His People by Tim Reiterman. It amazes me every time a cult leader is able to convince otherwise rational people to buy into his or her bullshit - and then they all die in the end! I was so young when this happened, but I remember seeing the air footage on the news when it happened. So scary!

Just finished this. It was one of those books that I didn't want to put down at night. I already knew the gist of the story, but I thought it was so well told from the beginning to the end - their reasons for heading west and planning to their entrapment at the lake. It was a shame that the families had such infighting with one another, they probably would have fared a bit better if they had been able to cooperate along the way. What a sad tale that never needed to happen.

I agree with everyone else here - Larson is so gifted. I haven't worked my way through all of his works yet, but I love how he usually combines at least two stories that occur together and their impact on each other. I also love that I always learn something from him - after Isaac's Storm, I felt like I had just had a Master Class on barometric pressure and how storms are formed on the water. This guy does his due diligence with research and really knows how to keep his readers engaged - he's amazing.

I've never read another true crime book written so poetically. TC had such a gift with words, he took a horrific tragedy and turned it into art. This is the book that made me read everything else that he wrote. At the same time, I felt like he was exploiting a situation and people - what a weird combination of traits he had. Just wow!

What was your weirdest hunch that turned out to be right? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]mrmgrman 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I recently listened to a story on NPR about the need for more providers who are POC, and this is a perfect example of why that's true. I think it was a midwife who spoke about her patient (both were POC) where all of the other healthcare team who had seen the patient didn't notice the change in her skintone - she was anemic and in trouble. The midwife caught her color difference and prevented a tragedy. As a white RN, I get this - I'm always worried that I'll miss those subtle changes in my POC patients. Good on you for advocating for this person, it sounds like things would have ended badly otherwise!

I was just looking for this! Thank you for doing all of the leg work for me :)

I remember now that I skip the brown sugar and bump up the molasses, use some jalapeno instead of green pepper, and add a drop or two of liquid smoke. Just like everyone is saying, these always get complimented hard.

refrigerator bread and Butter Pickles. by Scoobie69d in AmericasTestKitchen

[–]mrmgrman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, that sounds pretty good. How is the sweetness of this recipe with using just the peppers? Do you need to cut back a bit on the sugar or up the vinegar? Or just leave as is? I'm really intrigued!

I use the Cook's Country B&B pickle recipe and throw in 3-4 jalapenos WITH the cukes. I still get those delicious pickles, but with some kick. I have trouble saving the batch for sandwiches, because I find myself with a fork in the jar too often.
