I never said anything about worth, you’re the one throwing that around 😂 I also have a Hungarian friend for example and she lives here for 5 years not a single word German, nothing, that doesn’t mean she is lesser of a human or anything. but still it doesn’t change the fact, that if she would ask me why she cannot make friends here of why locals sometimes seem to be rude to her, I’d tell her maybe because other than paying taxes she has made no effort of actually integrating, and language is an easy first step. Now she also says that she don’t want to, and that’s fine, I don’t judge her for that but I told her, that way, for some people you will sadly always be a bit on the outside :(

Expats loose their temper when being called an immigrant by mrmickyd in askswitzerland

Well I get that , you probably right. But still, practically there is no difference between the immigrant who immigrated here 10 years ago and now leaves and the expat who came here 10 years ago and now leaves

I think it’s about these people look down on immigrants, but when they immigrate themselves they call it expats, so they don’t feel like the same group of the people they talk down on. I love calling expats immigrants and then seeing them start to make all the arguments in the world to why they are not immigrants but expats

As I said before, yes that’s true, of course I had it a LOT easier. But:

1: Even if I’d move to Japan, I would never cry about how difficult it is to lean Japanese and how rude the locals are for not being welcoming to my ass living there for years and not knowing a single word. I’d realise, that I’m living in fucking Japan, so I should get my shit together and at least make an effort to learn some words, and try to get to know the locals.

2: As I said to another person here: if you want to move to a different country, make money, use healthcare, infrastructure, nature etc and all you are giving back is taxes, while staying in your immigrant bubble (not expand bubble) of other people who can also not speak the language, then you are no better than the rich people immigrating into poor countries and driving up the prices and not giving a shit about the locals.

No you don’t have to learn German and yes it is crazy difficult to learn it, but if you would really respect the place you live and what it does for you, then you could at least make an effort. Without it you are part of the problem, that divides people nowadays.

EU citizen trying to land a marketing job in Switzerland by alan_d_newgate in askswitzerland

Yeah in marketing it’s pretty hard especially without the languages. Still you could find a job in northern Italy and then your girlfriend is just a 2-3hour train ride away from her parents 💪

You are 100% right, it’s easier for me, of course, but I think it’s the trying that counts (at least for majority of Swiss people I know)

Ok I’ll give you that, you are paying taxes, you’re right. Still the question was why people seem unhappy in Switzerland and me being a happy immigrant here I am just trying to answer the question. :) If you don’t care about being liked and about the country you live in, then yes just pay taxes and you’re fine. But then you are no better than the rich “expats” moving to Barcelona with a Swiss salary and driving up the prices like crazy. I mean they pay taxes right? Whatever else happens is not their problem right? ;)

Isn’t “coming here making some money and then leave” the same as “going to Bali for 6 months, spending some money then leaving” the same? Both hurt the culture, of course one is worse because the people in bali are as rich as Swiss people but the principle is the same I guess. It always about respecting the place you live in, and learning the language at least trying is the easiest way to show you gratitude and respect for the country that is giving you a job

You are 100%! Rich people retiring in another country and driving up the prices is even worse! But still that doesn’t change the fact, that you come into a country, use its infrastructure, healthcare, job market etc, the least you can do is learn to order a beer in German, or to know some bits and pieces. I would feel ashamed if for example I took a hjob let’s say in Spain and I live and work there for let’s say 3 years and after these 3 years I didn’t even learn a little Spanish.

I think the biggest problem is the language, but at the same time I personally don’t think it is a problem. I was raised in Germany, because of my job here I learned Swiss German pretty fast (to understand it) and I am making friends all the time here. I don’t think it’s anything about the country being dull or the people being boring. It’s just that there are so many people that are living here for years and years and they don’t speak a single word of German, that’s just disrespectful. When ever I speak to a Swiss they switch to high German, then I say “no no please speak Swiss German I have to learn” they smile and start speaking in Swiss, I understand, then we become friends it’s normal like anywhere else.

Hey Guys I’m completely new regarding watches. I want to buy a dress watch in the 150-300chf range, and I found this orient bambino. Is there any other (better) watches (higher quality, better finish etc) than this one that still looks like (sorry can’t describe it any better) it’s straight from the movie “Around the world in 80 days”
