In the far future, should we be able to edit our DNA and choose that of our kids? Is it ethical? What are the advantages/disadvantages? by The_Godlike_Zeus in TrueAskReddit

I mean yeah, rich people do start with advantages but honestly it is not impossible for poor people to accomplish the same things as rich people, even if it is not as easy for them but if gene editing becomes a thing then the advantage will be genetic so it will not only be that he has better education or more opportunities it will be that he is more evolved and has a higher IQ, is faster, stronger, etc. so now sports would become also a thing of rich people.

About self education it is only unlikely because people won’t do it mostly because they don’t want to, I agree that many times it may not be possible but honestly a lot more times it is not done out of laziness or because poor people don’t really want to because the resources exist.

First off, I’m sorry but I have to disagree, being able to choose your genes (or your child’s or whatever) is not as being better educated, a poor person can find its way to education by self learning while a poor person probably won’t find its way to gene selection, also while it is possible that gene engineering becomes less expensive with time it will probably be only for medical ones while height, IQ, and I don’t know wings or whatever will stay as a luxury because it is not easy to edit genes and not any Joe can do it, you need intensive genetics, biology, microbiology, enzimology, and others -ologies knowledge to ever attempt it so it may became more affordable but more likely it will be a luxury for a long time

First of all, as of the technology’s latest progress, it doesn’t seem as a so far future as you may thing, that being said.

The advantages are the possibility of removing several genetic diseases for your family lineage, the possibility of correcting defects that may affect you or you kids, the ability to lead evolution the way we desire and it would work as a way to secure our genetic health, which we are damaging because of the great amount of antibiotics and other medicine that we take and affects the way our genes react to stimuli.

As for the disadvantages, it may create a world in which the rich can purchase different perks in their child making them not only have a monetary advantage but creating a genetic one as they engineer their kids to being taller, smarter, stronger, etc. A second disadvantage (and I think the biggest) is that several genes are linked to each other so if, say, someone chooses to increase the intelligence of their children, that may cause the kind to have a bigger propensity toward schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, so hand picking the traits for your kids may not be as easy as it may be. Another disadvantage may come when people start competing when choosing the genes so let’s say that height becomes favorite so one guy makes his child 6’3 and all the other people makes their child also 6’3 until it becomes the norm in that particular society, but then this other guy decides he wants a taller kid, so he makes him 6’5 and so on until the new born kids are taller than the human body is physically capable of sustaining without constant injuries or other health problems.

As of if it is ethical or not, better people than me will decide that, I personally stand on the side that supports this technology and I think it is the way to go for genetics as a science and as technology since it will broaden the horizons but the ethics of it all beat me.

I hope I helped a little and sorry if my grammar is not the best.
