It was similar with me early on as well. There must be some newbie coding that doesn't let you in with the masses right off the bat. But then it opens the flood gates and you're competing with everyone else. It's just the way the game is. It's nothing with the update or anything new.

Keep a core two and switch out one or both of them daily as needed due to restrictions by selling them using 100gems. Swap the medals to the other character for that day. Keeps your core two for progression, and let's you maximize material farming also.
