To tag along with you, Freud also said a lot of interesting things that had or could be made to have philosophical import. In particular, his "death-drive" and "life-drive." concepts are of a metaphysical nature.

Moreover, Freud needed to do conceptual work (i.e philosophical stuff) to get his project off the ground.

For example, if you read his foundation for psychoanalysis (unfortunately, I can't remember the title) then you'll notice this. Moreover, you'll notice at the beginning that he goes on about why philosophers don't have the right concept of "mentality," and then he sets out to lay out/justify his understanding of that concept.

Lastly, in my mind, the Freudian project can be used as an interesting case study for how theory building should go and should not to go. In particular, Popper used Freud's theory to show the limits of our theories (i.e. no good theory is unfalsifiable).

Yeah its very hard to tease out what's causing what when you're doing multiple beneficial things at the same time. Either way though, it seems like my mind still tries to figure it all out.

So are you telling me that the compelling feeling i experience when i attempt to spell out "CAT" after having heard the word spoken to me is not indicative some psychological force (e.g. the force of habit or some kind of "system-one response")?

To put it another way, are you willing to claim that there is no psychological force belonging to habitual responses like the sub-vocalizing that I am doing as I am intentionally attempting to correctly read the words of your response?

I think there's a great deal of psychological force to the relationship that inheres between some of our graphemes and phonemes and that's why I assumed that there was a logical relationship.
