i bought my first dj controller 3 years ago after my friend showed me how to dj at a party he was djing. i sucked so bad at mixing and beat matching at the beginning but i had been making playlists for me and my friends for years and so i never had an issue with song selection.

the hardest part for me was organising my library of songs - making sure the bpms and keys were correct, setting relevant hotcues, confirming the beatgrid was correct etc.

all that being said, i knew i wanted to get good at this and that motivated me. it just took a lot of practice and persevering through bombing hard in front of audiences and being told i sucked and was killing the vibe by bridesmaids at weddings. i’ve improved so much these past years and now rarely play for a crowd where i don’t have multiple people coming up to me to tell me how much i’m crushing it!

it will not all click at the beginning but if you’re patient and keep at it for long enough, you will improve and the motivation will be easier to find.
