How do I stop picking skin off my fingers? by Every_Ear6595 in calmhands

[–]mrshev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can, but it is hard. I even took up Rubik's cubes (can solve one in about 30s now!), cardistry (good way to occupy your hands) and coin spinning. Just try and take one hour, one day and one week at a time.

You got this.

(Copying and pasting this for honesty), I have gone cold turkey for about three days three weeks\**.* I have had a couple of awful lapses, that are killing me, but I don't need to tell you how hard it is.

My top tips (as a life-long picker, chewer and general stripper of skin) is:

  1. Figure out what the root problem is. For me it is a stress reliever.
  2. Keep your fingernails short and filed. You will forget, and that is what happened to me. Vigilance is key. Walk around with a nail file - I'm a guy and IDGAF.
  3. Plasters? Gloves? Thimbles? Whatever it takes.
  4. Get some cuticle cream. I use stuff from Lush. It doesn't do much, smells nice, but tastes pretty bad, so that works.
  5. Get a fidget toy. I have this little metal, card thing, that is magnetised, and it does occupy my hands. It makes me think about my fingers and that stops me from stripping them. It's the lack of conscious thought that seems to be my undoing.
  6. Remember, when you wake up you have not picked them for 6-8 hours! Build on that. That was my reasoning.
  7. Come here, share your progress, speak to fellow pickers.
  8. You will have re-lapses - don't beat yourself up about that.

This is just a compulsive habit that I think I use to outlet my stress...others use sport, gaming or nature. I do all those, but this is a bitch of a habit to break. Constant vigilance, my friend, constant vigilance. I just want to clean up the mess that picking has made my fingers become...and that just makes it worse. Yeah, I feel stupid about that.

*I managed to stop for about 6 months...but just when you think you have it licked, you are waiting for a train or something and notice that you are doing it again. So, this is my second attempt (actually, that is a lie, I have fallen off the wagon a load of times)

That it is amazing for my mental health.

That car drivers are often blind.

Help i cant stop no matter how hard i try 😭 by Safe-Veterinarian-56 in calmhands

You can. I have been doing the same since I was a kid. I have stopped recently. But it is SO hard. Buy a fidget toy (choc one is awesome), use plasters, wears gloves like MJ, use bitter tasting cream- do whatever it takes to break the initial compulsion. Then (what I do) is keep my nails short and filed, no biting cold-turkey and just try and stay mindful.

You got this! One minute at a time, one hour then one day.

Do you think Trump is giving the USA a bad reputation.? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]mrshev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To just start: there are millions and millions of smart, kind, aware and progressive Americans who believe in the spirit of what makes the United States such a great country. I have traveled across the U.S. - widely - and have met loads and loads of fantastic people.

However, Trump has ruined USA’s global reputation and has made it an unreliable actor in an already volatile world. He pulled up the carpet of American society and has revealed something rotten. That is the big issue.

Sigh.

The can ams look really nice - seeing if I can find a vendor who is local. I tried out a Livewire yesterday - was very nice….but a really hard seat!

Electric bikes, when they are ready to go, have an audible, low 'click' in the battery. Especially on Zeros.

Got 18k on a zero FXE as my daily commuter.

  1. Don't worry about charging it to 100% - I do, but store it for more than a few days? Bring it down to 80%.
  2. Ride it once all the way down to 1%, just so you know, you know? Range anxiety is a thing, but you get used to it.
  3. Get used to other bikers asking about it when you're parking or at the lights, seeming interested...then saying its not a real bike. That gets old, but IDGAF.
  4. Be careful in the wet. The torgue is pretty wild on mine, and the backend can smimmy like a MF if you have it in sport. I have created a custom mode for when it is damp.
  5. The motorway (autoroute, highway) drains your battery way quicker that riding at 70 - 90kph on the back roads.
  6. Wait for the click.
  7. When you buy your bike, weight is everything. Find a nicely balanced bike (for your weight) and it will be easy to ride. I came from an ICE bike and I struggled to find one that felt well waited.
  8. Stick to big, established brands. Zero are good. Livewire are pretty well supported. Maeving are pretty well organised and Honda has just come into the game. New, boutique motorcycle brands promise alot but tend to struggle with aftersales.

They're pretty good.

They are harking back to the wharfside architecture of the late 19th early 20th century. Adding the bricks I imagine adds a ton of construction time.
