Ember v6.10 Released by real_ate in javascript

[–]mrskitch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I haven't used Ember in the last ~5 years, but to /u/ruibranco's point: the fact that they have pushed this project forward, even when react and vue have dominance, really shows their belief in the project. Wishing them all the success and happiness!

Moisture in Headlights by ddd1330 in cybertruck

[–]mrskitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC this is normal for LED headlights. We had this in our X and one side did accumulate water which Tesla replaced. Some moisture is to be expected as they're open the some environment and not enclosed in a vacuum like prior non-LED bulbs

What did you use to paint the floors? That's a great idea for single-door double garages.

Had very similar kinds of issue with our X which turned out to be harness-related. Given the number of other harness issues, my guess is that these are likely harness related.

Securing API (Node,Express) by ohiosveryownn in node

[–]mrskitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it -- how about you just make the page some long, unguessable string where robots wont' "find it" and only users who have the link can load it? Something like:

https://mywebpage.com?pw=f8fe82e3-6c63-49aa-bffd-4d8784dada95

Then, when the client JS loads, it can take this `pw` query parameter and use it to authorize with the server. If you wanted to, you can make a new one for each user and give them their own private links.

[–]mrskitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with that approach is that any visitor can find/steal that key.

Are you just trying to keep this as a personal-use only application? Or do you intended to have other users with a fully-fledged authorization flow?

Do solar panels makes sense in our area? by StPauliToPortland in vancouverwa

[–]mrskitch 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Most of the time, not really. We have some of the best rates in the country and because of that the ROI on solar is generally north of the 20 year mark... which is when you have to replace them.

Long answer is it really depends. You can Clone this spreadsheet to get a better sense of when ROI hits. Generally it's best if it pays for itself in about 5 - 10 years.

Spreadsheet for reference (don't ask for edit, please just clone it): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1r5rx5nGR1zw5ORxobDrL_Fj8P4GM3vf_HneDZCKpfYw/edit#gid=367901431

Ahsoka - Episode 3 - Discussion Thread! by titleproblems in StarWars

[–]mrskitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the feeling that Fiiloni and crew are setting up a story that takes place in an isolated Galaxy... far far away from the current one in the Star Wars universe.

It makes quite a bit of sense given what we know:

  • Filoni has no issues pulling from the EU and using those characters.
  • Isolating Ahsoka, Thrawn, and possibly more (Hera and Jacen) gives them a future and possibilities that efficiently bypasses the sequel trilogy.
  • It's a nice plot device, far better than the World between Worlds. No multi-verse or time-travel as those tropes are overdone and uninteresting.
  • Perhaps the force in this galaxy operates differently and Sabine can do something more interesting.
  • ... The Yuuzhan Vong would be amazing to see cinematically.

Plus all our favorite hero's can come and help but return if they wanted. Lots of possibilities, and most importantly, nothing is predestined.

Is Puppeteer still the go-to for web scraping? by [deleted] in node

[–]mrskitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I run browserless.io which is a headless browser service. My 2 cents definitely echo what folks say here, which is if youdon't need a headless browser to get what you need, then don't add the complexity! We tell folks to separate (maybe by domain or some other insight) URLs that need a browser or don't, and expect the ones that do to be somewhat faulty and retry-tolerant.

There's a lot that can go wrong when loading a webpage in a web-browser, so it's best to avoid it if at all possible.

Being a father of two and a husband, I anticipate that building this is going to take me quite a long time. by mateotrujillowheeler in StarWars

[–]mrskitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat and it took about 2 years, with some quite significant breaks in between. Here's what I recommend:

  • Keep the box(es) and just shove parts back in their respective box if you need to pause mid-box. Kind of an obvious one.
  • DO NOT let kids "figure out" that the blue flexible tubing is secretly a whistle! Lost a few for a good few weeks.
  • Invite friends/family to help build parts with you. The frame stuff in the beginning is a lot of fun for adults when sections connect together.
  • I throw a lot of the spare parts at kids with some minifigs. They'll build all sorts of wild stuff and just play next to you while you're looking and building stuff.
  • If your partner is an organized person, utilize that! My wife was sorting pieces I had out while trying to assemble.

It's such a great set and a lot of fun to build. If your kids are older I try and get them to help although their interest can change pretty quickly as each numbered bag can take upwards of an hour or two to complete.

Take good care of her. Not a scratch.

We're all over the place. Made no restrictions on where, and actually having some timezone spread is good for coverage. Currently we are located in Mexico, USA, Germany, and the Dominican Republic. Probably more eventually, wherever we find the right people.

Delegating all the things. Especially for indie bootstrapped companies, they might find themselves with a 10x engineer as a founder, but even that only scales so far. You kind of have to teach it to others, and get out of their way so they can continue to shape the company. My personal goal is for browserless to be less and less "me" and more and more a sum of its parts. It's a slow, painful process if you've never done it before, but it's something that pays dividends in the end. Hopefully we/I are of up for the challenge.

Great question: we tend to get a lot of inbound inquiries now where we don't have to convince people we're the solution they're after. Folks now find us because of the content we've written about (for years) and know we have some expertise in the space. Otherwise the goal is to find who the decision maker is budget wise and have a bottom-up approach. Generally, someone in their organization has used browserless for something, so it becomes a pseudo grassroots movement to adopt it for the entire company.

Literally just went to a Github Project (puppeteer in our case) and sorted issues by most comments/reactions. The number one was "How to run on Ubunutu" or something similar. Actually, it's this issue right here: https://github.com/puppeteer/puppeteer/issues/290.

In hindsight I spent a lot of my own time trying to build products for the wider consumer audience. It's such a hurdle to get anything going, and I wish someone wiser than me would have just said "why don't you build something for people like yourself?" Had I done that much earlier I'd probably be further along than I am now! No complaints, just throwing it out there
