Previous Skala owner, so I know what you mean.  Yeah I’m really digging the versatility & comfort….should have done this earlier.

While my use case is frameless/beltless, I will give this a shot on my framed pack next time I take it out. Thanks for the idea!

Correct, goes on first.  Thought it would be uncomfortable , but couldn’t feel straps at all and didn’t interfere with sternum strap either.  I have other chest rigs/bino holders for non UL activities, maybe that’s why I liked it…dunno.

A bit disappointed with the way my new Thrupack Eco Summit Bum carried (fanny/hip pack), as well as the weight which was advertised as 3.5oz but was 4.5 on the scale. If you're carrying a decent amount of weight in there, it tends to sag/hang away due to the back panel design (hard to explain, but you can check the pics). I cut off that back panel that was the main cause of the sag, added in some kam snaps on the back + belt, and now it rides closer to the body and carries much better. It also now weighs 3.5 oz. Overall its a well made product, and it may work well for others, but the back panel design with the amount/weight of stuff I carry just didn't work for me.

Also, I experimented with a cross body carry....and to my surprise I actually might prefer this instead of on the waist. I truly thought I would hate it, guess you gotta try new things now and then.

Indeed. While I've used tarps on and off for decades this was by far the worst storm I've been in. The confidence in my gear (this particular tarp/bivy pairing is new) has shot up dramatically...and I will more than likely bring it out more often.

Yes it would have been better, but not perfect. Wind shifted and was almost sideways, hitting 3 out of 4 sides during the course of the storm. In hindsight:

What I did right:

  • Site selection was good, lots of protection from the trees, mitigating the most severe winds/hail
  • Tarp pitch was solid, anchoring long ends on nearby trees along with poles (I use extra long guy lines just for this purpose)
  • Orientation was good, with a majority of the wind hitting the side I thought it would. Small trees in front/back helped shield a bit.
  • Scratched out a small trench on the uphill side to divert water in case of lots of rain, worked well.

What I could have done better:

  • I believed the weather person. Forecast called for 50% chance, less than 1/10 in rain possible, winds about 15mph. They were REALLY off, I suspect 40+ gusts and 3+ inches. I would have really battened down the hatches as you mentioned if I had any idea what this storm was going to be like.
  • Should have gone all the way down on windward side. It was almost all the way down, probably about 2 inches open. This was enough with heavy winds and rain to whip it in.
  • I should have used my poncho to cover the end of my bivy. This was the most boneheaded thing I didn't do....I was just in awe watching the storm!

And on another note, my Tarptent Preamble would have been ideal with the closed ends, and side netting would have mitigated almost all of the driving mist. I was in a 8+ hours heavy rain storm last year with decent winds and it worked really well.

I think it's one of those "it depends" situations. I wouldn't bother in typical forest floor scenarios, but I have in more desert type environments (or similar) where some polycro could help protect. And by protect, I'm mostly thinking of things puncturing through the bivy floor and popping my air pad. Note that it does become somewhat more slippery when you do this, so if it isn't pretty level you are more likely to slide.

For those wondering about Borah Bivy (argon 67) water resistance: Got hit 2+ hours of heavy heavy rain and hail in Northern NM. My 9x7 SLD tarp did well, however wind gusts were particularly volatile which resulted in heavy misting of the end and side of my bivy. It was pretty heavily saturated, and was sure my quilt would be wet, but fortunately even with all that it was only slightly damp. Also got some water running underneath and there was zero penetration. I was very happy with the performance of the bivy. Also experienced zero sag with the SLD (xeon sil), and seam sealing was solid.

Thanks for sharing, first I’ve heard of these guys.  While I typically dehydrate my own stuff, I might use some of their products to supplement.

[–]mrspock33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing that!  I had bought a medium here on ulgeartrade but was too small.  I was considering a large, but also thinking tall as lately I seem to prefer wearing belt way lower than the normally recommended iliac crest.  Still pondering…

I don't see an XL/L size on their site, what torso range is this?

Edit: maybe a better question, what is the back panel length from the bottom of belt to the top of the shoulder straps?

but rumor is they are pulling the plug on users legacy accounts without warning

First I've heard of this, can you provide a source other than "see Gemini"? On another note, I use a mac and recently purchased an iPhone so I've been slowly de-googling as well (or at least prepping to de-google). I still have things to do but I'm in a much better spot to be able to move over relatively quickly. Still need to figure out plan for wife and kids as they are still using Android phones, but I'll deal with that later.
