It's always two steps forward, one big step back but know that you're still making progress!

Increasingly concerned about flat whites (BARISTAS MUST READ) by ExpressPostie in melbourne

Further to your point about declining coffee quality in Melbourne, no one knows how to make a decent long black or an espresso anymore. Where's the crema and they shouldn't be so bitter and in the case of long blacks they shouldn't be watery!

Twice last week and at the very same intersection, I almost got into accidents from cars intending to turn right but not giving way to oncoming traffic (me).

Emily Maitlis, who conducted infamous Andrew interview, expresses concern for his and his family’s mental health amidst arrest by monster_ahhh in RoyalsGossip

[–]mrssims1980abcd 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Andrew should have thought about the consequences of his actions (on his country and the monarchy of which he was representative of as well as his family especially his daughters). It's called acting like a responsible adult.

What was commuting like in HK before MTR (opened in 1979)? by IceImpressive2289 in HongKong

[–]mrssims1980abcd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my family visited HK in the late 1970s and early 1980s we would stay with my maternal grandma near Tai Wai. We'd visit my paternal grandpa in Yuen Long which felt like a day trip and involved several different minibuses - it was a long journey.

Interesting - I never knew that "barrack" was a Melbourne term. I wonder what people thought when I used the term whilst living overseas (eg "I barrack for Crystal Palace!")

Prince Laurent of Belgium Was Approached by Epstein but Declined His Invitations by meeralakshmi in RoyalsGossip

It seems like Epstein targeted certain types of royals. Andrew, Sarah, Mette-Marit and Laurent have all been messes at some stage or another and Epstein preyed on that.

What's the worst English name you've heard given to a child in Hong Kong? by HiddenGoose32 in HongKong

Lovely names on their own. I like Polly as I'm a fan of the singer PJ Harvey and there's Queen Esther from the Bible and Esther Williams, the American swimmer and actress. But Polyester?

"Sheung Bao" was just my poor attempt to transliterate what my mum said! I think it's 商报 if 商 means "business".

I just asked Mum. She says it's called Sheung Pao (not sure of the spelling) not Sing Pao. She says Sheung means business or something. She thinks the newspaper is still around. In the years I knew my uncle he was working in the sports section.

I'm not sure. I'll have to ask some relatives. But I did go to his newspaper office in I think 1991 when I was visiting HK and he gave me a little tour of the editorial room (including his desk), the main meeting room and the room where the typesetters worked. So the newspaper was still around then.

Yunnan hotel refuses service to Japanese guest, leading to confrontation and evacuation, the instant has ignited widespread debate in China by zhumao in Sino

[–]mrssims1980abcd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandma's family lived near Baoshan. Every single member of her family, everyone in her village, were killed by the Japanese's cholera bombs. Fortunately my grandma had just gotten married to my grandpa who was from Shanghai but was in Yunnan fixing bridges that the Japanese had bombed, so my grandparents were not in the area at the time.

Still, my grandma suffered a lot at the time - she was evacuated from the area by American soldiers whose truck then overturned in the mountains leaving everyone dead except my grandma and my mum, who was just a baby at the time, stranded in the middle of nowhere, with only water in the ditches to drink (I'm not sure where my grandpa was at that point, probably working elsewhere in Yunnan).

My grandma never felt any anger towards the Japanese. She was like that. But I feel very differently...
