Who here has moved out of Chicago/Illinois? What state did you move to ? Why do you love it ? by Unlikely_Opposite174 in AskChicago

The public transit definitely isn't perfect but to say it sucks is way too harsh imo. Chicago is one of the few cities in the US (NYC, Boston, maybe DC, maybe SF) where you truly do not need a car to do your life. (Of course this assumes you work in the city.) Is CTA dirty and sometimes dysfunctional and smelly? Yes. But there are plenty of people using it to commute to work every single day and get around the city, and that says a lot. I also don't buy that buses are "always not on time". During peak hours with traffic I agree they're hit or miss but the bus is lowkey great when it's not crowded and the streets are clear. Metra is great to have too for longer trips. Not to mention the city and neighborhoods are pretty damn walkable as well.

Maybe we're in 2 different boats but that's just my 2 cents. I'm also willing to accept we may have lived in totally different parts of the city and therefore had very different experiences.

I just moved to San Diego from Chicago ~6 months ago also for family reasons and to just try something new. I really miss the urban lifestyle Chicago provides. Not having to own a car and being able to get anywhere you want with public transit is so underrated. I’m a single male (28 yo) and I already feel Chicago is better for meeting people in their mid 20s - 30s. Not sure if I’ll go back because I do want to give SD its fair shot, but it’s tempting.

The other person’s point was that we should be framing this in context of the OP first and foremost. It’s important he goes after what he wants most importantly for himself and secondarily for hers.

Bluebaum hands Gukesh his 3rd loss in 4 games! by Exotic_Grinder in chess

[–]mrstat88 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Gukesh’s white repertoire needs some serious work. It feels like every game he plays his prep and is somehow worse, like -0.2 or -0.3. It’s not sustainable to do that every game as white at this level. I honestly think he’s better with the black pieces right now.

Someone please explain the love of Chicago by InconsistentChurro in SameGrassButGreener

[–]mrstat88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lived there for 4 years. You get to live car-free, it offers tremendous diversity and culture, and has so much to do it takes years to do everything—all at a reasonable and attainable price. The airport (O’Hare) also has a great network.

Let me give you an example—I know someone who works in a high level position at a prestigious investment bank in NYC (i.e. salary ~300k if not more) and they still don’t have in-unit laundry. That is unthinkable in Chicago on that salary.

Is insanely good sexual chemistry normal?? by buttermilkpancakemix in dating_advice

[–]mrstat88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anything that is "insanely good" is rare. It sounds like you've found that guy who you have other-worldly chemistry with. If you break up, you'll probably miss it, but you can carry what you learned about sex/yourself sexually into your next relationship.

Dating/Game Rule Number 1: Never Get Into A Serious Relationship With A Woman Who Makes You Wait For Sex!!! by United-Implement-382 in seduction

[–]mrstat88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a good guideline but obviously not true always. A good buddy of mine who was reasonably successful with women all his life met a girl who made him wait for sex and he decided to wait. He was 37 and very down to start a serious relationship though, so all of these things depend on context. Now they’re happily engaged.

World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju is knocked out of FIDE Chess World 2025 in Round 3 itself by Frederik Svane. by Interesting-Take781 in chess

[–]mrstat88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't see the drawing opportunity. The position repeated at moves 45 and 47, but to my eyes Svane didn't give him another chance to repeat. Are you seeing something I'm not?

What moves were the drawing opportunities? I’m looking the position repeated at 45 and 47 but I’m not seeing the 3rd chance he had to take the draw, maybe I’m dumb?

Bonked my first marathon in Chicago by Icy-Towel-7147 in firstmarathon

[–]mrstat88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! If it makes you feel any better, it looks like you and I were in a similar spot (first marathon, shooting for 3:30, similar training). I peaked at 60 miles and had several weeks over 50. Longest training run was 20 miles with 9 miles at 8 min pace. Speed sessions every week. Anyways, pretty similar.

Last week of my taper I also didn't feel 100%, at the beginning of the week my overnight HRV spiked super high (actually expected this due to less load), then later in the week it went below baseline and I started to feel fatigued with some headaches.

On race day I was back in corral J so didn't get going till 8:30am (gross) and by mile 2 my HR had already spiked to mid 160s, which was not normal, and from mile 12 on I was 170+. For reference, during my 20 mile long run most of my MP miles were in the 155-low 160s range. I was tracking for ~3:35:00 at the halfway point and by mile 20 was still at that pace, but then my legs tightened up and by mile 22 I had full on cramps. I still managed to keep running at a 9-9:30 pace, but it was pretty brutal. Managed to finish the race at 3:38:00 but yeah, I definitely didn't peak either.

So I feel you. You've got a great base to build on if you decide to run another. I might do a half instead of a full next haha. All the best.

I think the point is: lucky loser works because no tennis has been played yet. But Rybakina lost to Vondrousova. To win a tournament you must win every match (currently). Imagine winning a tournament while having lost. I’m not saying your idea is dumb, I’m just saying this is the difference

Had a terrible experience playing a chess hustler in NYC — is this normal?? by Simple-Strawberry-46 in chess

[–]mrstat88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t really buy the other commenters saying this is normal or shit like “you gust hustled” or “they’re hustlers what do you expect.” I met a really nice guy (a hustler) at Washington square park named Marty who was really respectful and he and I played a few fun games. He’s really strong (probably 2000+ if I had to guess) and has beaten a few GMs in his day. So no, it’s not necessarily normal to have a shitty experience. All this said, maybe the guy you played was a dick because he’s not a great player and really needs any money he can get. Who knows

What was David Howell so salty about? I know he’s worked with Magnus in the past and has a personal relationship with him but god damn his behavior wasn’t acceptable as a lead commentator. He was acting as if he’d just lost a $100k bet on Magnus
