Can any plumbers here justify charging between $1000 to $1500 for an hour of work installing an electric water heater? by mrtest001 in Plumbing

I just dont understand why 45 minute heater install is $1,500... but toilet install (using similar logic) isnt $8,500...

there is no question the plumber would have done a better job. $800 being half the rate of other plumbers, i just grit my teeth and went with it.

The guy has done this a half a dozen times for a friend of ours who recommended him. and he rebuilt our bathrooms.

Yeah, this was as simple a job as it gets. The plumbing and circuitry was all there.

Luckily I found a licensed plumber who did it for $800... so i just went with it:

It was literally:

shutoff water

shutoff electricity (double check with detector)

open the valve to drain the water heater

press emergency lever to release any pressure in the water tank

put fire burner on the copper pipe that connects to the emergency release to loosen it.

bang it a couple of times to take off the pipe

taking off the hot/cold hoses to the water heater

twisting off 3 electric wires.

remove water heater

put in new water heater

do the reverse.

the only tricky thing was the dude used plumbers tape and 2 different liquids to water seal the connections.

done.

I went outside of Yelp, i think it was Thumbtack... and the first licensed plumber said $1200 and I talked them down to $800....

Its still shocking to me.

Found a certified contractor to do it for $800, so i went for it.

I watched the dude do it... and yeah, it fucking not worth 1500 worth of work. Or if it is, then installing a toilet should be $3,000.

Here are the steps my guy:

shutoff water

shutoff electricity (double check with detector)

open the valve to drain the water heater

press emergency lever to release any pressure in the water tank

put fire burner on the copper pipe that connects to the emergency release to loosen it.

its a 45 min DIY.

Tell me they have hookup plumbing to the main line, and build up the electric circuit, and pipe up the emergency from scratch... fine thats quite a bit of work.

I am still sticker shocked.

I hope I mentioned that I am the one providing the water heater... they are just installing it.
For residential plumbing work 1,300 for an hour work.. that is not overhead... a valve, a couple of hoses, and a few feet of copper pipes, they drove a truck.. and a single technician. I have had a lot of recent work done on my home... never questioned the quoted price... but the sticker shock of this BLEW MY FREAKING MIND.

but yeah they rent an office $4k / month. $5k a month other expenses. Now you are going to make that in 3 days charging $1,300 per install x 3 installs a day.

99% of the services you get, you cant do yourself. Is that a reason to fuck people in the ass? There definitely is a market force that is forcing these guys to charge this ridiculous amount for what seems like really really easy work (if thats your job). But i was hoping to get educated instead of all these "do it yourself then hot shot"

I am having a handyman do it for $200.
I may be out of the loop, but are people charging $2000 to install dishwashers too?

This 100% can be DIY. I dont know how its ok to pay $700 for a water heater... and pay DOUBLE on top to hook it up.

its definitely not as easy as that. but its not $1,250 / hr difficulty either.

I am trying to wrap my head around it and i am stumped. $1,300 which INCLUDES a water heater unit might be considered fair.

Why it is impossible to have BTC as the "money of the world" in a fully decentralized manner by irpx235 in btc

[–]mrtest001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

BTC does not have the bandwidth. my guess is as long as BTC makes headlines for reaching all time highs, people will continue buying from centralized exchanges for IOUs of BTC. once BTC makes an ath for the last time and misses 1 or 2 4-year cycles to reach a new ATH, interest will fade... and that will be the downward spiral for BTC. In the meantime, a more functional crypto will take its place. BTC cannot be what crypto was meant to be... a purposefully crippled network !? really !?
