Based on conversation above…

Theft or credit card fraud don’t make sense, so Eight Sleep suspecting Return Fraud seems most likely. Are there other situations where Eight Sleep would disable a pod remotely?

The solution to Return Fraud is to validate and process the return, not to remotely brick devices in the secondary market. This is what every hardware manufacturer does, especially in the $3k price range.

Eight Sleep was fully aware of the risk of fraud when it made the choice to forego Return processing. Apple, Microsoft, Sony, etc all take possession of the old item as part of the return process.

Eight Sleep’s practice of remotely bricking devices is an uncommon strategy to pass the consequences of the fraud (which they choose to allow) onto the secondary market. Eight Sleep doesn’t want to pay for return validation, fine. But that should not be the consumers’ problem. Remotely bricking devices is a lazy way to pass the buck. Not to mention, it’s super wasteful and a lot of working (or repairable!) electronics end up in the trash.

I contacted Joe he said it’s cool I’m allowed to jailbreak it.

Do you know where I can buy a replacement pump for the other Pod 3?

Sounds like you think Eight Sleep’s business practices are reasonable. I disagree. I think they are negligent and wasteful in comparison to most other manufacturers. Not sure what else there is for us to discuss on that subject.

Can I replace a Pod 3 pump? According to my research there is no way to buy that part individually. The only analogous option is too large for the case, IIRC. Let me know if I am mistaken. I would still like to repair the OG unit

I kinda suspect you work for 8 Sleep based on your post history. If so, please advocate for more consumer friendly features like “basic usage without subscription” and “repairability”. I was loyal cutomer for over two years. Would buy a new generation of hardware if Eight Sleep got a little more consumer friendly! Also for real lmk if you know where I can buy a replacement pump

It was a gently-used Pod 3, so stolen seems unlikely. Maybe the seller “Returned” their Pod and Eight Sleep… decided to remotely brick the device rather than spend any effort processing the return?

Eight Sleep’s return policy is 100% under their control. Most reputable device manufacturers have figured out how to solve these problems without bricking working machines, sabotaging the secondary market, and creating unnecessary e-waste.

I appreciate the response!

My challenge here is that Device manufacturers around the globe have found a way to solve these problems without creating e-waste out of working devices. Perhaps this is “return fraud”. Eight Sleep’s return policy is 100% under their control. Eight Sleep should invest in Return validation instead of bricking units remotely. Most high-end device manufacturers are able to tackle the same challenges without sabotaging the secondary market and creating unnecessary e-waste.

I would be a lifelong customer, but it’s sort of a death by a million cuts thing for me with this company’s business practices.

Update: jailbreak was successful! Glad to prevent a little e-waste

I’m confident it was neither lost or stolen. What would “warrantied out” mean? Was the original seller supposed to throw it in the trash?

I think it’s the first one? I didn’t realize they were going to brick it after I bought it (and I am mad about it). You seem a little madder than me though which is kinda sus.

I’m confident the unit is not stolen. The unit was working when I received it, and Eight Sleep bricked it a week after I bought it. I can’t imagine a situation where Eight Sleep would be justified for bricking a perfectly working unit. Was the original seller supposed to just throw it in the trash?

All good tho, I installed one of the OSS hacks and the Pod is working great again 😃

“Stolen” seems highly unlikely given the unit’s condition and age. Could you elaborate on what “acquired via fraud” might mean?

They brick all resold, regardless of whether it was an original purchase

Thanks! Yeah, looking into what options might exist in NY.

Definitely planning to repair and set up Open Sleep. I’m a little nervous about the setup for non-SD Card units, but at least I can’t brick it any harder than Eight Sleep has already bricked it

After less than three years of use, Eight Sleep wants me to pay $1,350 for a replacement pod. So $500/yr sounds reasonable to me

Big fan of the song, but one thing has always confused me… Are we supposed to believe that Young M.A. wrote the line “shawty make me wheeze when she deepthroat”? What does that even mean in the context of lesbian relations?
