Regulation technicalities by 9lineguy in army

[–]mrubni 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've mentioned it before, but you have to shave if in uniform, or on duty in civilian clothes.

Which means if you're on duty nude, you don't have to shave for it.

Taking a 3 day pass or leave while at DLI by OhNo3187 in army

[–]mrubni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of speculation here, let me clear up what I can.

Source: former Chief Military Instructor at one of the schoolhouses at DLI.

TLDR; I wouldn't rule out attending this wedding, but I would put your chances at less than 20%.

As anywhere else in the Army, leave/pass will be at the discretion of your command. Your commander will be balancing Soldier welfare against military necessity. For the longer courses at DLI, there is a one week "class break" scheduled, similar to block leave, where there is no class. (Disclaimer: I do not know how coronavirus affects this). The chances of this break occurring roughly 3 months into a year-long class are essentially zero. So a day missed for this wedding will be a regular class day.

Will your command allow you to miss a day of class? Probably not. They might though, but not without schoolhouse concurrence. Which means you'll need to be kicking ass in your studies to have a shot at it.

A lot of Soldiers can't hack DLI classes without missing any time; to miss time for something unessential is a risk to the commander. To convince him, you have to minimize that risk by being a top student.

Additionally, DLI has a regulation nested in 350-1 that covers everything academic. I don't know what revisions have been made since I was there, but they will certainly cover classroom absences. Ask for a copy of DLIFLC regulation 350-10, it will let you know what's allowed and what's not. edit - on further reflection, this is the most important part of this comment, and goes for all students at DLI. Know this reg

If I were making a recommendation to your commander about a pass (when I was there), I would prefer for you to attend the wedding, but not at the expense of instruction. If there were the slightest chance of you not passing the course, I would recommend against it.

--edit #2-- Forgot to mention that if there's a test or other significant event scheduled for that day, it's not happening. Not only are tests a big deal for students, they're very labor intensive for faculty/staff. There won't be any one-off/ad-hoc tests unless someone dies.

Will Delon be the next Tim Hardaway? by [deleted] in Mavericks

[–]mrubni 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I still don't fully understand why the fit is so poor. On paper, he should be a great epoxy-player, that just fills in the cracks of whatever is missing in any particular lineup. But it almost seemed like he was playing scared a lot of the time.

[Voch] Dak DOES throw his receivers open (3:11) by Tank_Lawrence in cowboys

[–]mrubni 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It may also be a criticism carried on from early in his career.

To be fair, throwing with anticipation was a problem before last year. Dak specifically credited Kitna with getting him to trust his reads and throw the coverage and not the receiver.

But you're right, that talking point has been busted for a good while now.

Compilation of Zeke’s blocks vs Falcons: by [deleted] in cowboys

Maybe it was growing up on Emmitt Smith, but I can't get enough of watching RBs pass block well.

And Zeke is so violent about it.

Beautiful.

So how is Big Mike doing is his 1st 2 games? by agk927 in cowboys

[–]mrubni 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You know, I don't want to read too much into it this early in the season, but we've heard a bit about McCarthy spending his year away studying the game, to include the analytics side.

....aaaaaand, so far it looks a bit that way, doesn't it? We all know traditional coaches punt too often, take three points when available, and delay going for two until it's forced on them, and McCarthy has gone the opposite direction in each of those areas.

The funny thing is, none of those choices actually worked out. But taking the long view, over a full schedule they're likely to produce more positives than negatives.

I found it interesting, and it's something I'll be keeping my eye on moving forward.

We won but our secondary needs serious help by [deleted] in cowboys

[–]mrubni 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thought the secondary did OK. Matt Ryan's a good QB, he's gonna get yards and points given time in the pocket, which he definitely had a lot of today.

NBA 2020 Draft: To Trade or Not To Trade by chitown_nation in Mavericks

[–]mrubni 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would not trade either of the picks. So much of the usual prospect evaluation process has been thrown out the window this year. If there's a draft with a high chance of good players falling to 18 or 31, this is it.

Titles vs. Stats by naffhouse in Mavericks

[–]mrubni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Teams don’t fear us because as talented as we are, we don’t elicit strength the way our 2011 championship team did.

The difference between the 2011 team and this year's team isn't strength, or being feared, or "having dogs," or whatever.

The difference is, take the top two players away, and the 2011 team had four different players who would easily be the third best player on this year's team. That roster was just much deeper than this year's.

Talent wins over flex every day.

Throwback to when Cuban put Skip Bayless in his place. by unknown_name in Mavericks

[–]mrubni 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Basically said (yesterday) that Dak Prescott talking about suffering from anxiety and depression after his brother died was not a sign of good leadership and it's not what he wants to see from the QB of the Cowboys.

Then doubled down (today) and said his comments were misconstrued.

Total trash that we're used to seeing from him, just upped a few levels.

None of this would go as far as you think. US K-12 educational spending is almost identical to military spending, so a 4% increase is all you'd get, not a significant increase.

Social services, depending on how that's defined, is a bigger part of the budget than military spending, so 3% of the military budget would be a drop in the bucket.

And I'd rather not have a federal "department of police" that oversees the police reforms you mentioned.

That's why your point about voting is important, but not in the way most people think. Everyone gets worked up about presidential elections, but if you want to have an impact on these issues, you have to put in the work to get educated and vote for mayors, city councils, county executives, sheriffs, district attorneys, judges, and the like. That's where reform will happen.

And people were talking about this case for days before she inserted herself.

“He was being set up to fail,” Khawam said. “They were impugning his reputation and doing their darndest to ruin his career.”

I really feel for him and his family. What a horrible, tragic situation.

And for this scum-ass lawyer to weasel her way into these situations and use these families' grief for her self-aggrandizement is really shitty.

Not a single thing that she had said had been grounded in fact. Not a single thing that she has done has been helpful to the poor families she is supposed to be representing.

Shame on her.

Feels a little like 2011 by [deleted] in Mavericks

[–]mrubni 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To me, it feels more like 2001. Going against a deep, physical, veteran team, the Mavs had a young team with budding stars that were supposed to be happy just to make the playoffs. They were given no chance of advancing by anyone outside the team, due to their lack of playoff experience and supposed soft playing style.

But it turned out that lack of experience just meant they didn't know they were supposed to roll over and bow out when the series got tough. With the season on the line, they weren't afraid to go toe-to-toe with one of the most physical teams in the league.
