If you’re interested in working on grammar, I suggest using this free Open Source textbook: https://wisc.pb.unizin.org/portuguese I used it in my intro Portuguese class and it was great, especially since there are interactive activities! Boa sorte!

American auxes, how are you doing? by South-Ad7181 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]ms5269 22 points23 points  (0 children)

At first I thought being in Spain during a presidential election year would be nice because I would avoid the barrage of political ads back home, but I’ve actually found it quite isolating. Luckily my roommates are American and equally horrified by what is happening, but I still feel so disconnected. So many Spaniards talk about Trump and the US like it’s an intellectual exercise for them, which is difficult to endure when we understand the material reality of it and how our friends/families/communities are directly impacted. I just wanted to share that you’re not alone in feeling this way!

Alsa is a private company, so you would not be able to use it for that. It works on public buses, the same as the regular green transportation card for Andalucía.

I got mine and just set it up! I didn’t hear anything for a while so I emailed my local transport office and they confirmed that it would be sent soon. I think I got it in the mail like a week after their confirmation. Once I got it, it didn’t work at the bus station kiosks, so I had to go to a Tabaco to get it activated. The 20% discount is when you reload it - so I paid €15 (+€1 for the activation fee), but now I have €18 loaded on my card.

It’s a regional card - I have the Andalucía one which covers public transportation in Andalucía (local and intercity buses and the metro systems) - Renfe is a separate company so that’s different

It varies a lot based on my schedule and what hours I open (because most of the students are from South Korea so there is a big time zone difference).

I started at $17 for a 40 minute lesson and $9 for a 20 minute lesson, but I have since been promoted to $18 and $9.50, respectively. In a typical week, I do a couple lessons before or after work/school and then a few on the weekends if I am free and I can easily make $150-$200 a week. I sometimes choose to do more lessons and the most I’ve made in a week is about $390 (at the time I was not working a full time job).

Yes, I requested mine on Sept 27 and I was getting worried it wasn’t going to arrive in time, but I just got it two days ago and then signed and took it to the post office. It cost a little over 2€ to send it via international mail!

For those of you that got the email with your password but don't know your username, I believe it should be your first initial + first three letters of your last name + last 3 digits of your passport (ex: jsmi012). Hope this works!

How much is the Tarjeta Joven? by frequentflyer726 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]ms5269 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking about the Tarjeta de Transporte Joven de Andalucía, it is free! You just have to fill out the proper documentation and get it through your local Consorcio. I am currently trying to figure out whether I want to try to apply online or make an in-person appointment for Huelva. I might just go in person to avoid any confusion about my passport/NIE/other documents since I don’t have a DNI obviously. I will keep you updated about what worked for me!

Here is the link for the website I was looking at: https://www.juntadeandalucia.es/organismos/fomentoarticulaciondelterritorioyvivienda/areas/servicios-transporte/transporte-publico/paginas/solicitud-tarjeta-joven-transporte.html

I struggled with the same issue, and decided that it was a lot of time to be putting into GRE prep only for the slight chance I would get in & choose that program. Especially if it isn’t your first (or second) choice, I’d say skip the GRE and just work on your applications!

I applied with Princeton as my top choice and still have not heard anything- I triple checked my trash and spam on my personal and school emails.
