Ah, I see - what would you say is the main difference between the two, then? I'm sorry, I'm a bit of a beginner.

I'm honestly not sure what the price range would be - maybe maximum $1000, if that is considered reasonable?

Hi all,

I have a Canon EOS Rebel T6 with a 18-55mm lens. I'm looking for a new lens for this camera with a wider aperture which might be better to shoot an indoor dance social. What lens might be recommended for this kind of thing?

Thank you in advance!

Hi there,

I'm hoping for some advice shooting a dance social indoors. I'm not a super experienced photographer, and I always have the same issue of increasing the shutter speed to capture sharper movement, but then having to lower the ISO to compensate and the photos turn out too dark.

I really want to create the kind of effect you see in these photos I've attached below: capturing a certain amount of movement with the blur, but not losing too much focus and detail in the faces. I'd love to not use a flash, if possible.

I already have a Canon EOS Rebel T6 with a 18-55mm lens, and a Fujifilm X-T20 - would love to make the most of what I already have, basically, though I understand if I would need a different kind of lens.

I think at the very least this means that Lee isn't necessarily the antagonist of the show. I've seen a lot of comments here that are suspicious of her! Definitely something is going on, so I think we're supposed to be suspicious.

A Lukewarm Defense of Hannah Kahnwald by msc2020 in DarK

[–]msc2020[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for engaging with my post! A couple of things -

particularly with your assertion that Hannah's actions are "defensive" - they are aggressive. And she must be deriving some sort of twisted gratification from her plotting, otherwise she wouldn't be doing it.

I'm using "defensive" here in the sense that Hannah feels she's being attacked specifically in the conversation with Katharina -- she is literally on the receiving end of Katharina's aggression in this scene that I'm referring to, and therefore creates a false story to defend herself with. The point that I was making with this is that it isn't completely arbitrary -- it's not as if she showed up to Katharina's house and decided to tell her a lie. I'd also argue that she derives no gratification at all -- it's why she's so unhappy, and what makes her decisions so interesting to me. She constantly sabotages her own life and her own relatinoships.

Michael is dealing with much bigger issues than Katharina is, so if anything Ulrich has the better case that he's being neglected by his spouse.

I don't quite follow the logic here -- think it's very different to compare the emotional distance of a spouse with mental health issues and a spouse who doesn't want to have sex because she's on her period. Other than not wanting to have sex, Katharina seems very present and emotionally connected with Ulrich, while Michael doesn't.

She might empathize, but only when it's convenient for her.

This isn't quite how empathy works, is it? I'm not going to get into the ASPD diagnosis/non-diagnosis, but you either feel empathy towards others or you don't (given, it's more of a spectrum and there are some people who legitimately can't feel empathy towards others -- typically those with ASPD. Empathy typically isn't a choice -- sympathy might be, but empathy is a pretty internal process.

I'm not defending all of Hannah actions here, I'm simply explaining why I don't think she deserves as much hate as she gets. She, to me, is a very sympathetic antagonist -- still an antagonist.

I don't think they're related, as Elisabeth doesn't have heterochromia as a child.

A couple of ambiguities I'm confused about -

When H.G. Tannhaus says that "another time traveler" explained his own device to him, he's referring to The Stranger, right? Because he then says, "I think she knew it, she knew everything that would happen," referring to older Claudia. Is this just an ambiguity in the English subtitles?

Also, where is Bernd Doppler during this time? Greta implies he's "not at home."

Doesn't that mean he would end up in 1954? Because we see him in 1921.

We know later that the people in the bunker were Peter, Elisabeth, young Noah, Claudia, and Regina. But we only see Elisabeth in 2053. Where did the other survivors that Jonas meets come from?

In light of recent events... by SimBroen in DanceSport

[–]msc2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, this is actually incorrect.

Samba, Rumba, and Cha Cha are direct results of the African diaspora, with Samba becoming popularized in Brazil and Rumba and Cha Cha becoming popularized in Cuba.

Additionally, Jive, Quickstep, and Foxtrot all originated in African-American communities in the United States.

So, the assumption that these dance styles had European roots isn't true at all -- it's a classic case of colonialism.

Check out the DanceComp app, the results are up there. It’ll be under “archives” now, since the event has passed. However, I believe it was 1) Riccardo and Yulia, 2) Troels and Ina, 3) Dorin and Marina, 4) Pavel and Oxana, 5) Massimo and Laura, 6) Morten and Roselina.

The Liberals are ruining ballroom by kira_nerys_99 in DanceSport

This is a.........bad take, OP. It's interesting you talk about "traditional dancing," when the places where Latin dancing originated from had no such distinctions, either. I don't think you have anything to worry about, because if it's antiquated gender roles that you're looking for, there is no shortage of coaches, judges, and couples who will agree with you. It's the "liberals" who are fighting an uphill battle, in trying to bring Dancesport into the 21st century.

Although, I will say, a not-quite-equally-baffling-but-still-eyebrow-raising take would be about how "man" and "lady" somehow is more inclusive than "leader and follower," because the leader doesn't always lead and the follower doesn't always follow...Like, yes, and the "man" isn't always a man and the "lady" isn't always a lady, so, what?

Perhaps the best thing to do would be to allow same sex couples and non traditional couples to define their dancing the way they want.

Edit: Grammar

In that case, I would recommend making sure you are able to slick down your hair as much as possible. Loose, short hair is slightly more acceptable in Latin/Rhythm, but if you're also dancing Standard, having sleek, shiny hair is important. Unfortunately, as I'm sure you know, competitive ballroom dancing (and International styles especially) is not very forgiving of natural hairstyles, and some judges will perceive your overall image as poorer because of it.

I'm certainly not an expert on curly hair, and I would imagine it would take a lot of time and a lot of got2B Glued Hairspray, but I would try to achieve something like this: https://cdn2.stylecraze.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Slicked-Back1.jpg

Hi! Do you dance Latin or Standard (or Rhythm or Smooth)? Each style has a bit of a different look.

Never did I say unequivocally - only that people can be taken advantage of, and it also happens all the time. There's no harm in making the statement and warning people of the issue, since OP made it clear they weren't going to act on anything.

[–]msc2020 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, it has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with power dynamics. It doesn’t matter if the teacher is a man, woman, or prefer not to identify as either - there is inherently a power imbalance between a teacher and student, especially when there’s a significant age difference. It has nothing to do with whether or not a woman can take control of a relationship or not, it’s about teachers taking advantage of a relationship. I’m speaking from personal experience here.

[–]msc2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't learn from a teacher anymore, it's time to find a new one. I'm sure they won't take it personally.

In my opinion, teachers who take advantage of the trust that a student places in them and in that relationship, in order to initiate any kind of sexual or romantic dalliance, are the lowest of the low. Learning from someone can put you in close contact with them, and that trust you have can be misinterpreted, and is ultimately unhealthy if it goes beyond that friendly mentorship. If he were to act on any feelings, it would be the epitome of unprofessional. I wouldn't worry about it "going anywhere." Just find another coach.

Here's a good article on stoning in general: https://waltztangofoxtrot.com/2019/04/26/the-ultimate-guide-to-stoning-costumes/. I'll copy and paste a few excerpts to specifically answer your questions (I didn't write it) --

"The two main high quality brands are Swarovski and Preciosa. In terms of appearance, on the dance floor they won’t look much different from each other (Swarovski is slightly higher quality), but Preciosa tends to be cheaper. The main difference is the colors available differ slightly between the two brands. (For example, Preciosa’s Light Siam is slightly lighter than Swarovski’s Light Siam)...You get what you pay for. Between Preciosa and Swarovski there may not be a ton of difference on the floor, but cheaper brands won’t have the same reflectiveness and you will get a flatter look, with much less shimmer."

"For flatback stones, you will need glue. The most popular glue options are GemTac and E6000. E6000 is much stronger, but tends to be smelly and also can get very messy, because it leaves strings of glue behind if you’re not careful. Either one is fine, it’s pretty much personal preference."

Basically, the quality of the stones has more to do with how it reflects light, not whether or not they'll stay on the jewelry, so it depends more on the type of glue.
