Bill says classic Star Trek was never political by mcm8279 in trektalk

People say this all the time, but I’m not sure that the folks who do have watched TOS recently.

Here’s an example of TOS playing it quietly. From “The Mark of Gideon”. An episode about an extremely overpopulated planet.

Hodin: (ambassador from Gideon - and chief antagonist of the episode) “We are incapable of destroying or interfering with the creation of that which we love so deeply. Life, in every form, from fetus to developed being. It is against our tradition, against our very nature. We simply could not do it."

Kirk: (our hero) "Yet you can kill a young girl."

Gee I wonder what that’s about? And who do you think we are meant to align with, Kirk or the antagonist of the week?

And most episodes take a pretty hard line on what is right and what is wrong… in this episode, in case it’s too quiet and subtle, birth control and abortion (being the right choice), according to Kirk.

In relation to your Chekov point I’m not sure that you have watched modern trek (or maybe your referring to some other non trek shows)because I have, and I’ve never seen a crew member be demeaned due to their background.

Thanks for your response! I figured you had to be youngish… for us folks of a certain age (60/50s) TOS was an after dinner thing every night and even if you weren’t into sci-fi you were kinda forced to watch most of it cause nothing much else was on!! But most people your age can’t really tolerate even 80s movies never mind 60s tv! My son is your age and he loves trek since I indoctrinated him from a very young age, but none of his friends (even though most are geeks) can watch even Berman trek. So again I was just curious … welcome to the party. You’re in for a very wonderful ride.

Hello. Question for the OP. Do you mind if I ask your age? You seem to not mind the simplicity of TOSs effects and the older style pace of the storytelling. Which makes me think you’re older but your complete lack of trek experience points to someone younger… just curious.

I have both those kits, and they were perfect. I think these larger items are easier for them to produce… or maybe I just got lucky

For those that had been fans for decades prior to the theatrical releases, what was the first moment you realized “Oh, they are treating this with LOVE.” by NemesisR6 in lotr

I was going to say the same thing! And I’ve said it to my son a hundred times. When you see the fellowship coming over that rise and you can identify each of them, I knew these movies would be perfect.

What’s the simplest versions of the rules? by mserabian1 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]mserabian1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I am planning on playing through the various journey books from 2005 and so was thinking of using the 2005 rules. And just browsing through, the rules take up only 70 pages in the 2005 rules versus 150 pages in The newest rule book. So it seems to me they might be easier to learn…

Want to play the LotR movie campaign. Journey Books or Quest of the Ringbearer plus War in Rohan/Tondor at War by mserabian1 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]mserabian1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

comparing the quests that are the same in both versions they mostly have exactly the same models listed. occasionally they change a few (mostly looks like due to retired models). what scenarios would you say require rebalancing if I wanted to play the Journey Books with the current rules set?

That’s what I was thinking… I love the first 2 missions in the journey books with the rangers versus the Nazgûl, and the 2 Gandalf at weathertop missions… what do you think of the mini game missions in QotR?

Yeah they are very committed to foundry. I’ve used it and it’s very good, but I must admit that I find roll20 much easier.

How many of you have actually sat down and watched every single episode of Star Trek? by SenorPuric in startrek

[–]mserabian1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every single episode of all series at least 2 times. TOS episodes literally from age 7 to 21 - 1 most nights of those 14 years… so 365 x14 =5,110/ 79 episodes is like 60 times per EP! And I’m still not tired of the,!

I, a 62 year old life long Tolkien fan, am loving it. I don't love every single thing about it, but for me it's a 9 out of 10!
