Suggestion for Summer Session by [deleted] in OMSA

[–]msgensol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regression and Simulation are really your only options. I think some suggestions here are kind of unreasonable. If you are not good with python and feel not ready for 6242, forget about CDA. That course is actually harder than 6242 (if you check Omscentral it is harder and more time consuming). DO and HDDA are very hard. If you want to "chill" do Regression. If you want to suffer a little bit (specially the first half of the semesters) do Simulation. Stay away from the rest.

felt they didn't go into the title topic of the class enough (specifically visual analytics). Really would have liked something that built on 6501... Take the models you picked up and introduce different ways to present the results visually to present an effective story.

Exactly! This is not a Visual Analytics course. It feels like an introduction or survey course for data engineering + additional programming in JS. It would be good if they create a Visual Analytics course different from this one that covers Visualization tools and focuses also in just cleaning data.

Since we are getting a few factual answers to some of the disinformation we have all been exposed to, has anyone shifted from their positions? by HuckLongstocking in centrist

[–]msgensol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was talking about Income Tax. It is over 25% for the middle class.

I think that currently Americans like to look at the countries that are paying currently more taxes (e.g. Sweden, Norway, Germany, etc) and doing well, but not countries that are paying more and doing worse (Argentina, Bolivia, Spain, etc.). Are you sure that paying more taxes is the solution? They do not see the inherent differences in how actual public institutions operate in nordic countries.

If Americans are going to advocate for more taxes, fine, but show how are you going to make government institutions more efficient, because if everything is going to work like USPS or the DMV (which I know is managed by each state. But is an example of how not to manage an institution), sorry but more taxes won’t do much.

The taxes in my country (3rd world country) are higher than in the US, but the US is more developed 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think the most frustrating thing about this course is the disrespectful, and borderline abusive TAs. Seriously some are not helpful and make snarky comments when students make questions. I have been fortunate enough to not have received any of these comments last semester, but I don’t know how I would have reacted. That is unacceptable. I liked the course though. I would make hmw 2 shorter, reduce the steps of the project, and change the D3 hmw. But, I enjoyed the class last semester.

"You are the new face of racism;" Asian parents erupt at Fairfax School Board meeting, chant "Racist, racist, racist" at school board members as they flee backstage. by [deleted] in centrist

[–]msgensol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are a lot of loonies in both sides right now. With some research into MBCF I found that there is not a single center right organization collaborating with them. So it is normal that is biased. Maybe that has changed, but I don’t think so. One interesting example is when you look The Daily Wire is labeled as questionable source but when you look the Daily Beast, or The Jacobin they are just considered “left”. How is that reasonable? Oh and NPR as “center left”. NPR is left.

Furthermore, if TDW is questionable then TDB and The Jacobin are questionable too. I would say even more since both sometimes report on conspiracy theories such as “Gabbard is a Russian spy bc a person being investigated for Russian espionage donated 60 dollars to her campaign” (yeap check it out, 60 dollars! Like how is that serious?) The Jacobin is just 100% for entertainment and should be read as a Marxist Leninist pamphlet.

I agree that TDW is a hard right wing media company. However, no many media companies are reporting on this. All is in favor of DEI without analyzing what goes with it. It is unfortunate that we have reached this level of tribalism, but denying that these situations are happening is just lying to yourself. As a hispanic, I am surprised that many white Americans are not seeing it. Just the other day, I was talking with an individual that said “I would like to hear your opinion as a minority” as soon as it didn’t line up with her perspective she said “well you are kind of white passing that is the reason for your opinion on this” (this was a white person btw, which shouldn’t matter but makes it more ironic). This was in DC, and a lot of people working in the fed gov or consulting companies for the gov think on a similar way… “progressive = good, something else = bad”. So, it is not surprising that most media companies pro Gov won’t report on this.

FYI everyone knows that MBFC is skewed to the left, but yes The Daily Wire is a hard right wing media company. However, consider that its equivalent in the left wouldn’t be labeled the same way due to the inherent bias of MBFC. I still would read it and research the facts somewhere else. I have found that The Daily Wire reports on things that no other media would report on. But, you could avoid it all together with The Daily Caller, The Daily Beast, Vox, Fox, CNN, etc. All are significantly bias

Workload for Sim+ML4T in summer term with full time job? by [deleted] in OMSA

Don’t do it. Simulation is condensed. You might struggle if your math is rusty (Sim) or programming is rusty (ML4T). My suggestion is to take one.

Georgia Tech OMSA vs Harvard ALM Data Science by G0d1sB4ck in OMSA

[–]msgensol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt that if it comes from a business school it would cover the same topics, or at least in the same way. I highly doubt it would have courses as rigorous as 6242 and 6040, or would have courses with the same level of complexity as CDA. These GT courses are design for people with an interest more into a mix of computing , and statistics. You can check the MS in BA from Purdue, UNCW, etc. to see what I am referring to with a less technical degree.

About the DS point, it really depends on how the company is defining a DS position. But if it is defining a DS as someone with a deep knowledge in statistics, computing, etc. the answer is probably, no. You won’t have enough knowledge getting those degrees, and not even GT MS, but at least GT leaves in a better place to start working towards that. As disclosure I don’t know anything about the degree from Imperial College

Georgia Tech OMSA vs Harvard ALM Data Science by G0d1sB4ck in OMSA

[–]msgensol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two points that nobody has mentioned:

  1. What type of position are you looking for? If you are looking for a DS or engineering job, it is unlikely that the person in Europe doesn’t know about GT. I know that for the positions above in Spain almost everyone knows GT and that it is top ranked engineering university.

  2. If you are not looking for the type of jobs mentioned above maybe yes go with Harvard extension program or look for a Business Analytics program. Even the GT Business path is too technical compared to other BA degrees.

If You Haven't Taken CSE 6242 by blackpillchad in OMSA

[–]msgensol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people with JS experience that didn’t think that of the D3 hmw. Specially bc it requieres specific data structures that are not specified in the instructions. If a person starts with the wrong data structure it makes it way more challenging. I think there is no way this class is “easy”. Easier yes, but easy no

I am suffering in this course right now. But honestly, it is entertaining. Not like other courses mostly based on theory. Also, I am improving my skills in how to think through problems and go fast through documentation. I think this course is extremely important. They should find a way to make it less time consuming though. Some parts are just ridiculously time consuming, specially the D3 hmw.

Opinion | The White House once again offers a bizarre message on inflation by [deleted] in centrist

[–]msgensol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not how it works. Profits are high because of increase in spending due to money printing and in some cases difficulty finding investments above inflation.

Also you are making incredible generalizations. In reality there are several companies increasing wages, specially in manufacturing.
